David Blackman (1744) of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Blackman > Families > David [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to David Blackman, but I'm very interested in him. David Blackman was born June 1744 per his Revolutionary War Pension record. He also stated that he was born in Granville County, Virginia. However, I should point out there is no such county in Virginia, nor ever was. He may have meant to say Granville County North Carolina, however, it did not yet exist in 1744, but was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe. This is a fact that he may have known about if he lived there any length of time. It is also possible that he meant Granville County, South Carolina, though I have no idea if that is correct either. Granville County, South Carolina was a huge county that was along the Savannah River bordering Georgia. It was abolished in 1769 when new Judicial Districts were formed from the old counties. Beaufort, Orangeburg, and 96 District all were formed from parts of old Granville. This area is quite a distance from Marion County where David later lived, but it should certainly be considered a possibility. If David was born in Granville Co, SC, then he soon moved the entire breadth of the state north easterly to what later became Marion County. Although this is possible, it was not a typical migration route. If he was born in Granville Co, NC (which at the time of its founding was much larger than it is today), then he left there and moved south to what later became Marion. This is more likely, though I'm not aware of much Granville to Marion migration. One last possibility exists, though slim. There is a Greensville County, Virginia. It was not formed until 1780 (from parts of Brunswick and Sussex Counties). I don't think this is where David was born, but it is worth mentioning. I have no record of David's parentage, though it seems likely that he is a brother to (or somehow related to) James Blackman, Solomon Blackman Sr and Benjamin Blackman, all of whom were roughly the same age and lived near one another in Marion County.. I have no proof that they were brothers, but it seems logical to assume they were somehow connected. It has been suggested that David et al, were sons of an older John Blackman who came in the Marion County area and was still living as late as 1781. This could be true, but more research is needed. David was already a resident of what is now Marion County when he served in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). He applied for a Pension (File # R898). I don't have this file, nor the details of his service, but a published synopsis shows he stated he was born Jun 1744 in Granville Co, VA, and lived in Marion Co, SC. The original file may contain much more data. David Blackman married someone prior to 1790, probably as far back as the 1770's. I currently have no point of reference to narrow it down any better than that. I have not yet found a record showing his wife's name. David Blackman was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, SC in Prince George Parish. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Georgetown District, SC, Prince George Parish pg 53 David Blackmon 1-2-4-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) David BLACKMAN (1744) s/o ? 2 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? (bef 1790) --> gone by 1810 Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798, effective 1800. For some reason David Blackman was not listed on the 1800 census in Marion, nor was he listed elsewhere as far as I could find. I think he was still in Marion this year, but either missed by the census taker or else living in someone else's household and not listed by name (only heads of household were listed by name). On 3 Sep 1808, David Blackman and Robert Rogers Jr witnessed a deed from Archibald Shaw of Robeson Co, NC to William Huggins Jr of Marion. David signed with a mark. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 320, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books F through K are also from this book). On 30 Sep 1808, Archibald Shaw of Robeson Co, NC sold land to David Blackman of SC, being 156 acres between Buck Swamp and Little Pee Dee River. Witnesses were Lewis Huggins, and Frederick Herring. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 319). David Blackman was listed on the 1809 voter list in Marion District. For the 1810 census, there were two David's listed, one "Sr", one "Jr". Obviously this one was "Sr". They were listed side by side, leading me to assume they were father and son. (The use of "Sr" and "Jr" does not mean father and say the way it generally does today, for back then it was used merely as a means of easily distinguishing two adults of the same name, no matter how or if they were related). 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 29/85 David Blackman Sr 00101-11002 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 and up (bef 1765) David BLACKMAN (1744) s/o 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Son? David Blackman was listed on the 1814 tax list in Marion District, and taxed 34 cents. On 7 Jan 1818 David Blackman sold 50 acres to Lewis Mairs (Mears). David signed with a mark. Witnesses were B. Moody and Lewis Huggins. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H, page 123). In 1820 only one David Blackman was listed, and it appears to be David Sr, meaning "Jr" had moved away (or died). Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Marion Dist, SC pg 55 David Blackman 200001-11121 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1775) David BLACKMAN (1744) 2 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Son? (1810/20) --> gone by 1830 On 16 Feb 1820, David Blackman, Planter, of Marion gave a deed of gift to his daughter Mahalah Blackman. At his death, she was to get 100 acres on Little Pee Dee River bounded by Lewis Mares (Mears), James Blackman, Hugh Harrell and Lazarus Lee Jr. Also to receive all his livestock and all other property. He signed with a mark. Witnesses were Taply Moody and Levy Huggins and Enos Tart. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I, page 213). David Blackman was listed on the 1824 tax list in Marion District, and taxed 3 cents. Mrs. Blackman apparently died in the 1820-30, for David was listed alone on the 1830 census. His age was off a considerable amount, so it is possible that the census information was obtained from a neighbor or someone else not very familiar with his family. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist, SC pg 2 David Blackman 0000000010000-0000000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 60-69 (1760-1770) David BLACKMAN (1744) David was listed on the 1840 census, and still apparently alone. This time his age was listed as over 100, or born before 1740. This is close, if he was born in 1744. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist, SC pg 147 David Blackman 0000000000001-0000000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 100 & up (before 1740) David BLACKMAN (1744) David Blackman died sometime between 1840 and 1850 at a ripe old age of at least 96 or more (assuming his "1744" birth year is correct). ChildrenDavid Blackman had numerous children per the various census records. Daughter Mahala Blackman is proven by an 1820 deed where David gave her all of his property. I found no Equity or Probate records for David Blackman. Unknown Son (1774/90). David Blackman had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90). I don't have the 1800 census entry, but he was gone by 1810, so probably married or dead by then. There was a David Blackman Jr listed next to David in 1810, and it seems likely that this was him, for he was born ca 1784/94, and that fits within this age group. Unknown Son (1774/90). David Blackman had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90). I don't have the 1800 census entry, but he was gone by 1810, so probably married or dead by then. I don't know who this might have been. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). David Blackman had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1790 (no ages given, so born before 1790). I don't have the 1800 census entry, but she was gone by 1810, so probably married or dead by then. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). David Blackman had an apparent daughter this age. David Blackman had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1790 (no ages given, so born before 1790). I don't have the 1800 census entry, but she was gone by 1810, so probably married or dead by then. Unknown Son (1784/94). David Blackman had an apparent son this age. I don't have the 1800 census entry, but he was home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94). He was gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then. There was a James Blackman (1775/94) listed on the 1820 census, and this James was also a neighboring land owner of David's, so it seems quite likely that he was this son of David Blackman, though that is not proven. Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). David Blackman had an apparent daughter this age. I don't have the 1800 census entry, but she was home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). She was still home in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804), but was gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then. This could be his daughter Mahala Blackman who he deeded all his property to in 1820. Unknown Daughter (1804/10). David Blackman had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), but was gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then. Unknown Son (1810/20). David Blackman had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but was gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then. I don't know who this could have been.
