Introduction - A History of my research on this family

My Campbell Family - Data on my Campbell ancestors

Introduction

When I first started doing family history (in 1980), I began with my dad's side of the family, but very soon I turned to my mother's side. I knew she was a Campbell, and her mother was a Turner, and I also knew I had Edwards and Watson ancestors on her side also. That was about all I knew starting out. My mother (Alice Faye Campbell Grant) told me about both of her grandmothers (Henrietta Edwards Campbell and Zadie Idell Watson Turner) whom she knew quite well. At this point in time (c1984) my own grandmother Campbell was long dead, and my grandfather Campbell had just died a few years before, so my mother referred me to my Great Aunt "Dot" (Dorothy Turner Campbell) who was considered the authority on our family history. I was in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota, so Aunt Dot and I carried on a correspondence by letter. In just one letter she gave me just about the entire Campbell (and Turner) family history that I now have. She knew it all mostly from her own knowledge, she hadn't been doing any research, this was just information she knew. Dot was my grandmother's sister (Gertrude Turner Campbell) and her husband Aubrey Campbell was a 1st cousin to my grandfather (Alva Gabriel Campbell) so she had data on both sides of my mother's family. I owe her a great deal for what she shared with me.

Soon I discovered that my Campbell family was written up in the great book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 and they had an entire article written on them. This article had some mistakes (I later discovered) but it was still most helpful.

I went to the Marion County, SC Court House for the first time in the mid 1980's and while there, a lady sitting across from me (who was also doing research) asked me what family I was looking for. I told her "Campbell" and she asked which family. I told her, and she informed me we were cousins, since she was from the same line. Small world! Anyway, she told me to go to the Public Library and look at the Rev. Simeon Campbell Diary, as it contained a great deal of data on my Campbell family and many other families. Needless to say, I was very grateful for this information. I took down her name and address (and lost it before I got home, so to this day, I still don't know who this helpful cousin was!).

The Reverend Simeon Campbell (1829-1912), who was a 1st cousin (many times removed) of mine, kept a diary including family histories, births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and funerals for his relatives and neighbors and many others. This huge document (actually a typed transcript) is on file at the Marion Library and is available for viewing. I have a copy, which I have considered transcribing, or scanning, to put it online, but I doubt I will ever do it since it is so large. Anyway, it also contained valuable information on our Campbell family.

So, I'd like to give a special "thank you" to my mother (Faye Campbell Grant) and my Great Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell 1927-1994) for their help on this family. I'd also like to thank W.W. Sellers for his book, and my cousin Simeon Campbell (1829-1912) for his diary. Over the years I've heard from lots of my Campbell cousins, and all (or most) of them have added little bits of data to the family tree, so thanks to all of them as well. I'd also like to thank all my Aunts, Uncles and cousins who have shared data with me on their branches of the family.

My Campbell ancestors

My earliest known ancestor John Campbell was born 6 Jan 1752 in Scotland (per Simeon Campbell) and came to Marion County, SC area sometime before 1790. He married Ann Cribb who was born 1 Dec 1757 (also per Simeon Campbell). Simeon's diary gives the names and birth dates of their children, and traces those children down at least one more generation. W.W. Sellers also outlines this family in his book, though he mistakenly listed John (1752) as "James" and said the family came from VA, which I don't believe is correct. Other than that, his article is fairly accurate.

John Campbell and family settled in the Maiden Down Bay area (near Millers Church) in Marion County, SC. For many generations his descendants remained in Marion County, in fact I was born there myself (in Mullins).

By 1850 almost all of John Campbell's descendants were still to be found in Marion County, SC.

I have set up several web pages, each containing documentation, for different branches of this family. Follow the links below for more information.
