[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to William Blackman, but I'm very interested in him.

William Blackman was born ca 1774/84 (per 1800 census), presumably in the area that later became Marion County.

William Blackman could be a son of James Blackman (bef 1755) but that is far from proven. I'm basing it only on two things: one, William was living "next door" to James in 1800, and, two: James was old enough to be his father. This is not really enough to prove that James is William's father, but I'm sure they are closely related in some fashion. Based on census analysis, it doesn't really fit for William to be James' son. I'd guess that David Blackman (1744) is a more likely candidate.

William Blackman was not listed on the 1790 census, so he was probably still home with his parents. He would have been listed in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). 4 out the 5 Blackman's in 1790 Georgetown had at least one son in that age group, so this doesn't help much to narrow down his possible parents: Benjamin Blackman (bef 1755), David Blackman (1744), James Blackman (bef 1755), and Solomon Blackman Jr (1755/65). Looking to 1800 we can narrow it down a little bit more, for all of these (except David) was still in Marion that year. Solomon Jr still seemed to have all his sons at home in 1800, as did James and Benjamin. That means (based only on census analysis) that none of those three are likely William's father. That leaves David who, unfortunately, was missing in 1800. However, this does make him the prime suspect. James could be William's Uncle or related in some other way.

Marion District was formed from Georgetown District in 1798, effective 1800.

William Blackman was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next door to James Blackman, and also next to Jesse Evans. William had two adult females with him, one born ca 1755/74, the other 1774/84. One is probably his wife, but I can't be sure which one was.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1800 Marion District, SC pg 445/789 William Blackman 20100-10110
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784)	William BLACKMAN (1774/84) s/o ?
2 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800)	Son? (1790/1800)
					Son? (1790/1800)
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1755-1774)	Wife? (Or Mother?) (1755/74)
1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784)	Wife? (1774/84)
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800)	Daughter? (1790/1800)

William was not listed on the 1810 census in Marion, nor did I find him in neighboring counties that year. There was a William in Lancaster Dist, SC that year, but I think that was a different William (who was in Lancaster back in 1800 as well).

It seems likely that William and family moved out of South Carolina before 1810. As you can imagine, there were lots of William Blackmans in other states in 1810, 1820, etc.

Children

William Blackman and wife had at least three children per the 1800 census. I have no additional data on them so far.
