Benjamin J. Barnes (c1827) and Jane of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Barnes > Families > Benjamin [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Benjamin J. Barnes family. I am very interested in him though. Benjamin J. Barnes was born ca 1826/27 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents were, but I strongly suspect he is a son of Joel Barnes, but have no solid proof of that. Joel had a son this age (born ca 1825/30) with him in the 1840 census. Benjamin Barnes married Jane --- ca 1847 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name might be. Benjamin Barnes and his wife and children were listed in Marion Dist, SC on the 1850 census. A Lewis Barnes age 14 (born ca 1835/36) was living with them. I suspect his is a brother of Benjamin. Of interest is the fact that Joel Barnes, suspected father of Benjamin, also had a son this age (ca 1835/40) with him in the 1840 census. That doesn't prove that Joel was the father of Benjamin and Lewis, but it does help a little.

Joel Barnes was listed next after Benjamin. This means they owed money to the estate. No relationship is implied to the deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 1005 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). Benjamin Barnes and family were still in Marion Dist, SC for the 1860 census. By this time his brother Lewis was no longer with him, but still living in Marion Dist, SC. For some reason, Jane, wife of Benjamin, was listed as "James" in this census.

This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on. I haven't yet checked for this family on the 1900 census.
ChildrenBenjamin and Jane's children are proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records.
Sarah L. Barnes was born ca 1847/48 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Pee Dee Township (modern Florence Co, SC). She was home with her parents in 1850, 1860 and 1870 census, but gone after 1870. She either married or died before 1880. Mary Barnes was born ca 1850 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Pee Dee Township (modern Florence Co, SC). She was listed as age 4 months in 1850, but not with the family in 1860, so she probably died young. James B. Barnes was born ca 1850/51 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Pee Dee Township (modern Florence Co, SC). He was home with his parents in 1860 census. James married Mary J --- between 1860 and 1870. They were listed on the 1870 census in Pee Dee Township:

This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on. Lewis H. Barnes was born ca 1853/54 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Pee Dee Township (modern Florence Co, SC). He was home with his parents in 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. In 1880 he was listed as "Louisa Barnes", and listed as female, but it was clearly the same person, just entered mistakenly. If he married, it was after 1880. William C. Barnes was born ca 1856/57 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Pee Dee Township (modern Florence Co, SC). He was home with his parents in 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. In 1880 he was listed twice, once with his mother, and again as "W.C. Barnes" as a farm laborer with another family.
