James Barnes (bef 1755) and Nancy --- of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Barnes > Families > James [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the James Barnes family. I am very interested in him though. James Barnes was probably born before 1755. I have no real solid idea on when he was born, but "before 1755" seems to cover it fairly accurately, I think. James Barnes married Nancy Ann --- prior to ca 1780, presumably in the part of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. I have not seen any direct proof that James was Nancy's husband, but he is the only one who fits. James Barnes was listed on the 1786 Tax list for Prince George Parish in Captain Odom's company. He was listed with 150 acres. He was listed on a 1788 Petition as a resident of Little Pee Dee. James Barnes was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where he lived exactly, nor who his neighbors were. The only other Barnes in Prince George at that time was Charles Barnes, whom I suspect was James' brother. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Georgetown Dist, SC Prince George Parish, SC pg 53 James Barns 1-2-1-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) James BARNES (bef 1755) 2 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Elias BARNES Thomas BARNES 1 Female(s) any age (before 1790) Nancy Ann ___ Barnes (bef 1755) James Barnes died sometime prior to 1796. On 1 Dec 1796 Charles Moody Sr sold Ann Barnes 125 acres on Pyhorn Branch for 10 pounds. Witnesses were Sherwood Johnston and Elias Barnes. Elias is a son of Nancy and James. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B page 30 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). Marion District was created in 1798 from Georgetown District. Nancy Ann Barnes was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. She was just a few houses from Charles Moody Sr, and Sherrod Johnson, both mentioned in the 1796 deed. She was also just a few houses from my ancestor John Campbell, this puts her in or near the Maiden Down Swamp area. 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Marion District, SC pg 448/792 Ann Barns 00200-00201 Analysis: 2 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Elias BARNES (1774/84) son Thomas BARNES (1774/80) son 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Ann ___ Barnes (bef 1755), wd/o James 2 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Christian BARNES (1774/84) daughter Daughter? (1774/84) On 19 Aug 1801 Ann Barnes sold the 125 acres purchased from Charles Moody Sr, to Arthur Herring, for $150. Witnesses were her son Thomas Barnes and also Roger Roberts. Arthur Herring and Roger Roberts were listed nearby on the 1800 census. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B page 28 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe) I didn't find Nancy Ann Barnes on the 1810 census. I suspect she may have been residing with a son or daughter. I didn't find anyone her age with either of her known sons Elias or Thomas Barnes. On 17 Mar 1815 Joshua Brown sold Ann Barnes 170 acres on Sister Bay and Reedy Creek Bay, and also another 8 acres. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 250 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). Nancy Ann --- Barnes died before 3 Jun 1816 in Marion Dist, SC, for on that date, Christiana Barnes (aka Chrissy Barnes) was granted letters of administration. (Marion Co, SC Administrations Book A page 172) Nancy Barnes had a Probate Roll as well. Christina Barnes was listed as Aministratrix of the estate. These records show her estate was distributed in three parts, to Elias Barnes, to John Coleman for Tom Barnes and to Crissy Barnes. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 83 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). I don't know why Thomas Barnes part was given to John Coleman, but he may have been out of the county and Coleman was acting on his behalf.
ChildrenJames and Nancy Ann Barnes had at least three children, proven by Estate records. Census records may indicate a few others, who, perhaps died before Nancy's estate was settled (1816-1817). Christina "Crissy" Barnes (c1774/84)
Elias Barnes was born ca 1774/84, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. Elias, or someone his age, was with James Barnes for the 1790 census, and with widow Ann Barnes in 1800. Elias Barnes witnessed a 1796 deed from Charles Moody Sr to Ann Barnes (Elias' mother).(Marion Co, SC Deed Book B page 30) On 14 Sep 1805, Elias Barnes witnessed a deed between Zachariah Oates and Joseph Perritt for land on the South side of Buck Swamp. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 200 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 11 Mar 1806, Elias Barnes and his brother Thomas Barnes were both mentioned in the estate papers of James Martin. Elias Barnes was a witness to the Will dated 11 Apr 1806. Thomas Barnes was as a debtor to the estate in an inventory dated 23 Apr 1806. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 495 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). On 6 Oct 1806, Thomas Barnes and Elias Barnes lost 130 acres of land due to debt, and this land was sold by the Sheriff (Samuel S. Savage) to Samuel Smith Sr. The land was described as being between Catfish Swamp and Smith Swamp, and was part of a 1789 grant to Henry Flowers. The deed did not describe how it came into Thomas and Elias' hands. However, their debt to John Chisolm cost them the land. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 381 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). Elias Barnes was listed twice on the 1810 census in Marion District, SC, with an apparent wife (or perhaps this was a sister) with him. There were no children listed either time. The only difference in the two listings were for the age of his wife. On the page 84 listing, he was next to John Campbell and just a few houses from John's mother Nancy Campbell, which is where the Barnes were in 1800 as well. On the page 88 listing, Elias was just a few houses from his sister Crissy Barnes. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion District, SC pg 84 Elias Barnes 00010-00100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Elias BARNES (1774/84) s/o James and Nancy 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Wife? (1784/94) 1810 Marion District, SC pg 88 Elias Barnes 00010-00010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Elias BARNES (1774/84) s/o James and Nancy 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Wife? (1765/84) Elias was not named on either the 1811 nor the 1814 tax list for Marion District, possibly because he owned no land at that time. Elias was named as one of the heirs in the 1817 division of Nancy Barnes estate. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 83 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). I didn't find Elias Barnes on the 1820 census in Marion, but he was still in Marion, so he must have been residing with someone else. On 9 Feb 1820, Elias Barnes witnessed a deed between Lewis Brown to his children Charlotte, Ann and Richard Brown. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 176 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 9 Jul 1822, Elias witnessed two deeds between Phillip Shelly and Solomon Owens. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K page 30 and 32 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). Elias Barnes was not listed on the 1824 tax list of Marion Dist, SC. On 5 Apr 1826, Elias Barnes was named as administrator for Christian (Crissy) Barnes, his sister. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 62, as published in Pee Dee Queue). I didn't find Elias Barnes on the 1830 census either, but he was still living, so probably living with someone else. On 21 Nov 1831, Elias Barnes was listed as a purchaser at the estate sale of William Cook. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 137 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). Elias Barnes made a Will on 5 June 1835. He named his "nephew Joel Barnes" executor, and the only legatees named were the "children of my nephew Joel Barnes, share and share alike". (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 465 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). The above Will was proven by Daniel Boatright, one of the witnesses, on 14 Jul 1835. If the woman with Elias on the 1810 census was his wife, then apparently she died before he died, and they had no children, or none to live.
Thomas Barnes was born ca 1774/80, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. Thomas, or someone his age, was with James Barnes for the 1790 census, and with widow Ann Barnes in 1800. On 19 Aug 1801 Thomas Barnes witnessed a deed from his mother Ann Barnes to Arthur Herring. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B page 28 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 14 Aug 1805 Thomas Barnes witnessed a deed between Jean Harrelson Oates, administrator of the estate of Lewis Harrelson, to Matthew Martain (sic?). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 128 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 16 Dec 1805 Thomas Barnes witnessed a deed whereby James Martin emancipated a negro named Rose. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 190 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 11 Mar 1806, Thomas Barnes and his brother Elias Barnes were both mentioned in the estate papers of James Martin. "Thomas Barns" was listed on the 1809 voter list in Marion Dist, SC. Thomas Barnes was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC, unlike his siblings Elias and Crissy, he was only listed once (they were both listed twice). He was listed alone. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion District, SC pg 85 Thomas Barnes 00010-00000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Thomas BARNES (1774/80) s/o James and Nancy Thomas was not listed on the 1811 tax list, but he was on the 1814 tax list and charged with 17 cents tax. In 1812, Thomas Barnes was named in the accounts of the estate of Robert Moody. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 530 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). In the 1816-1817 estate records for his mother Nancy Ann Barnes, Thomas was named as an heir. His 1/3 of the estate was given to "John Coleman for Tom Barnes". I'm not sure if John Coleman was acting on Thomas' behalf, or why it was worded like that. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 83 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). On 15 Dec 1817, Thomas Barnes was listed as purchaser at the estate sale of Niel Hughes. Also listed (among many others) were James Barnes, James Barnes Sr, and David Barnes (all spelled "Barns"). (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 372 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). I didn't find Thomas Barnes on the 1820 census. Since he was single, he may have been residing with someone else. On 18 Nov 1820, Thomas Barnes (and sister Crissy) were both listed as purchasers at the estate sale of William White. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 257 as published in the Pee Dee Queue). On 3 Dec 1821, Thomas Barnes is listed as a purchaser at the estate sale of John Henry. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 379 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). Thomas Barnes was listed on the 1830 census, still single, apparently. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we cant' tell where he was living, nor who his neighbors were. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion District, SC pg 6 Thomas Barnes 0000000100000-0000000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1770-1780) Thomas BARNES (1774/80) s/o James & Nancy I didn't find any record of Thomas after 1830. He either died then, or moved away. Apparently, he never married.
Christian "Crissy" Barnes was born ca 1774/84, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. Crissy, or someone her age, was with widow Ann Barnes in 1800. On 17 Dec 1804 John Flowers made a deed to "Prissy" Barnes for 135 acres of land where "said Prissy Barns lives on". Although this says "Prissy", I'm sure it is Crissy instead. Witnesses were Samuel Gasque and Henry Flowers. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 428 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). Crissy Barnes, like her brother Elias, was listed twice on the 1810 census in Marion District. The first listing (page 86B) shows her two houses from my ancestor Osborne Lane, known to live on Buck Swamp. This is the right neighborhood for her. The next listing, on page 88, shows her just a couple of houses from her brother Elias Barnes. The listings were only different in three respects: first her name was "Christian" on one and "Creasy" on the other; second, her name was "Barnes" on one, "Barns" on the other; and third, one listing had a male her same age residing with her, the other did not. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion District, SC pg 86 Christian Barnes 10010-00010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Brother? 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Joel BARNES (1802/03) son 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Christian BARNES (1774/84) d/o James & Nancy 1810 Marion District, SC pg 88 Creasy Barns 10000-00010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Joel BARNES (1801/02) son 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Christian BARNES (1774/84) d/o James & Nancy She was listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion as "Christian Barnes" and charged with 40 cents tax. On 3 Jun 1816, Crissy was named as administratrix of her mother's estate. (Marion Co, SC Administrations Book A page 172) The estate records for Nancy Barnes show her estate was distributed in three parts, to Elias Barnes, to John Coleman for Tom Barnes and to Crissy Barnes. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 83 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). On 28 Oct 1818, Crissy ("Christon Barnes") witnessed two deeds between Gadi Crawford to James G. Crawford. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 358 and 359 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 8 Jan 1819, Crissy ("Chrissey Barnes, single woman") deeded 135 acres to Aaron Martin, this being the land deeded to her by John Flowers. Witnesses were Thomas Evans and Jesse Bryan(t) Jr. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H page 95 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). I didn't find Crissy listed on the 1820 census. On 18 Nov 1820, Thomas Barnes and sister Crissy were both listed as purchasers at the estate sale of William White. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 257 as published in the Pee Dee Queue). On 20 Nov 1821 Crissy Barnes was listed among the notes owed to John Henry estate. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 14 as published in the Pee Dee Queue). Crissy Barnes died sometime between 1821 and 1826, for on 4 Apr 1826 Elias Barnes was named administrator of her estate. The Probate records did not name any heirs. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 84 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). I believe that Crissy Barnes was the mother of Joel Barnes, born ca 1803. I have no direct proof that she is his mother, but he was listed as a nephew of Elias Barnes in his Will of 1835, and Elias only had two siblings: Thomas and Crissy. Thomas never married, and neither did Crissy, but Crissy did have someone Joel's age with her for the 1810 census. It is entirely possible that Joel was a nephew of hers as well, a child of deceased brother or sister that she raised.
