I've never found any proof that my ancestor Lucinda, wife of Alexander Lane (1787-1858) was a Blackman. Her given name "Lucinda" or "Cynthia" was listed in various records, but I've found nothing to prove her maiden name (other than W. W. Sellers.)

My research on the family hasn't turned up much about who Lucinda's parents were, nor any possible siblings.

I've had little to no help on this family from other researchers. Hopefully someday I'll find someone else working on this Blackman family, or other Blackman families in Marion Co, SC area, and we can compare notes.

So, mainly, I can thank W.W. Sellers who have left us invaluable records of the early families of Marion County.

Soon after I started researching my roots, I discovered that my Lane family was written up in the great book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 and they had an entire article written on them. This article had some mistakes (I later discovered) but it was still most helpful.

In his book, on page 393, here is what he said this about this particular family:

"Alexander Lane, the third son of Osborne, I think, married a Miss Blackman (in this I may be mistaken) ; ... "

The above states Lucinda's maiden name is Blackman, but I've not been able to find any other source to confirm that. Unfortunately, Sellers didn't do a write up of the Blackman family, though he mentioned them a few times in regards to other families. The above also clearly states that he wasn't sure Alexander's wife was a Miss Blackman.

Lucinda Blackman Lane is listed on the 1850 census as "Lucinda" and in 1860 as "Cynthia". I didn't find her in 1870 or later census records.

We know from various Deeds, and from Sellers that the Lane and Blackman families were associated, so there is a good chance he was correct about Lucinda being a Blackman, but I just can't prove it.

Since I have no data on Lucinda's Blackman family, I'll only provide a link to the Lane page that she is listed on, for information on her descendants.

For information on other Blackman families within my area of interest (Marion County, SC and nearby counties) but who are not known to be related to my Blackman family, go to my Blackman Families page
