[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of John Blackman and Elizabeth Lane. Elizabeth by blood, John by marriage. I suspect that John Blackman is also a blood relative, but I don't know the connection between him and my ancestor Lucinda Blackman Lane.

John Blackman was born in January 1777. This is based on an affidavit he made on 17 Sep 1860 where he stated he would be 84 years old "next January". That means that in January 1861 he would turn 84, so that calculates to Jan 1777 for a birth month and year. (From "Marion County Court Records, Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861" Extracted by Lucille Utley and Transcribed by Teri Dalrymple. Three Rivers Historical Society)

He was presumably born in Georgetown District in the area that later became Marion District (in 1798).

John Blackman was mentioned by W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 389. He referred to John as a son of "the old Tory John" Blackman. However, I've found no supporting information about an older John Blackman being the father of this John.

Here is what Sellers wrote about John Blackman (page 388 and 389) in the Lane family writeup:

... (pg 389) Of the daughters, one, Elizabeth [Lane], married old John Blackman, a son of the old Tory John, that Colonel Murphy tied and whipped; by this marriage were three children born and raised, as known to the writer---Stephen Blackman and John, called Jack; the name of the daughter was Elizabeth, or Betsey; ...

If Sellers is correct, then John Blackman (1777) is a son of an older John Blackman, a Tory during the American Revolution. I'm not sure this is correct, but I don't have evidence showing anyone else to be his father either. However, I have a strong suspect in Benjamin Blackman being John's father, but with no solid proof, just circumstantial evidence. Another strong possibility is Solomon Blackman Sr.

John Blackman was not listed on the 1790 census, at least not that I could find. Marion County did not exist then, but was still part of Georgetown District, divided into Prince George Parish and Prince Frederick Parish. There were no Blackman's listed in Prince Frederick, but five families listed in Prince George in 1790. Of these, all but one had at least one male child in the right age group (under 16, born ca 1774/1790) to be John. They were Benjamin Blackman, David Blackman, James Blackman, and Solomon Blackman Jr. Only Solomon Blackman (Sr) had no males that age with him.

The above list doesn't really help narrow down who John's parents might have been, except in possibly eliminating Solomon Sr as a suspect. Though at this time John would have been about 14 years old, and might have been hired out and working as a laborer with another family, and living with them, so we can really determine alot from the 1790 census.

On 20 Sep 1793 John Blackman witnessed a deed in Marion District, SC where Benjamin and Anne Blackman sold land on Catfish Swamp to John Turner Jr. This shows a probable family connection. Benjamin is old enough to be John's father. Benjamin's 1790 census entry shows 5 sons under 16, and only three of these have been identified (so far), so John could fit right in there. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 260 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

On 28 Sep 1799 John Blackman witnessed a deed where John and Elizabeth Sanders sold land to Levi Gibson. John Sanders was mentioned as a neighboring landowner to Benjamin Blackman in the 1793 deed mentioned above. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 350 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

Again on 28 Sep 1799, John Blackman witnessed another deed between John and Elizabeth Sanders to Levi Gibson. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 352 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

John Blackman married Elizabeth Lane sometime during the 1790's. She was a daughter of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford.

Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798.

John Blackman was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next door to Benjamin Blackman, more evidence that Benjamin might be his father. One possible flaw in that, is that in 1790 Benjamin had 5 sons under 16 (born ca 1774/90), and in 1800 he still had five sons in that age group (2 age 16-25 ca 1774/84, and 3 age 10-15 ca 1784/90).

John and wife had a male child born ca 1784/90 with them in 1800. This may be a nephew or younger brother to one of them, or if it is a son, that would suggest they were married before 1790, however,  this probably isn't a son.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Analysis:

1 Male(s) 10-15 (1784-1790)	Son? Nephew?
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1755-1774)	Elizabeth LANE Blackman (1755/74) wife

On 30 Oct 1804 John Blackman witnessed a deed from Reubin and Dorothy Turner to their son Robert Turner. The witness signature said "John", but when the deed was proven, it was written "Joshua" Blackman. However, when proven, it was the clerk who wrote down the name, not the witness himself, so this must be John Blackman. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 231 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

On 26 Jun 1807 Solomon Blackman and John Blackman witnessed a deed between Sarah Herren and her grandchildren Samuel and Nancy Herren. For this one, John signed with an "X", but he didn't sign this way on the previous ones, nor the next one, so that may not mean anything, or it may be an indication that this is a different John who witnessed this deed in 1807. Whoever it is, it shows some sort of connection with Solomon Blackman. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D page 134 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

On 28 Mar 1807 Elizabeth Blackmon witnessed the will of Benjamin Port Barrow in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know if that was Elizabeth Lane, wife of John Blackman, or if there were other Elizabeth Blackman's around at that time. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 34 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 8 Nov 1807 Elizabeth Blackmon was named in the Will of Rachel Ballard, but no relationship was stated, though several others were named with relationships given. This strongly suggests that Elizabeth was a friend, rather than close relative of Rachel Ballard. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 468 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 3 May 1809 Levi Blackman and John Blackman witness a deed between John and Elizabeth Sanders to Solomon Blackman. This shows another connection to Solomon Blackman, and also a connection to Levi Blackman. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H page 21 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

For some reason, John Blackman was not listed on the 1810 census in Marion. It is possible that he moved away temporarily, or that he was just missed for some reason, or that he was residing with another family at that time.

John Blackman was listed on the 1811 Marion tax list, and charged with 80 cents tax.

John Blackman was listed on an 1813 sales or account list in the estate file for William Haselden, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 354 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

John Blackman was listed on the 1814 Marion tax list, and charged with 14 cents tax.

On 3 Dec 1817, John Blackmon was listed among the purchasers at the estate sale of James Crawford Sr. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 162 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

John Blackman was listed on the 1820 census in Marion. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived, nor who his neighbors were. There were three different John Blackman's listed on the 1820 census in Marion, however, I believe the one listed below is this John under study here.

1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820)	Elizabeth "Betsy" BLACKMAN (1817/18) daughter

In the Probate records for John Bethea (1821), John Blackman and Levi Blackman were both listed in the Accounts Current. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 31 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

John Blackman was listed on the 1824 Marion Tax list and charged with 3 cents tax. I don't know if this was the elder John, or one of the other two, but since only one was listed, it is probably this elder one.

On 18 Jan 1828 John Blackman was one of the purchasers at an estate sale for Christopher Dew, deceased. Also in the same estate file, dated 14 Feb 1829 was a John J. Blackman. Perhaps the same person, or perhaps not. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 204 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 14 Feb 1829 a "John J. Blackman" was one of the purchasers at an estate sale for Christopher Dew, deceased. I don't know if the "J" middle initial indicates a different person or not. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 204 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

In September 1829 John Blackman (presumably this one) was dismissed by letter from Catfish Church to go and build up Antioch Church. (Thanks to Bill Snipes for that info).

I don't know when it happened, but Elizabeth Lane Blackman died sometime before 1830.

John Blackman married Martha Jones between 1820 and 1830 in Marion Dist, SC. She is mentioned by Sellers as being a sister to John Jones and Bryant Jones, who were listed as sons of an older John Jones. (History of Marion County, South Carolina, W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 245)

Probate records show Martha is a child of Frederick and Nancy Jones.

John Blackman was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell who his neighbors were.

On 23 Feb 1830 John Blackman was listed among the purchasers at the estate sale of Wiley Hulon, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 359 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 27 Nov 1837 John Blackman (or his son John Jr) was listed as an appraiser for the Estate of Gadi Crawford. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 130)

John was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. No other Blackman's were listed nearby.

On 30 Jun 1840 the Real Estate of Osborne Lane was divided. John Blackman was named as an heir. (Marion Dist, SC Ordinary's Real Estate Book 1826-1843 pg 119 as published in the Pee Dee Queue)

On 3 Nov 1840 John Blackman and wife and others were named in the estate records of Charity Jones as heirs. Charity was a sister of Martha Jones Blackman. This particular record mentioned that some of the heirs were out of state and it seems to say that John Blackman and wife had gone to New Jersey. They way it is worded makes me think it was referring to someone else, but it could have meant them. If they did go to NJ, they were back by 1844 (next record). (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 430 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 16 Dec 1844 John Blackman was listed among the purchasers at the estate sale of John Manning, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 597 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 17 Oct 1845 John Blackman filed a Bill for Injunction and Relief against William R. Johnston. He showed that on 2 May 1842 he purchased a negro woman and child for $800 at a Sheriff's sale from Elly Godbold. (Roll # 135, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucile Utley)

On 25 Mar 1848 John Blackman and Stephen Blackman (his son) were both listed as purchasers at the estate sale of Daniel Hussey, deceased. This John might actually be John Jr instead. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 397 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

John Blackman and wife Martha were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County.

On 21 Jun 1854 John Blackmon was listed among the purchasers at an estate sale for John Coleman Jr, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 982 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

John and Martha were still in Marion Dist, SC for the 1860 census. John's daughter-in-law Emily, widow of Stephen Blackman, was two households away. With John and Martha was a Moses Malloy, age 50, listed as "Idiotic". I don't know who he was, or how (or if) he was related.

On 17 Sep 1860, John Blackman Sr made an affidavit on behalf of his neighbor Martin W. Turner (1816) and in that statement he declared that he (Blackman) would be 84 years old next January. The statement contained genealogical data about the Turners, but nothing about the Blackmans. A month earlier, he had made a similar statement on behalf of the other Martin W. Turner (1820), but in that one gave no indication of his age. (From "Marion County Court Records, Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861" Extracted by Lucille Utley and Transcribed by Teri Dalrymple. Three Rivers Historical Society)

John Blackman died on 2 Oct 1862 in Marion Dist, SC. This was recorded in the Antioch Baptist Church Minutes. (Pee Dee Queue Vol XXIII, No 3, May - Jun 1999).

I didn't find Martha on the 1870 census, so she may also have died during the 1860's, or perhaps she remarried or moved away.

Children

Children of John and Elizabeth are as Sellers listed them. I don't have any other source just yet.

Unknown Son (c1804/10)

Stephen Blackman (1809/10)

John Blackman (1814)

Elizabeth Blackman (1817/18)

Unknown Son born ca 1804/10. Since I don't have the 1810 census listing for John Blackman, I don't know if this child was with him then. He was with John in 1820, but gone by 1830. Since Stephen was born ca 1809/10, this could be Stephen instead of an unknown son. I currently show Stephen to be one of the two in the 1810/20 age group in 1820. If that isn't Stephen in the 1810/20 group, then the unknown son would be one of the two in the 1810/20 age group in 1820. (John born 1814 would be the other). Census analysis is not an exact science, so it is hard to tell sometimes.

Stephen Blackman was born ca 1809/10 in Marion Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census, and possibly with them in 1830, but John only had one child with him in 1830, and he was in the 1810/15 age group, so it could be Stephen, or his younger brother John (1814), and I'd bet it was John Jr instead. So that means Stephen was probably with another family as a laborer or something.

Stephen married Emily --- ca 1835 in Marion Dist, SC.

Stephen died 1859 in Marion Dist, SC. Emily sometime after 1860. See his own page for more information about Stephen Blackman.

John Blackman was born December 1814 in Marion Dist, SC. (I'm not sure the source of that date). He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census.

John married Ann Bird (aka Byrd) sometime before 1839 in Marion Dist, SC.

Ann died in the 1870's, and John married Caroline Mears as his 2nd wife, also during the 1870's.

John Blackman died June 1895 in Marion Co, SC (I'm not sure the source of that date). Caroline died sometime after 1900. See his own page for more information on the John Blackman family.

Elizabeth Blackman was born ca 1817/18 in Marion Dist, SC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census, but not with them in 1830. She would only have been about 12 then, so I'm not sure why she wasn't listed. She may have been residing with another relative since her mother had recently died.

Elizabeth was not with her parents in 1840 either.  At some point prior to ca 1846 Elizabeth married John D. Coleman. She was his 3rd wife.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District.

John D. Coleman died 1 May 1865 in Marion Dist, SC (I'm not sure what the source is for that date).

Elizabeth was listed on the 1870 census in Marion, in Legett township. She was also listed on the 1880 census in Marion in Marion Township. On that census she was listed with Joseph B. Coleman, and listed as his "mother". I had thought he was one of John D. Coleman's sons by a previous marriage, but I could be wrong, or if she were his step-mother instead, he might still have said "Mother" when the census taker asked their relationship. I don't have the 1870 or 1880 census records typed up yet for inclusion here.

Elizabeth died sometime after 1880.
