I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 5 times removed to John Blackman via my Lane ancestry. I don't know how (or if) I'm related to him via my Blackman ancestry.

Stephen Blackman was born ca 1809/10 in Marion Dist, SC. According to W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 389, Stephen Blackman, was a son of John Blackman and Elizabeth Lane (daughter of Osborne Lane).

Here is what Sellers wrote about Stephen Blackman (page 388 and 389) in the Lane family writeup (anything in brackets [] was added by me):

... (pg 389) Of the daughters, one, Elizabeth [Lane], married old John Blackman, a son of the old Tory John, that Colonel Murphy tied and whipped; by this marriage were three children born and raised, as known to the writer---Stephen Blackman and John, called Jack; the name of the daughter was Elizabeth, or Betsey; ...

... Stephen Blackman married some one, to the writer not known ; he died many years ago, and left a son, William, called Billy Blackman, and is now a middle-aged man and lives somewhere in the Latta neighborhood ; married, and has a family.

On 31 Dec 1829 Stephen Blackman was listed among the purchasers at the estate sale for Mourning Beckwith, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, Roll # 53 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

Stephen Blackman married Emily --- ca 1830/35 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name is not known, and I have no leads on it at present. She may be a second wife, and if so, they probably married between 1840 and 1846. Certain evidence makes it seem likely that Emily is a 2nd wife, and that his first wife died ca 1840. The 1840 census showing a wife much older than Emily is a strong clue, and the older children of Stephen Blackman seem too old to be Emily's.

Stephen was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed next to his brother John Blackman. The age for Stephen's apparent wife on the 1840 census is way older than Emily (born ca 1823/24), so this may be an indication that Emily was a 2nd wife. If that is so, I don't know who his first wife was.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1840 Marion District, SC pg 137 Stephen Blackman 0200010000000-1000001000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	Stephen BLACKMAN (1809/10) s/o John & Elizabeth
2 Male(s) 5-9 (1830-1835)	William BLACKMAN (1835) son
					Son? (1830/35) –> gone by 1850
1 Female(s) 40-49 (1790-1800)	Emily — Blackman (1823/24) wife? Or this could be a 1st wife
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Joanna BLACKMAN (1836/37) daughter

Stephen's 1st wife (if there was one), probably died ca 1840 or close afterwards. His next child was born ca 1846, so that makes it seem likely that Emily and he married between 1840 and 1846.

On 25 Mar 1848 John Blackman and Stephen Blackman were both listed as purchasers at the estate sale of Daniel Hussey, deceased. This John might be John Sr or perhaps John Jr instead. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, Roll # 397 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

Stephen and Emily and children were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. They were just six houses away from Samuel Turbeville, 26 and his wife Celia, 30, who had a 10 year old Elizabeth Blackman residing with them. My theory (and it is just a theory) is that this Elizabeth Blackman is a daughter of Stephen Blackman and his first wife, and that his first wife died ca 1840, (possibly in childbirth), and that Elizabeth was sent to relatives to be raised. This often happened to the youngest child when the mother died, especially if the child was an infant. If this theory is correct, then that suggests that Samuel and / or Celia Turbeville are relatives of Stephen Blackman's first wife, or of Stephen himself. More research is needed on this.

Stephen Blackman was baptized on 2 Oct 1853 at the Antioch Baptist Church, per the church minutes (thanks to Bill Snipes for the Church Minutes).

On 15 Oct 1853, Stephen Blackman was listed among the notes in the estate of Matthew Mace, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, Roll # 596A by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 26 Aug 1854 Stephen Blackman was listed among the purchasers at an estate sale for Joseph R. Bass Sr, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, Roll # 953 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 23 June 1858 "S. Blackmon" witnessed the Will of Robert Hussey. This Will was proven on 17 Feby 1858 by S. Blackmon and the other witnesses. The first date might be January instead of June, or else something is out of whack here. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, Roll # 1046 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

Stephen Blackman died in 1859 according to the Antioch Baptist Church minutes. (thanks to Bill Snipes for the Church Minutes).

Stephen's widow Emily was listed on the 1860 census just two houses from Stephen's father John Blackman.

Emily Blackman was dismissed from the Antioch Baptist Church in December 1865 (no reason stated). (thanks to Bill Snipes for the Church Minutes).

Emily may have died between December 1865 and 1870, or possibly remarried or moved away. I didn't find her on the 1870 census.

Children

Children of Stephen Blackman and his first wife (if there was one) and Emily are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census records.

William Blackman (1835)

Joanna Blackman (c1837)

Elizabeth Blackman (c1840)

Henry (or Haynes) Blackman (c1846)

William Blackman was born April 1835 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

For the Civil War, William Blackman enlisted in Company E, 23rd Regiment, and was promoted to First Corporal. (History of Marion County, South Carolina, W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 610)

William Blackman married Margaret --- ca 1864/65 in Marion Dist, SC.

I didn't find them on the 1870 census, at least not in Marion County.

For the 1880 census, I found them listed in Moody Township.

Joanna Blackman was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

She was baptized on 10 Aug 1854 per the Antioch Baptist Church Minutes, listed as "Joan Blackmon". (thanks to Bill Snipes for the Church Minutes).

Joanna married my Uncle Joseph M. Lane between 1860 and 1867 in Marion Dist, SC. She was listed with her new family on the 1870 and 1880 census in Moody Township, Marion County, SC. See Joseph's page for more information on this family.

Elizabeth Blackman was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC. I have no proof that she is a child of Stephen Blackman, but it seems likely. For the 1850 census, Elizabeth was just six houses from Stephen, in the household of Samuel Turbeville, 26 and Celia age 30. My theory is that Elizabeth was the last child born of Stephen and his first wife, who either died in childbirth, or while the baby was still small, and therefore she went to live with relatives.

I didn't find Elizabeth on the 1860 census, so she may have married (or died) by then. She wasn't with the Samuel and Celia Turbeville family in 1860.

Henry (or Haynes) Blackman was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. I found no record of him after 1860.
