I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to James Blackman, but I'm very interested in him.

James Blackman was born before 1755, whereabouts unknown, possibly in SC, or perhaps NC. It seems likely that he is a brother to (or somehow related to) Benjamin Blackman, Solomon Blackman Sr and David Blackman. I have no proof that they were brothers, but it seems logical.

James Blackman married someone prior to 1790, probably as far back as the 1770's. I currently have no point of reference to narrow it down any better than that.

James Blackman was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, SC in Prince George Parish. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were.

Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798, effective 1800.

James Blackman was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was next door to William Blackman (1774/84), relationship unknown, though possibly a son or nephew.

On 22 Oct 1805, James Blackman of Marion District sold 10 acres to Baker Wiggins. The land was listed as being on Pee Dee River. Witnessed by James Knowland and Benjamin Skinner. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C, page 160, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book).

Sometime before 1810, James Blackman moved his family into neighboring Darlington District, for he is listed there on the 1810 census. He was the only Blackman listed there that year.

James was still in Darlington for the 1820 census. He was listed next door to Henry Blackman, a probable son.

I did not find James Blackman on the 1830 census, so perhaps he died by then.

Children

James Blackman and wife had several children per the census records. I strongly suspect that Henry Blackman (1775/94) is one of them since he was living next to James in 1820. William Blackman (1774/84) was next to James in 1800, he could be another son, but I have no direct proof for any of them. Darlington County records may reveal who James' children were.
