I am very interested in him though. Joel Barnes was born ca 1802/03 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents were, but I suspect he is a son of Crissy Barnes, daughter of James Barnes and Nancy Ann. He is a proven nephew of Elias Barnes, brother of Crissy, who mentioned him as such in his Will. I don't know who Joel Barnes' first wife was, but she was dead before 1850. In 1850 he had a Rebecca Barnes, age 21 with him, who was either his oldest daughter, or his 2nd wife. I don't know which. Joel Barnes was listed on the 1814 Marion Dist, SC Tax list, which is unusual considering his age at the time (about 11 or 12), or else there was another Joel Barnes in the county then. The birth date I have for him may be wrong, as it is based only on one census (1850). Joel was not found on the 1820 census. Joel Barnes was named in the Estate of James Crawford in the accounts (meaning he owed money to the deceased) dated 26 Mar 1827 and again in the same file on 2 May 1829. In Sep 1829 (no date) Joel Barnes was listed among the purchasers at an estate sale of Ervin H. Flowers. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 267 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). Joel was not found on the 1830 census, though it seems that he had two children born before 1830 (though I could be mistaken about them). On 5 Jun 1835 Elias Barnes named his "Nephew Joel Barnes" to be his Executor, and he named Joel's children as his sole legatee, though he didn't mention any of the children by name. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 465 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). Joel Barnes was listed on the 1840 census. Joel Barnes and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County.

(Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 985 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). Joel Barnes and Benjamin Barnes were both listed in the accounts for the Estate of James Deracken dated 20 Feb 1858. Joel was listed next after Benjamin. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 1005 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985). I didn't find Joel or any of his children in 1860 or later census records. ChildrenI think it is possible that Joel Barnes was the father of Benjamin Barnes (c1826/27) and Lewis Barnes (c1835/36) but can't prove it yet.
