Abigail (---) Blackman (bef 1765) of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Blackman > Families > Abigail [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Abigail Blackman. Abigail is probably a widow of a Mr. Blackman who died before 1810. I'm not sure who her husband was, but I have a suspicion (but no direct proof) that she was the wife of Solomon Blackman Sr. This requires some explanation, which I will give below. The only record I have for Abigail is her entry on the 1810 census in Marion District, SC. She is listed twice in fact: first as "Abigail", and secondly as "Abby". The enumerations for both are identical, so I'm sure one is an accidental duplicate, though it is certainly possible that there were two apparent widows named Abigail Blackman in 1810, though that seems highly doubtful. I do not know Abigail's maiden name, nor if she was a Blackman by birth or if by marriage. Abigail was born before 1765 (bef the 1810 census), so this puts her in the same general age group as the patriarchal Blackmans who were in the Marion area in 1790, and 1800. It seems logical that Abigail was the wife of one of those men. There is certainly the possibility that she was an unmarried sister instead. Her 1810 census entry showed a male born ca 1784/94 living with her. This could be a son or a nephew or someone else. Assuming it is a son, then she was married prior to ca 1794. The 1790 census shows five Blackman households in the region that later became Marion County. They were Benjamin Blackman (bef 1755), David Blackman (1744), James Blackman (bef 1755), Solomon Blackman (bef 1755) and Solomon Blackman Jr (1755/65). Of these, all had apparent wives, and all but Solomon Sr had sons under 16 (born ca 1774/90). From this list we can eliminate Benjamin from consideration, for when he died (before 1804), he was survived by his widow Ann. We can also remove David Blackman (1744) from the list, for he was still alive in 1810, and did not die until the 1840's (of course it is possible that he and his wife split up, but that is wild speculation). James Blackman was still alive into the 1820's, so he is not likely Abigail's husband. Solomon Jr also was still alive well past 1810. That leaves only Solomon Sr as a possible husband for Abigail, based only on the 1790 census. The 1800 census for Marion District includes John Blackman (1777), Benjamin Blackman (bef 1755), William Blackman (1774/84), James Blackman (bef 1755) and Solomon Blackman (don't know whether Sr or Jr, or both together). As I mentioned before, Benjamin and James can be removed from consideration for various reasons. John Blackman's wife was Elizabeth Lane as proven by various sources. William Blackman is mostly unknown, but he did have a large household in 1800, including 2 boys under 10 (born ca 1790/1800), and one girl the same age, and two older females, one born ca 1755/74, and one born ca 1774/84. That oldest female could certainly be Abigail. Solomon Blackman's 1800 household is problematic. I'm not sure if this listing is for Solomon Sr or Jr. The household contains several adults, and it is possible that both Solomon Sr and Jr were there together (though no evidence is found showing they were father and son). It is also possible that this listing is for Solomon Jr and his father (not proven) David Blackman (1744) who is not listed in 1800, though still living then. That makes William's 1800 household seem like a possible match, though I'd guess that he was Abigail's son, and not husband. The 1800 census entry for Solomon Blackman (Jr?) also matches, so it is between these two. So the bottom line is that I don't know who Abigail's husband might have been, though I strongly believe that Solomon Blackman Sr is the most likely choice. Mr. Blackman died sometime between 1800 and 1810. Abigail was listed twice on the 1810 census in Marion District. In her first entry shows her as "Abby" and puts her neighbors as Nancy Flowers and John Drew. Her other entry shows her as "Abigail" and puts her between the households of William Gasque and Elias Martin. Both of her entries show the same enumerations, one male age 16-25, and one female over 45. Neither entry shows her near other Blackman families. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 31/88 Abby Blackman 00100-00001 1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 38/86 Abigail Blackman 00100-00001 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Son?
