Elizabeth Blackman (c1815) of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Blackman > Families > Elizabeth [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Elizabeth Blackman, but I am very interested in her though. At this point, I'm not entirely sure if Elizabeth was a widow of an unknown Mr. Blackman, or if she was a single mother, and Blackman was her surname. Single mother seems more likely based on available evidence. Elizabeth Blackman was born ca 1814/15 in Marion Dist, SC. If she were a widow, instead of a single mother, I have no leads on who her husband might have been, nor do I know who her parents were. Elizabeth Blackman was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. No other Blackman's were listed nearby. Analysis of her neighbors show that she was probably residing in Bethea Township. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 184 Betsy Blackman 0000000000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Elizabeth BLACKMAN (1814/15) d/o ? 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Laura BLACKMAN (1836/37) daughter Elizabeth Blackman and children were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. James Blackman was just two houses away. Might be her brother. Based on her neighbors, it seems she was in the area that later became Bethea Township.

However, in 1870 her son Cameron Blackman was found in Bethea Township, listed with the James R. Powers family. Of some note is that an Elizabeth Blackman, 10 years younger than this one, was just a few houses away in another James R. Powers family (I think the two James R. Powers are one and the same, and these were duplicate entries). This seems to show Elizabeth still living then, however, for the sake of caution, I'm not going to assume it is the same Elizabeth. Refer to the page for this other Elizabeth Blackman for more on her.
ChildrenChildren of Elizabeth Blackman are based on her 1850 census record.
Laura Blackman was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC. She was apparently home with her mother in 1840, and with her in 1850. I didn't find her on the 1860 census, so she may have married, or died by then.
Alafair Blackman was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC. She didn't seem to be with her mother for the 1840 census, so probably born in late 1840. She was with her mother for the 1850 census. I didn't find her on the 1860 census, so she may have married, or died by then.
Sarah Blackman was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC. She was with her mother for the 1850 census. I didn't find her on the 1860 census, so she may have married, or died by then.
Cameron Blackman was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC. He was with his mother for the 1850 census. I didn't find him on the 1860 census, but he was still around apparently. For the Civil War, Cameron Blackman (listed as "Campbell Blackman") was called into service near the end of the war (he was young) into the Company of Militia "last called into service". (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 645) For the 1870 census, Cameron Blackman was in Marion Co, SC, in Bethea Township. He was listed as head of household, with the James R. Powers family residing with him (this census was numbered in a strange way, so perhaps they were in different households). About two pages away was an Elizabeth Blackman, who might be the same Elizabeth as his mother, though the age was different.

She was listed as a widow, and so was Cameron. His relationship to her was listed as "servant".
