John Campbell (1752) and Nancy Ann Cribb of Marion Co, SCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Campbell > Families > John [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of John Campbell and Nancy Ann Cribb. John Campbell was born 6 Jan 1752 somewhere in Scotland. He came to America sometime before ca 1775 and settled in the Maidendown Bay area of Marion County, SC (then still part of Georgetown District). I don't know if John Campbell came over by himself, or as a child with his parents. I have no clues as to who his parents are, or if they also lived in Marion. By the time of the 1790 census, there were 4 Campbell households in Prince Frederick Parish and 5 in Prince George Parish (including John). These two parishes included what is now Marion County. I have no clue if all of these Campbell's were related to one another. John Campbell married Nancy Ann Cribb sometime prior to 1775. Her parents haven't been positively identified, but I suspect she is a daughter of John Cribb and a sister to Thomas Cribb and John Cribb (Jr). See the Cribb pages for more on her family. She is referred to as "Ann" in some records, "Nancy" in others. These two names are used interchangeably, one as a nickname for the other. John Campbell's family was documented in the diary of his grandson, Simeon Campbell:
W.W. Sellers also mentioned him in his book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902, though he mistakenly listed him "James" instead of "John":
Although Sellers stated that this family of Campbell's came from Virginia, I haven't found any evidence of that (so far). It is possible that old John Campbell stopped over in VA briefly before coming to SC before 1775, though I don't know how to prove it. John Campbell was listed on the 1786 Tax list for Prince George Parish (Georgetown District) listed in Captain Haraldson's Company. He was listed with 150 acres, and no slaves. He signed a 1788 petition as a resident of Little Pee Dee. John Campbell was listed on the 1790 census in Prince George Parish, Georgetown District. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Prince George Parish, Georgetown District, SC pg 53 John Campbell 1-3-4-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) John CAMPBELL (1752) s/o ? 3 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) John CAMPBELL (1779) son James CAMPBELL (1780) son Gadi CAMPBELL (1784) son 4 Female(s) any age (before 1790) Mother? (Bef 1755) Nancy Ann CRIBB (1757) wife Nancy Ann CAMPBELL (1775) daughter --> m ca 1799 Mary CAMPBELL (1777) daughter In the 1790 census, he had one extra female (who can't be accounted for), and in 1800 he also had an extra female, born before 1755, so I think this is John's mother, or else his mother-in-law. In 1798 Marion District was created from Georgetown District. There were two John Campbell's listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC, one was too young to be ours, but the other was the right age. Several of the children don't line up perfectly with the age categories, but this is the right family. 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Marion District, SC pg 448/792 John Campbell 31101-11011 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1755) John CAMPBELL (1752) s/o ? 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) John CAMPBELL (1779) son 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1784-1790) James CAMPBELL (1780) son 3 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Gadi CAMPBELL (1784) son Jeremiah CAMPBELL (1791) son Theophilus CAMPBELL (1796) son 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Mother? The deed was signed by several people. My belief here is that they were the heirs of Jeremiah Payne (named in the deed as the person the land was granted to). John Campbell and Stephen Ford's connection could be as Executor or administrator of the estate, but I'm not sure. The signatures included: John Campbell, Stephen Ford, Elizabeth (X) Payne, Pricilla Payne, Sally Payne, Rebecca Payne, James Oats, Bennet Flowers. Witnesses were Moses Smith and Joseph Pouns. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 91). Stephen Ford and a widow Elizabeth Payne lived very near John Campbell in 1800. I don't think the above deed implies that John Campbell was an heir to the estate, though it could mean that, but I don't know what the relatioship is. On 13 Dec 1806 Dempsey Campbell sold 120 acres of land to John Campbell, land on the south side of Buck Swamp near Maiden Down Creek. Dempsey Campbell lived very near John Campbell in 1800, and is the right age to be a son of John, but is probably a nephew instead, or a younger brother. I'm sure they are related in some fashion. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D page 48). On 27 Jan 1808 John Cribb sold 100 acres of land to John Campbell. This is land on Maiden Down Swamp, being part of a 13 May 1768 grant to John Cribb (the deed says grant to John "Campbell" but all subsequent references say John "Cribb"). The deed was witnessed by Charles Campbell and Solomon Blackman. This Charles Campbell could be a younger brother of John Campbell. John Cribb (who sold the land) was probably a son of the John Cribb who was originally granted the land in 1768. I believe that John Cribb (Jr) was a brother-in-law of John Campbell. The deed was signed by John Cribb and his wife Ann (X) Cribb. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D page 262). John Campbell was not named on the 1809 voter list for Marion Dist, SC so either he didn't vote, or was dead by then. He was dead before 1810 however. John Campbell was not listed on the 1810 census but his widow was listed as head of household. According to Simeon Campbell, John Campbell was the first person buried at the Campbell cemetery (named after him of course). 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion District, SC pg 84 Nancy Campbell 01110-11001 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Gadi CAMPBELL (1784) son 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Jeremiah CAMPBELL (1791) son 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Theophilus CAMPBELL (1796) son 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1765) Nancy Ann CRIBB Campbell (1757) wd/o John 1 Female(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Elizabeth CAMPBELL (1794) daughter 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Daughter? Ann Campbell was listed on the 1811 Marion tax list and charged with 12 cents tax. Ann Campbell was also listed on the 1814 Marion tax list and charged 61 cents tax. She was named in a deed dated 5 Jan 1816 as an adjoining land owner for land on the south side of Buck Swamp, bordering on "Nancy Campbell Senr". (Mairon Co, SC Deed Book F page 321). I don't know when Nancy died, but it was probably sometime between 1814 and 1820. Though she was mentioned in the 1816 deed, that doesn't mean she was still living at the time. The 1820 census showed her son Jeremiah Campbell as a head of household (though single at the time) apparently with his younger brother and sister with him. Nancy is also buried at the Campbell Cemetery, according to Simeon Campbell. ChildrenJohn and Nancy had several children, all proven by the Diary of Simeon Campbell, and also by W.W Sellers. They are also proven by several deed records wherein they sold land they inherited from John Campbell. Nancy Ann Campbell was born 14 Mar 1775, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). She married John Huggins before 1799 in Marion Dist, SC. See her own page for additional information. Mary Campbell was born 15 Mar 1777, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). She married Willis Huggins (cousin of John Huggins above) before 1806 in Marion Dist, SC. See her own page for additional information. John Campbell was born 9 Jun 1779, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). John Campbell married, though he probably had no children, or at least none we know of. We don't know who his wife was either. See his own page for additional information. James Campbell was born 7 Nov 1780, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). He married Mary Barnes 1815 in Marion Dist, SC. See his own page for additional information. Gadi Campbell was born 25 May 1784, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). He married Mary Norton before 1820 in Marion Dist, SC. See his own page for additional information. Jeremiah Campbell was born 28 Nov 1791, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). He married Patience Scott before 1830 in Marion Dist, SC. See his own page for additional information. Elizabeth Campbell was born 27 Feb 1794, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). She never married, but had at least one child out of wedlock, the Rev. Simeon Campbell. He left us a diary giving a wonderful record of the Campbell family and numerous other families. See Elizabeth's own page for additional information. Theophilus Campbell was born 20 Oct 1796, presumably in the Maidendown Bay area of then Georgetown District (now Marion). He married Celia Perritt before 1830 in Marion Dist, SC. He was the only one of this family to leave Marion County, moving first to Covington Co, AL shortly after 1850, then to Shelby Co, TX before 1860. See his own page for additional information.
