Benjamin Blackman (bef 1755) and Anne --- of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Blackman > Families > Benjamin [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Benjamin Blackman, but I'm very interested in him. Benjamin Blackman was born before 1755, whereabouts unknown, possibly in SC, or perhaps NC. It seems likely that he is a brother to (or somehow related to) James Blackman, Solomon Blackman Sr and David Blackman. I have no proof that they were brothers, but it seems logical. Benjamin Blackman married Anne --- sometime prior to 1790, probably as far back as the 1770's. I currently have no point of reference to narrow it down any better than that. Benjamin Blackman was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, SC in Prince George Parish. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Georgetown District, SC, Prince George Parish pg 53 Benjamin Blackmon 1-5-1-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Benjamin BLACKMAN (bef 1755) s/o ? 5 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? This was reported to have been part of a grant to Benjamin on 6 Feb of "last" (meaning either 6 Feb 1792 or 1793). John Blackmon was one of the witnesses. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 260 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 20 Jun 1796 Benjamin Blackmon sold Levi Gibson 50 acres known as "Grove Tract". (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 349 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). On 9 Dec 1796 Benjamin Blackmon sold 100 acres to Levi Gibson on Mount Pleasant Marsh. Gidi Blackmon was one of the witnesses. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 347 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798, effective 1800. Benjamin Blackman was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next door to John Blackman, possible evidence that Benjamin might be his father. One possible flaw in that, is that in 1790 Benjamin had 5 sons under 16 (born ca 1774/90), and in 1800 he still had five sons in that age group (2 age 16-25 ca 1774/84, and 3 age 10-15 ca 1784/90) that doesn't leave room for John to have left home, unless some of the ages are off slightly. This seems likely, since in 1800 Benjamin had 4 apparent daughters, all born before 1790, and none of these were listed in 1790. This shows that either the 1790 census or the 1800 census is in error. Another possibility is that some of these with Benjamin in 1800 weren't children of his, but someone else residing with him. 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Marion District, SC pg 446/790 Benjamin Blackman 03201-03110 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Benjamin BLACKMAN (bef 1755) s/o ? 2 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Son? (1784/90) * Not in 1790 Benjamin Blackman died sometime between 1800 and 1804, for on 22 May 1804, "Anny Blackmon, widow and relick of Benjamin Blackmon late of Marion District" sold 200 acres to Levi Gibson for $10. This was a quit claim of her dower for land on Hickory Marsh, which he had already purchased. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 348 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe). The above record was the last I found for Anne, widow of Benjamin Blackman. She may have died shortly after 22 May 1804, or else just didn't leave us any additional records. ChildrenNo children of Benjamin and Anne Blackman have been proven, as far as I know, but the census records show they probably had several. John Blackman and Gideon Blackman are possible sons of Benjamin. Charles Phillips and Durwood Blackmon (deceased) list James, Samuel and Gideon as children of Benjamin. These three all went to Warren Co, MS. Unknown Son (1774/1784) John Blackman Unknown Son (1774/1784) Gideon Blackman Unknown Son (1784/1790) James Blackman Unknown Son (1784/1790) Samuel Blackman Unknown Son born ca 1774/1784, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. A child this age was with Benjamin Blackman on the 1790 and 1800 census. No likely candidates appeared on the 1810 Marion census. One possible candidate for this child is John Blackman (c1775/76). He witnessed one of Benjamin's deeds in 1793, and he was listed next to Benjamin on the 1800 census. The fact that John was head of household in 1800 is a flaw in this theory though, since it seems that all five of Benjamin's sons from 1790 were still with him in 1800, but there seemed to be problems with those two census records anyway, so that still may leave room for John. If not, then this child is unaccounted for. Unknown Son born ca 1774/1784, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. A child this age was with Benjamin Blackman on the 1790 and 1800 census. No likely candidates appeared on the 1810 Marion census. This son could easily be Gideon Blackman who witnessed a 1796 deed of Benjamin Blackman. Charles Phillips shared some data on Gideon. Gideon, who, like his suspected brothers James and Samuel, went from SC to Warren Co, MS. In the 1830's Gideon moved to New Orleans, and sometime later (before 1847) moved to TN. Unknown Daughter born ca 1774/1784, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. For the 1790 census, Benjamin Blackman only had one female listed, so assuming that was his wife, that leaves no room for this daughter. However the 1790 census could have been in error (very likely). A child this age was with Benjamin Blackman on the 1800 census. No likely candidates appeared on the 1810 Marion census. Unknown Son born ca 1784/1790, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. A child this age was with Benjamin Blackman on the 1790 and 1800 census. No likely candidates appeared on the 1810 Marion census. Charles Phillips has a candidate for this son: James Blackman (c1782-1816) who died in Warren Co, MS. He, along with Samuel (below), moved from SC to Natchez District, MS ca 1806 and was in Warren Co, MS shortly afterwards, where he died. Unknown Son born ca 1784/1790, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. A child this age was with Benjamin Blackman on the 1790 and 1800 census. No likely candidates appeared on the 1810 Marion census. One possible candidate for this child is Samuel Blackman who died in the 1840's in Leake Co, MS. Charles Phillips believes Samuel could be a son of Benjamin. It seems quite reasonable to place Samuel here. Samuel moved from SC (presumably Marion County) to Natchez District, MS before 1810. By 1816 he was in Warren Co, MS. By 1820 he had moved south to Franklin Co, MS. By 1840 he was north again in Leake Co, MS. Samuel named a son "Gideon" and another one "Benjamin" and another one "James" and one "Solomon". All these are Marion Co, SC Blackman names, and other suspected Marion Blackman's wound up in some of these same counties at the same time, so it seems reasonable that this Samuel Blackman is indeed a son of Benjamin Blackman. More proof would be helpful though. Unknown Son born ca 1784/1790, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. A child this age was with Benjamin Blackman on the 1790 and 1800 census. No likely candidates appeared on the 1810 Marion census. Unknown Daughter born ca 1784/1790, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District. For the 1790 census, Benjamin Blackman only had one female listed, so assuming that was his wife, that leaves no room for this daughter.
