> My Baker Lineage
I have two Baker lines, apparently unrelated to
each other (though that is not proven).
I have traced my ancestry back to
Jacob Fouts (1786-1852).
He was born in Rowan Co., NC, lived much of his youth in Ashe Co., NC and
moved to Macon Co., NC in the 1830's. His wife was named Mary Margaret
Baker (1798-1858). She was also born in Rowan Co., NC, and married
Jacob Fouts ca 1800-1806, either in Ashe or Wilkes Co., NC.
I have never found one shred of evidence, primary
or circumstantial, that Mary Margaret's maiden name was "Baker" but this
is the surname given in a book written by Thelma Swanson (deceased). She
mentioned no proof for it, so I have no idea where it came from. It was
also mentioned in one of the Fouts newsletters of old, again no proof
included.
I can only guess that it was family knowledge that
was passed down. At least I hope that is the case.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that Mary
Margaret Baker is a daughter of Jacob
Baker (1760/65) who lived in Rowan, Wilkes and Ashe Co., NC and
died after 1830 either in Ashe or perhaps after 1840 in Cherokee Co., NC.
I have not been able to prove Jacob was Mary Margaret's father.
There were several Baker families in old Rowan
Co., NC, as well as several in Wilkes County. Ashe County was full of
Bakers, most apparently not related to Jacob Baker as far as can be
determined.
My second Baker line was in Lincoln Co., NC early
on. My ancestor Aaron Cox
(1757-1840/50) was born in New Jersey and came to Lincoln Co., NC
while young. He married Olly Baker there in 1787. Olly was born ca
1760/65. They lived in Lincoln awhile, then moved to nearby Buncombe Co.,
NC, then later to neighboring Haywood Co., NC. It appears Aaron and Olly
both died in Haywood in the 1840's.
I have not been able to determine who Olly's
parents were. There were several Baker families in old Lincoln Co., NC. I
haven't done much research to sort them out yet.
