Margaret Blackman (c1800) of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Blackman > Families > Margaret [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Margaret Blackman, but I am very interested in her though. At this point, I'm not entirely sure if Margaret was a widow of an unknown Mr. Blackman, or if she was a single mother, and Blackman was her surname. Single mother seems more likely based on available evidence. Margaret Blackman was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion Dist, SC. If she were a widow, instead of a single mother, I have no leads on who her husband might have been, nor do I know who her parents were. Margaret was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who her neighbors were, nor where she might have lived. This census shows her with an apparent son born ca 1810/15. That suggests she was married, or having children, already before 1820, but she was not listed on that census. There were several Blackman households in 1820 Marion that had a female her age and a small boy about the age of her apparent son. More research is needed to see if Margaret fits into any of those families. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion District, SC pg 5 Margaret Blackman 0001000000000-0000010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Son? (1810/15) --> gone by 1840 1 Female(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Margaret BLACKMAN (1799/1800) d/o ? Margaret was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. A James Blackman was on the same page, several households away. His age was close to that of Margaret's apparent son from 1830. Margaret Blackman was listed (in 1840) between Joseph Turner and Henry Turner. This seems to be the area along Catfish Creek in an area that could either by Bethea Township or Moody Township. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 140 Margaret Blackman 0000000000000-0100001000000 Analysis: 1 Female(s) 40-49 (1790-1800) Margaret BLACKMAN (1799/1800) d/o ? 1 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Rachel BLACKMAN (1833/34) daughter Margaret Blackman and children were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. Based on their neighbors, it looks like she was somewhere along Catfish Creek still. No other Blackman families were listed nearby. This seems to be Kirby Township.

ChildrenChildren of Margaret Blackman are based on her 1850 census record. The 1830 census shows another possible child.
Unknown Son born ca 1810/15. A child this age was with Margaret in 1830, but gone by 1840. This could be James Blackman who was near Margaret in 1840.
Rachel Blackman born ca 1833/34 in Marion Dist, SC. She was apparently home with Margaret in 1840, and with her for sure in 1850. I didn't find her in 1860, so she may have married or died by then (or moved away).
Willis Blackman born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with Margaret for the 1850 census, but I didn't find him in 1860 or later years, at least not in Marion.
