Stephen Braddy and --- and Sarah Williams of Duplin Co, NCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Braddy > Families > Stephen [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of Stephen Braddy, assuming that he is indeed the father of my ancestor Fairlise Braddy. I have very little data on Stephen Braddy, but I’ll write down what little I know about him. First of all, I don’t know for sure if he is my ancestor. I’m assuming he is because he is the only Braddy in the area old enough to be the father of my Fairlise Braddy (1770/75). If he isn’t her father, he is at least related in some fashion or so it would seem. Stephen Braddy was born before 1758. I base this on him being a landowner by 1779, and since he was probably 21 or older by then, , he had to have been born ca 1758 or earlier. His entry on the 1786 census shows him 21 and up (born before 1765). If he is the father of Fairlise Braddy (1770/75), then that would put his birth at ca 1750 or thereabouts, give or take a few years. I don’t know where Stephen Braddy was born, but I would guess Duplin County, North Carolina, as that is where he was found later on. He apparently lived in what is still Duplin County right around present day Albertson on Matthews Creek (or Branch). I have not done an exhaustive search of Duplin County records to see what can be found on the Braddys, but I have found some data. I do not have the name of Stephen Braddy’s first wife, though if she were the mother of Fairlise and Thomas Braddy, then they had to have married before ca 1775. Stephen Braddy was already a land owner by 1 Jul 1779 for he was named as an adjoining land owner in a State Grant to William Sutherland in Duplin County. The Grant was described as being on the East Side of the N E (North East Cape Fear River) and on both sides of Matthews Branch joining Juniper Branch, Bishops old Corner and Stephen Braddy. (from "North Carolina Abstracts of State Land Grants, Vol I" by Margaret M. Hofman) I searched the published Duplin County deeds for the period of 1750 through 1780's, and did not find when or how Stephen Braddy obtained the land he owned on Matthews Branch. He may have received it as a Land Grant, but I found no record of it in the published Grants. 18 Oct 1784, Stephen Braddy and Solomon Carter were witnesses to a deed from Richard Munds of Duplin to Edward Carter of Dobbs, for 300 acres North of Northeast Fork and West of Buck Marsh and Poley Bridge Branch on Jesse Pipkins Line. This is right in present Duplin County in the corner with Wayne and Lenoir County. (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 1A page 133).On 18 Jan 1785, Stephen Braddy and David Green were witnesses to a deed from William Southerland to Solomon Carter, for land on the East side of the North East (Cape Fear River) on Matthews Branch and Stephen Braddy’s line. This is just south of the 1784 deed near the present community of Albertson. (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 1A page 213).Stephen Brady is listed on the 1786 State Census in Duplin County, North Carolina. 1784-1787 NC census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1787 Duplin Co, NC pg 30 Stephen Brady 1-1-1-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 21 - 60 (1726-1765) Stephen BRADDY (bef 1763) 1 Male(s) -21 +60 (1765-1786) Thomas BRADDY (1780/82) son? 1 Female(s) all ages (bef 1786) Fairlise BRADDY (1770/75) daughter On 18 Mar 1786, Stephen Braddy and Loftis Worley witnessed a deed from William Mercer to Frederick Smith for land on the East side of North East (Cape Fear) and North side of Limestone Creek and both sides of Cabbin Branch. This is close to present day Beulaville. (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 1A page 254).On 16 Oct 1786 a court record was filed: "Granted Stephen Brady’s petition to have his Mill as a Public Grist Mill & he be entitled to all priv & advant as are allowed to persons keeping a Publick Mill". (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1784_1787 Part 1", by Leora H. McEachern, 1978)On 15 Oct 1787 in Duplin Court, it was ordered that several men, including Stephen Brady be part of a jury to lay off a road. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1784_1787 Part 1", by Leora H. McEachern, 1978)Sometime ca 1788 (no date given), Stephen Brady was on another road Jury ordered to lay off a road from New Road crossing Limestone (creek) above Samuel Whaley’s to Purgatory where Limestone Road joins the Onslow County line. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1788_1791 Part 2", by Leora H. McEachern, 1979)Mrs. Braddy must have died before 1790, for on 19 Jan 1790, Stephen Braddy married Sarah Williams in Duplin County. Stephen Brady was listed on the 1790 census in Dobbs County. He was in Duplin County before and after then, so this may indicate a temporary move, or else just a poorly defined border. He did live in the area near the Duplin - Dobbs (now Lenoir) County line. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Dobbs Co, NC pg 137 Stephen Brady 1-1-4-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Stephen BRADDY (bef 1763) 1 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Thomas BRADDY (1780/82) son? 4 Female(s) any age (before 1790) Sarah WILLIAMS Braddy, wife, m 1790 Fairlise BRADDY (1770/75) daughter? Daughter? * Not in 1786 Daughter? * Not in 1786 On 18 Jul 1791, Stephen Braddy appeared in court to prove (as a witness) a deed from Anthony Jones to William Churchwall for 80 acres. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1791_1795 Part 3", by Leora H. McEachern, 1980)On 21 Apr 1794, Stephen Brady appeared in court to prove a deed from Jesse Pumphrey to Solomon Carter of which he was a witness. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1791_1795 Part 3", by Leora H. McEachern, 1980)In Court on 18 Apr 1796, it was ordered that Stephen Brady and others appear as jurors for the next court. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1795_1798 Part 4", by Leora H. McEachern, 1980)Stephen Braddy was listed in Court records dated 18 Jul 1797 showing a list of the Insolvents for the year 1795. He was listed with 3 polls (which was probably for himself, and two sons). "Insolvents" were those who either couldn’t, or didn’t pay their taxes. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1795_1798 Part 4", by Leora H. McEachern, 1980)The 1797 Court record is the last record I’ve found for Stephen Braddy. He may have died between then and 1800. The 1797 record only mentioned him as insolvent, it is entirely possible that he was already dead by then, or that he had moved away. I did find two tax entries in Montgomery County, Georgia for a "Stephen Braddy" dated 1805 and 1806. I have no way to know if it is the same man or not, but it certainly could be. I have not yet found additional data on that Stephen Braddy. ChildrenI have found no direct proof for any children of Stephen Braddy, but I do believe that he is the father of at least two children: Fairlise Braddy and Thomas Braddy. I base this only on them being in the same area as him, and Stephen being the only possible candidate. The 1790 census entry for Stephen showed him with four females. Assuming one was his wife Sarah whom he married that same year, and assuming one was daughter Fairlise, that leaves two other possible daughters, though since they weren't with him in 1786, and he didn't remarry until 1790, perhaps these are not his children. All speculation of course. Fairlise Braddy was born ca 1770/75 (per census analysis). She is not a proven child of Stephen Braddy, but he is the only other Braddy in the area, so he is the prime (and only) suspect. Fairlise may have been with Stephen for the 1786 census. His census entry only showed one female with him, so it could be Fairlise, assuming that Mrs. Braddy had already died by then. No ages were given for females on that census. Fairlise may have been with Stephen for the 1790 census. His census entry showed four females with him, so one of them could be Fairlise. Fairlise was not listed on the 1800 census, so I don’t know where she was that year, but she was probably still in Duplin County living with other relatives. The first two records found for Fairlise are a little confusing. If I’ve interpreted them correctly, she married a Mr. Ayers first, who died, then she married Henry Hobson, but had a child out of wedlock with Jacob Monk, and the child took the Braddy surname, so he must have been born before her marriage to Mr. Ayers. (See I told you it was confusing). Fairlise married a Mr. Ayers (or Ayer) before 1801, or at least that is what the records seem to indicate. I have no clue who her Ayers husband was. There was a Thomas Ayers on the 1806 Duplin Tax list, but that can't be her husband, but could it be their son? Two different Thomas' showed up on the 1810 Wayne County census, one born before 1765, the other ca 1765/84. Both seem to old to be a child of Fairlise, but probably somehow related to her deceased husband. I thought she might be connected to Henry W. Ayer (1794/1800-1839) of Cumberland Co, NC (he was Clerk of Court there for a time) because he was bondsman for the marriage of her son William Hobson when he married in that county. It may just be a coincidence, but then again perhaps he is related to Fairlise's first husband somehow. On 15 Oct 1801, Henrey Hobson obtained a marriage bond in Duplin County to marry Fairlise Ayers. William Taylor was the bondsman. Henry Hobson was born before 1765. On 20 Oct 1802, Fairlise was named in Duplin County court. Jacob Monk was charged with "begetting a bastard child of Fairlise Braddy (now Hobson). Ordered Clerk take bond according to law". (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1798_1803 Part 5", by Leora H. McEachern, 1982)The above record is very informative. First is shows that Fairlise’s maiden name was Braddy, and is the same person married to Henry Hobson (even though her marriage record to him gave her name as Ayers). This record further shows that she had a child out of wedlock by Jacob Monk. Since she married in 1801, the child was probably born before then. As far as I can tell, Fairlise had one child prior to her marriage to Henry Hobson, I have tentatively assigned John Braddy (c1802) as her son perhaps by Mr. Monk but I could be wrong about that. By law, a child born out of wedlock would take the mothers name as it was at the time the child was born. If she were still unmarried when her child was born, it would have taken the Braddy surname. If she was already widowed from Mr. Ayers, when she had a child, it would take the Ayers name, even if not fathered by her late husband. As I said, I have no direct evidence that John Braddy is her child at all, but that is supposition based on him living near her other children later on. He could be a son of her possible brother Thomas Braddy instead. Fairlise and her husband Henry Hobson moved to neighboring Wayne County, North Carolina by 1810. Fairlise died there in the 1840's. See Henry Hobson's page for additional information on his and Fairlise's family. Thomas Braddy was born before 1775 (per 1820 census) or ca 1780/90 (per 1830 and 1840 census), probably in Duplin County. He is not a proven child of Stephen Braddy, but it seems the only possible answer. He was probably home with Stephen for the 1786 census (aged "under 21", born ca 1765/86), and probably home in 1790 ("under 16", born ca 1774/90). He did not appear on the 1800 census, but was probably living with relatives. On 20 Dec 1801, Thomas Braddy married Dorcas Carroll in Duplin Co, NC. In 18 Oct 1804 Court, Thomas Brady was listed among a list of insolvents for the year 1803. This means he didn’t (or couldn’t) pay his taxes for that year. (From "Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1803_1805 Part 6", by Leora H. McEachern, 1984)I did not find Thomas Braddy on the 1810 census, either in Duplin or Wayne County. Thomas is listed on the 1820 census in Wayne County, as is an Abel Braddy. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can’t tell who his neighbors were. The 1820 census entry for Thomas seems to be in error in several ways, including Thomas’ apparent age, and the apparent age of his wife. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Wayne Co, NC pg 456 Thomas Braddy 102201-10100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1775) Thomas BRADDY (1780/82) s/o Stephen 2 Male(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Son?
