I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to James Blackman, but I am very interested in him.

James Blackman was born ca 1819/20 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents were.

James married Esther --- before ca 1835 in Marion Dist, SC. I have no clues on her maiden name yet.

James was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed fairly near Margaret Blackman, old enough to be his mother. I don't know how they are related though. This seems to be the Catfish Creek area, probably Kirby township.

James and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC, just two houses from Elizabeth Blackman, perhaps James' sister. They were residing in a household headed by Cameron Johnson age 35, and also containing Meredith Scott age 23. Relationship between these two and James Blackman is unknown. This seems to be Bethea Township.

James Blackman apparently died sometime between ca 1855 and 1860.

James' widow Esther was listed on the 1860 census in Marion. No other Blackman families were nearby. Her neighbors were mostly those known to live in Manning Township.

I didn't find any member of this family on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC. A David Blackman about the same age as their son showed up in 1880, but I don't know if it is the same one or not.
