[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Solomon Blackman, but I'm very interested in him.

Before proceeding, I should note that in the 1780's and 1790's there were two adult men named Solomon Blackman. The older used "Sr", and the younger "Jr", these men could be father and son, or Uncle / Nephew, or cousins. The record is not always clear which was being referenced, so keep in mind there may be some errors or overlap.

Solomon Blackman was born before 1755 (per 1800 census, assuming that was his entry that year). If he was the younger adult in the 1800 household, then census reconciliation shows he was born ca 1755/65.

I don't know where he was born, but possibly in the area that later became Marion County, South Carolina.

I have no record of Solomon's parentage, but he is certainly somehow related to the other Blackmans in Marion including Solomon Blackman Sr, James Blackman, David Blackman and Benjamin Blackman.

One Solomon Blackman was listed on the 1786 Tax list for Prince George Parish in Captain Harldson's Company. He was taxed for 50 acres and 0 blacks. I have assumed that this was Solomon Sr, and not Jr.

On 14 Sep 1787, John Cribb sold 50 acres to Solomon Blackman Jr, on Maiden Down Bay. Witnesses were John Cribb, Thomas Cribb and Benjamin Harrelson. Strangely, when this land was sold in 1792, it was sold by Solomon Sr (Marion Co, SC Deed Book V page 206).

Solomon Blackman was listed on a 1788 petition of residents of Little Pee Dee River. I have assumed that this is Solomon Sr.

Solomon Blackman married someone prior to 1790, probably as far back as the 1770's. I currently have no point of reference to narrow it down any better than that. I have not yet found a record showing his wife's name.

The 1790 census shows two Solomon Blackmans in the Marion County area, one listed as "Jr", meaning he was younger than the other one. I don't know if the two Solomons are father and son or not, though they certainly could be. Considering the fact that there were two of them, I may have them fairly mixed up in the few records that exist in the name of "Solomon Blackman". I should note that only one was listed on the 1786 taxlist, and one on the 1788 petition, and only one on the 1800 census. The 1790 census is the first record I have showing that there were two of them.

Solomon Blackman Jr was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, SC in Prince George Parish. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine who his neighbors were. I'm assuming that "Jr" was a different Solomon Blackman from the one listed in 1786 and 1788.

1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1790 Georgetown District, SC, Prince George Parish pg 53 Solomon Blackmon Jr 1-2-1-0-0
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774)	Solomon BLACKMAN (bef 1755)
2 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790)	Son? (1784/90)
					Son? (1784/90)
1 Female(s) any age (before 1790)	Wife? (Bef 1755)

On 30 Jan 1792, Solomon Blackman Sr sold 50 acres to Thomas Cribb, being part of a 200 acre tract originally granted to John Cribb in 1768. Witnesses were John Cribb Sr and John Cribb Jr and Benjamin Harrelson. I have some trouble here, for a 1787 deed shows John Cribb selling this same land to Solomon Blackman Jr. Either one of these deeds may have been misread, or perhaps Solomon "Jr" sold it to "Sr" between 1787 and 1792.  (Marion Co, SC Deed Book V page 207).

Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798, effective 1800.

The records after this point never include "Sr" or "Jr", so it is clear only one of the Solomon's was still around. My best guess is that Solomon Sr died sometime around here. The last positive record I have is the 1792 deed. The 1800 census record (see below) may be Solomon Jr, and the extra people could be his in-laws, instead of Solomon Sr and wife.

The 1800 census only shows one Solomon Blackman listed. I don't know if it is "Sr" or "Jr". The household is too large to be easily reconciled back to either one from 1790. It seems a reasonable guess that both Solomon Sr and Jr were in this household together in 1800. That would explain the number of adults in the household, but again, it is just a guess. These other folks could be a brother and his family, or perhaps Solomon's wife's parents. There are many possibilities. Solomon was listed next door to Hardy Crawford and James Waters.

1 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800)	Daughter?

Since it is not clear which Solomon was still in Marion after 1800, I'm working on the assumption that all the remaining records are for Solomon Jr's.

On 26 Jun 1807 Solomon Blackman and John Blackman (1777) witnessed a deed from Sarah Herren to her grandchildren Samuel and Nancy Herren. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 134, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book).

On 27 Jan 1808 Charles Campbell and Solomon Blackman witnessed a deed from John Cribb  to John Campbell. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 262).

Solomon Blackman was listed on the 1809 Marion Voter list.

On 3 May 1809, John Sanders and wife Elizabeth sold 250 acres to Solomon Blackman, land on Pigeon Bay. Witnesses were Levi Blackman (1790/94) and John Blackman (1777). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H, page 21, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books F through K are also from this book).

Solomon was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District. He was listed between John Jones and Richard Howard. No other Blackmans were nearby.

Solomon Blackman was listed on the 1811 Marion Tax List and taxed 80 cents.

For the War of 1812, Solomon Blackmon enlisted as a Private in Captain Elisha Bethea's Company, 5th Regiment South Carolina Militia, serving from 29 Jun 1812 to 29 Sep 1812.

Solomon Blackman was listed on the 1814 Marion Tax List and taxed 34 cents.

On 13 Apr 1816 Solomon Blackman and Christopher Dew both made statements on behalf o Falisha Braington in regards to her being a white person. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 325).

Solomon Blackman was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

I did not find Solomon on the 1824 tax list, nor on the 1830 census, so he may have died in the early 1820's. There are no apparent widows listed in 1830 Marion who could have been Mrs. Blackman, so she may have died in the 1820's also.

I did find a Solomon Blackman (1750/60) on the 1830 census in Monroe Co, AL. He was next door to a younger David Blackman (who could be a son). This county was full of former Marion Co, SC residents, so it is entirely possible this is the same Solomon Blackman. More research is needed though.

Children

Solomon Blackman and wife had several children per the various census records. None are positively identified. I found no Equity or Probate records for him, nor other document proving any of his children. There was an 1809 deed to Solomon that was witnessed by Levi Blackman (1790/94) and John Blackman (1777) suggesting that they are somehow closely related.

Unknown Son (1784/90). Solomon Blackman had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 ("under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800 (10-15, born ca 1784/90) and still home in 1810 (16-25, born ca 1784/94), but gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.

In 1820 there were several new Blackman heads of households in Marion who roughly fit this age grouping. One of them could be this son of Solomon: James Blackman (1775/94), John Blackman (1775/94), and Levi Blackman (1775/94). One of these could be Solomon's son.

Since he was not there in 1790, it is possible that this was not a son at all, but someone else just living with the family in 1800.
