[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to David Blackman, but I'm very interested in him.

David Blackman was born ca 1784/94 (per 1810 census), presumably in the area that later became Marion County.

I don't know who David's parents are, but one strong suspect is David Blackman (1744). I base this only on the fact that they were side by side on the 1810 census, meaning they were neighbors. This does not prove their relationship as father and son, but it does suggest some close relationship.

David Blackman was too young to be listed on the 1790 census himself, so he was probably still home with his parents. He would have been listed in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). 4 out the 5 Blackman's in 1790 Georgetown had at least one son in that age group, so this doesn't help much to narrow down his possible parents: Benjamin Blackman (bef 1755), David Blackman (1744), James Blackman (bef 1755), and Solomon Blackman Jr (1755/65).

Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798, effective 1800.

David was not listed on the 1800 census, so probably still home with his parents. David would have been enumerated in either the 10-15 age group (born ca 1784/90) or the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). Solomon Blackman (Jr) (1755/65) had 4 sons 10-15, and 1 under 10; James Blackman (bef 1755) had the exact same number of sons in the same age groups; William Blackman (1774/84) had two sons under 10; Benjamin Blackman (bef 1755) had 3 sons 10-15, and John Blackman (1777) had one boy age 10-15. David Blackman (1744) was missing in 1800. Obviously, the 1800 census does not help narrow down who David's parents may have been, for every Blackman household in Marion had at least one boy his age living there. I would remove Solomon, James, and William from consideration. Solomon because his family seemed to be still intact in 1810, and James and William had both moved away by 1810 (James just to neighboring Darlington District). I'd also remove John from the listing, for his family is well documented, and I don't believe he had a son named "David". That leaves Benjamin and David Sr.

David Blackman (Jr) was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District, SC, next door to his likely father David Blackman Sr (1744).  His neighbor on the other side was Benjamin Harrelson. David's household contained an older woman (born before 1765), who could be his widowed mother, or perhaps a widowed mother-in-law. I don't know who David was married to.

1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 85 David Blackman Jr 00100-10101
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794)	David BLACKMAN (1784/94) s/o ?
1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1765)	Mother? Mother-in-law?
1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794)	Wife?
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810)	Daughter?

On 30 Aug 1810, David Blackman Jr of Marion District, sold 206 acres to Dugal Carmichael, Minor (being the younger man of that name), land on Buck Swamp and Little Pee Dee River. Witnesses were D. Flowers, John Carmichael and John McQuaige. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 91, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books F through K are also from this book).

The above deed seems to be the time David Blackman left Marion County. He was not found in 1820 in Marion, nor did I find him in neighboring counties that year. I did find a David Blackman in Marion Co, Mississippi in 1820. This could be the same David, but without further research, I have no way to be sure. The age of that David in 1820 was compatible (putting his birth at ca 1775/94), but I can't draw any conclusions yet. One strong clue in favor of this being the same David is that his neighbor was Stephen Foxworth. Their had been a Stephen Foxworth in Marion Dist, SC in 1810. If that is the same Stephen, then perhaps it is the same David. I don't know of a relationship between these families, but often entire communities migrated together.

The 1830 census index showed no Blackmans in Marion Co, MS, but also showed no Blackmans in all of Mississippi, so I wonder if that is an error of some sort. There was a David Blackman (c1797) in Monroe Co, Alabama in 1830 listed next door to Solomon Blackman (1750/60) who could be the same person as Solomon Blackman (1755/65) of Marion Co, SC. This could be the same David Blackman we are studying here, or it could be another one, quite probably related.

I think this same David Blackman (c1797) of 1830 Monroe Co, AL was in Conecuh Co, AL in 1840 (borders Monroe), next to a Nancy Blackman (c1807) (perhaps 2nd wife, and widow of Solomon?).

In 1850, David Blackman (c1797) was still in Conecuh Co, AL, and just two houses from widow Nancy (c1807), perhaps his step-mother or aunt or sister-in-law.

This David Blackman (1797) was born in South Carolina. I have no way of knowing (without further study) if he is the same David Blackman from the 1810 Marion Dist, SC census. The age of "53" (from the 1850 census) is not an exact match with David's 1810 census entry showing a birth of ca 1784/94, but it is close enough to consider. However, keep in mind that the 1850 age could be wrong.

Children

David Blackman and wife had at least one child per the 1810 census. I have no additional data on them so far. If this is the same David later found in Alabama, then he had quite a few more children.
