Revision History:

·        1 Sep 2008 – Reformatted by Marty Grant.

·        28 Apr 2008 - Created by Marty Grant, a 7th great grandson of George Cathey. Special thanks to Boyt Cathey for sharing information on this family.

RN=5355 in Cathey book.

George Cathey was probably born in the 1730’s. A birth date of 14 Sep 1735 is floating around for him, but where did it come from? What is the source for it? His birth place is listed as Dublin, Ireland by some, but again, what is the source for that?

If he was born in Dublin, then he probably isn’t related to the other Catheys in North Carolina for none of them came from Dublin as far as is known. I suspect he wasn’t born in Dublin at all, but probably in Northern Ireland or perhaps in Pennsylvania.

How is George related to the other Catheys of the United States? Since the name “George Cathey” is pretty common among the other Catheys it is difficult to know which George is being referred to on any particular record. What we do know for sure is that this George lived in NC and had land in TN and was dead before 1819.

The undocumented birth date and birth place is joined by another undocumented item: the name of his wife as Ann Price. Where did her name come from? I’ve found nothing so far to prove her name was Ann, much less Ann Price. However, that doesn’t mean it is incorrect. It must have come from somewhere!

As I mentioned earlier there were many George Catheys around in the 1700’s, so how can we know which record belongs to this George Cathey? I don’t think there is an easy way to do it other than to list all the records and eliminate those that are unlikely matches. Here is an outline of documented early George Catheys. The “RN” numbers are the ID numbers used in Boyt Cathey’s book and used by the Cathey Reunion Association:

·        RN=18 George Cathey (c1700 – ca 1765 NC), wife Jean (d 1777 Mecklenburg Co., NC).

·        RN=407 George Cathey (c1717 – bef 1790 NC), wife Margaret. Often referred to as George, Esquire.

·        RN=86 George Cathey (c1724 PA – 1801 Mecklenburg Co., NC), wife Frances Henry; he is a son of George Cathey (RN=18) and wife Jean.

·        RN=5355 George Cathey (1735), the one we are studying now, wife Ann Price. Parents unknown.

·        RN=134 George Cathey (c1743), son of Andrew Cathey (RN=84) and Martha of Mecklenburg Co., NC.

·        RN=?? George Cathey baptized 15 Nov 1747 Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, Augusta Co., VA, a son of George Cathey (RN=407). Nothing else known of this George.

We know our George was in North Carolina at some point, but we don’t know when he arrived or where he lived early on. Anson County was formed in 1750 from Bladen; and Rowan County was formed in 1753 from Anson. These two counties were the homes of several Catheys. These counties were also carved up over the years into smaller counties.

Some Anson County deeds of interest from the book Anson Co, NC Deed Abstracts 1749-1766, Abstracts of Wills and Estates 1749-1795:

1.      24 Jun 1750 Earl of Granville to George Cathey, 312 acres on north side of James Cathey’s land. (Book B, page 174)

2.      6 Feb 1752 George Cathey and wife Jane of Anson County to John Lynn, 312 acres. (Book B page 178).

3.      25 Dec 1752 George Cathey Jr of Anson to William Mackey, 613 acres. (Book B page 312).

4.      14 Jul 1753 George Cathey Jr and wife Sarah of Anson to Charles McPeters. (Book B page 361).

5.      16 Jul 1755 George Cathey and wife Sarah of Anson to William Alexander of Rowan County, 150 acres (Book C page 298).

6.      16 May 1758 George Cathey of Anson to Martin Pifer, 300 acres including place where Andrew Cathey formerly lived. Witnessed by John Cathey, John Dunn. (Book C page 397).

7.      10 Jul 1758 George Cathey Sr and wife Jean of Rowan to their grandson John Tool of Anson, 400 acres. Witnessed by Andrew Cathey, Thomas Braly, Archibald Cathey. (Book 6 page 148).

8.      7 Dec 1758 George Cathey Jr and wife Frances of Rowan, to John Bravard, Esquire, and Robert Lucky. (Book 6 page 123).

9.      20 Jan 1762 George Cathey and wife Margaret of Anson to Peter Kuykendall of Anson, 800 acres.

Notice how many different George Catheys those nine deeds seem to represent. George (RN=18) and wife Jane/Jean are in deeds 1, 2 and 7. George (RN=86) and wife Frances Henry are in deed 8. George (RN=407) and wife Margaret are in deed 9. I don’t know who George and wife Sarah are (Deeds 4 and 5) , nor which George is referenced in deeds 3 and 6.

Is our George Cathey among these? Only if his wife was named Sarah, which is possible.

On 5 Dec 1756 James Cathey (RN=401) made his Will in Rowan Co., NC naming, among others, a son George Cathey, who was also named as executor. (Rowan Co., NC Will Book A page 50). This is generally thought to be George, Esquire (RN=407), but could it be our George (RN=5355) instead?. It seems doubtful though, as our George is probably too young to be among James’ children considering the ages of his other kids.

By the 1770’s our George had moved to Burke Co., NC (formed 1777 from Rowan), though he may not be the only George Cathey in the records there.

George is mentioned several times in the book Burke County North Carolina Land Records, 1778 Volume I, Edith Warren Huggins, Southern Historical Press, 1985:

1.      On 16 Feb 1778 George Cathey received a state land grant of 640 acres on French Broad River above Sugar Loaf Mountain.

2.      On 23 Feb 1778 William Cathey (probably his son) received a land grant of 100 acres on the north fork of the Catawba River adjoining lands of George Cathey and Henry Young.

3.      On 8 Jul 1778 William Cathey received a grant of 640 acres on Turkey Cove which was formerly entered (claimed) by George Cathey.

4.      On 19 Dec 1778 James Cathey received a grant of 100 acres on the north side Catawba adjoining George Cathey.

It isn’t 100% certain that this is our George Cathey, but it could be.

Where was our George for the 1790 census?  There are five men of this name listed in western North Carolina and in neighboring South Carolina. That is one in Burke, one in Lincoln, two in Mecklenburg, and one in Abbeville (SC). Here are the entries for comparison:

Burke Co., NC p. 106 George Cathey 2-3-4-0-5
Lincoln Co., NC p. 115 George Cathey 1-1-3-0-2
Mecklenburg Co., NC p. 158 George Cathey 2-0-3-0-5
Mecklenburg Co., NC p. 158 George Cathey Sr 3-1-3-0-5
Abbeville Dist., SC p. 59 George Cathey 1-3-2-0-0

There is no way to be sure which of these is our George (RN=5355), or if in fact any of them are him. It is entirely possible our George was already in Tennessee at this time, and the early census records for Tennessee are lost. The one in Lincoln and one of those in Mecklenburg is positively identified as other Georges.

The one in Burke County in 1790 is of special interest. He is listed near several of the names on the 1823 Court Case (which names the heirs of George Cathey), so this could be the same George. He was in the 1st Company of Burke County and others near him included Robert Reed (son-in-law), William Cathey (son), William Neall (the subject of the 1823 court case), Elijah Patten (son-in-law), John Reid (son-in-law), James Neal (mentioned in 1823 court case), Marget Cathey (widow of George Cathey, RN=407) and Andrew Neal (mentioned in 1823 court case). The main probably is that the enumerations for George of 1790 Burke doesn’t match. On the other hand it matches perfectly with the family of George Cathey (RN=1301).

We have the same problem on the 1800 census, several Georges, but none that seem to be ours:

Buncombe Co., NC p. 165 George Cathey 00100-00000-0-0
Buncombe Co., NC p. 165 George Cathey Sr. 31001-21001-0-0
Lincoln Co., NC p. 827 George Cathey 21010-32010-0-0
Mecklenburg Co., NC p. 527 George Cathey 00111-00101-0-9

The older one in Buncombe is almost certainly George (RN=1301), and the younger one is of course too young. The one in Lincoln and the one in Mecklenburg are positively identified already as other Georges.

George Cathey, and probably Mrs. Cathey were dead before 1 May 1823 for on that date a suit was filed against his estate:

Wilson Co., TN Robert Neill, Complt vs. George Cathey et al (long list of heirs).

William Neil, complainants father sometime in the month of Oct 1783 gave to George Cathey L65 10s, 6p to securing land in Western Country, now state of TN. Obtained 640a with William Campbell on 26 Jun 1795 grant was issued on south side of Cumberland River on Spencers Creek.

William Neil gave to his son John Niel the above tract who sold it to brother Robert Neill.

William Cathey and George Cathey, sons of George, and his executors, conveyed said land to John Neil. Violet Cathey on of the daughters of George Cathey, decd, and John Reed who married Esther another of the daughters, executed a deed of relinq.

Alexander Neil and James Neil, brothers to the complainant dated 24 Aug 1819 relinq all their rights to the land. Another deed of relinq dated 1 aug 1821 John Neil, James Neil, Sarah Neil, John Plumley, William Plumley, Archibald Plumley, Jacob Howes, Hannah Howes, Benjamin Howes, and William Howes.

"That George Cathey, Violet Cathey, Jane Adkins, Samuel Lusk and his wife Betsy, Benjamin Burgen and his wife Mary are the children & heirs of said George Cathey decd. that George Patton, John Logan and his wife Rebecca are grand children of said George Cathey Senr decd. by his daughter Margaret who intermarried with Elija Paton and who are both deceased. Also Robert Cain & Daniel Cain are grand children of said George decd by his daughter Elizabeth who intermarrired first with Robert Cain, also James Reed grand child of said George decd by his daughter Elizabeth by her second husband Robert Reed, the same Robert Cain, Robert Reed and Elizabeth being now all dead. Also Robert Patton and his wife Rebecca who is a daughter of said George decd. John Reed and his wife Esther, who is also a daughter of said George decd. Also Andrew Neil and his wife Mary the said Andrew being a son of William Neil decd. and his wife Mary a daughter of said George decd. Also Robert Gillespie and his wife Anne grand daughter of said George decd. by his son William Cathey and George Cathey, James Cathey, and Andrew Cathey and William Mahafy and his wife Betsey grand sons and daughter of said George deceased by his son William Cathey now decd.”

The above court case proves the family of George Cathey quite thoroughly, but of course it doesn’t answer some critical questions, such as when and where did George die, who was his wife, where did they come from, etc.

Children of George Cathey and Ann Price. The 1823 court case names nine children and numerous grandchildren. The age difference between the oldest and youngest children strongly suggests that George was married more than once.

1.      William Cathey

2.      Elizabeth Cathey

3.      Rebecca Cathey

4.      Margaret Cathey

5.      Mary Cathey

6.      Violet Cathey

7.      Esther Cathey

8.      Ann Cathey

9.      George Cathey (1784)

William Cathey was born before 1755 (per age on 1800 census).

William Cathey was named in the 1823 court case as a son of George Cathey (Sr). That same court case mentioned that William was one of George Sr’s Executors, so that means he was at least 21 when George Sr died. The case also mentions that William was dead by 1823 and names his children as: Robert Gillespie and wife Anne; William Cathey; George Cathey; James Cathey; Andrew Cathey; William Mahafy and wife Betsey.

See his page for more information on his family.

Elizabeth Cathey was born before 1755 per her age on the 1800 census.

Elizabeth Cathey, daughter of George-5355 was named in the 1823 court case as having been twice married, first to Robert Cain, and second to Robert Reed. All three were deceased as of 1823. Three children were named: Robert Cain, Daniel Cain and James Reed.

Her first husband Robert Cain died before 1790. She married Robert Reed before 1790. He was born ca 1755/65, so a little younger than Elizabeth.

I found them on the 1790 census in Burke County near many of the other relatives named in the 1823 court case:

Burke Co, NC pg 88 Robt Reed age 16+ (bef 1774) "1-4-3-1"

There was also a Robert Reed in Mecklenburg and one in Wilkes Co, NC.

Robert Reed was listed on the 1800 census in Buncombe Co, NC.

Buncombe Co, NC pg 187 Robert Reed age 26-44 (1755/74) "01310-30001"

Robert Reed was listed on the 1810 census in Haywood Co, NC:

            * Haywood Co, NC pg 72 Robert Reed age 45+ (bef 1765) "00101-01201"

I was unable to find Robert Reed in 1820, so he was probably dead by then (certainly dead by 1823).

Rebecca Cathey was born before 1765 per her age on the 1810 census.

Robert Patton and wife Rebecca were named in the 1823 Court case as heirs of George Cathey, Rebecca being his daughter.

Considerable information (but little documentation) is available for this couple on the Internet. I tried to ignore all of that and see what I could find in actual documentation, but didn’t find much .

There were several Robert Pattons in Western North Carolina, in fact I am a descendant of one of them: Robert Patton, died 1772 Rowan Co, NC, wife Charity. They were parents of Margaret Patton (1749-1814) who married Cpt. William H. Moore (1726-1812) who’s first wife was Ann Cathey daughter of George Cathey, Esquire (RN=407).

This particular Robert Patton (and wife Rebecca Cathey) was born ca 1740/50 (per 1830 census).

There were two men of this name in Burke Co, NC for the 1790 census:

Burke Co, NC pg 96 Robt Patten age 16+ (bef 1774) "1-1-3-0-0"

Burke Co, NC pg 102 Robt Patten Sad age 16+ (bef 1774) "1-2-5-2"

I don’t know what the “sad” means after one of the names, could it mean “Saddler” as in an occupation? Census takers often listed occupations as a way to distinguish two men of the same name.

I only found one Robert Patton in our area in 1800, he was in Burke:

Burke Co, NC pg 782 Robert Patton age 45+ (bef 1755) "11001-32010-0-2"

In 1810 there was on in Buncombe and one in Burke, both roughly the same age:

Buncombe Co, NC pg 264 Robert Patton age 45+ (bef 1765) "00101-00101-0-11"

Burke Co, NC pg 352 Robert Patton age 45+ (bef 1765) "12101-12201-0-4"

The one in Burke seems like a better match due to the number of children.

In 1820 there were three in Western NC (two in Buncombe, one in Burke) and two in TN (both in Sumner County).  Of these five, only two were old enough to be this same Robert, one in Buncombe and one in Sumner:

Buncombe Co, NC pg 118 Robert Patton age 45+ (bef 1775) "000001-00001"

Sumner Co, TN pg 333 Robert Patton age 45+ (bef 1775) "010001-00101"

In 1830 there was a Robert Patton Sr in Buncombe living by himself, so apparently widowed:

Buncombe Co, NC pg 272 Robert Patton Sr age 80-89 (1740/50)  "00000000001-0"

I can’t be sure if I’ve identified the right Robert Patton, but if I have, he was born ca 1740/50 and lived in Burke and Buncombe County. His wife (Elizabeth Cathey) was born before 1765 and died between 1820 and 1830.

Years ago Lawrence Wood sent me a family group sheet of this family, similar to one on Elijah Patton (and Robert and Elijah are supposed to be brothers). I have no documentation for this family, but no reason to doubt it is accurate, it looked something like this:

Robert Patton

born 1742 (fits with 1830 census)

died: 11 Nov 1832 Gibson Co, TN

Rebecca Cathey

no dates (my data shows born before 1765, died 1820/30)

Children:

  1. Sarah Patton married William Edmundson
  2. James Patton (? NC - ? MS)
  3. Ann Catherine Patton (? NC - ? TN) married Hance M. McWhorter
  4. Margaret Patton (? NC - ? TN) married Abner Burgin
  5. George Patton (1786 NC- 1840 NC) married Nancy Patton (d/o Aaron)
  6. Elizabeth Patton (1788 NC - 1860 TX) married James Patton (s/o Elijah) and 2nd David Crockett (U. S. Congressman from Tennessee, and hero of the Alamo.)
  7. Matilda Patton married Peter Trosper
  8. Rebecca Patton married James Edmundson

I’ll assume the above is accurate, but I can’t prove any of it right now.

Margaret Cathey was born ca 1755/1765 per census analysis. Elijah Patton and wife Margaret, daughter of George-5355 were named in the 1823 court case. That case stated that both Elijah and wife were dead then and named two children as heirs instead: George Patton and Rebecca wife of John Logan. Some of their other children were also named, but mistakenly listed as George Cathey’s children instead of Margaret’s: Jane Adkins, Betsy Lusk and Mary Burgin.

Elijah Patton was born before 1755 (per 1800 census) and died between 1820 and 1823 in Burke, now McDowell, Co, NC. His wife Margaret Cathey was born ca 1755/65 (per 1800 and 1810 census) and died between 1810 and 1820 in Burke, now McDowell, Co, NC. They appear on the Burke Co, NC census in 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820. There was another Elijah Patton very near by across the border in Rutherford Co, NC (also in the section that became McDowell County later). This other Elijah was younger, but his wife was also named Margaret. They were clearly two different couples though coincidently all four died in the 1820's.

Elijah Patten and Elijah Jr, the “other” one, were both listed in Burke in 1790, though not near each other. Elijah the elder was near George Cathey and was next door to William Neil of the 1823 court case.

Burke Co, NC pg 88 Elijah PATTEN age 16+ (bef 1774) "1-2-6-0-2"

Still in Burke for the 1800 census:

Burke Co, NC pg 782 Elijah PATTON age 45+ (bef 1755) "21101-12010-0-5"

Still in Burke for the 1810 census:

Burke Co, NC pg 124 Elijah PATTON age 45+ (bef 1765) "00001-00021"

Margaret Cathey Patton died 13 Jan 1813 according to her tombstone (which I have not seen).

Elijah Patton was listed on the 1815 Burke County tax list in Captain Dobson’s Company and taxed for 922 acres on behalf of William Patton (brother?) and listed on his own for 587 acres on Catawba River, and 4 polls.

Still in Burke for the 1820 census, though apparently Margaret had died by then:

Burke Co, NC pg 93 Elijah PATTON age 45+ (Bef 1775) "000001-00020"

I think there is an 1833 estate record or something like that for this Elijah Patton, I don’t seem to have it, but I do know he was dead well before then. He does not appear on the 1830 census.

Lawrence Wood (deceased) sent me a family group sheet of this family, but unfortunately no sources. At the time I wasn’t interested enough to ask for more details.

Mary Cathey was born in the 1750’s or 1760’s probably.

Andrew Neil and wife Mary were named in the 1823 Court case as heirs of George Cathey, Mary being his daughter.

There is an Andrew Neal in Burke Co, NC in 1790 three houses from George Cathey and next door to widow Margaret Cathey.

Burke Co, NC pg 88 Andw Neall age 16+ (bef 1774) " 1-1-4-0-0"

They were not found in W.NC in 1800, perhaps they had moved to TN by then (1800 census lost for TN). I didn’t find them in 1810 either.

I found two possible matches in 1820 Tennessee, though can’t be sure if either is this same couple:

Bedford Co, TN pg 17 Andrew Neill age 26-44 (1775/94) "200010-20100"

Giles Co, TN pg 6 Andrew Neale age 26-44 (1775/94) "100010-20010"

I have no additional data on this family.

Violet Cathey is listed as a daughter of George in the 1823 court case. Since all his living children were quite old by then we can conclude Violet was single, or else had married a Cathey cousin who had died before 1823 (since no spouse was named).

I didn’t find her on any census records, so she probably spent her life with siblings.

Boyt Cathey’s data shows she was born 1761, and died 28 Oct 1848 in Marshall Co, TN. I don’t know the source for that, but it fits.

Esther Cathey was born 8 Apr 1767 (per tombstone), in North Carolina.

John Reed and wife Esther were named in the 1823 Court case as heirs of George Cathey, Esther being his daughter.

They were listed near the other 1823 court case heirs on the 1790 census in Burke County. They were next door to James Neall who was mentioned in the case. They were just five houses from George Cathey:

Burke Co, NC 1st Company Jno Reid age 16+ (bef 1774) "1-0-3-0-0"

In 1800 there were two John Reeds in Burke County:

Burke Co, NC pg 786 John Reed age 26-44 (1755/74) "00010-20010"

Burke Co, NC pg 789 John Reed age 45+ (bef 1755) "10001-11001"

In 1810 there were no John Reeds in our part of Western NC. They may have gone to TN by then. I found too many men named John Reed/Reid in other states in 1810 and later, so I couldn’t really do much with this family. They were still alive in 1823 obviously. It is unlikely that they would have still been alive in 1850, but possible.

Ann Cathey is not mentioned in the 1823 court case, but her husband Alexander Neil was mentioned, though not as an heir of George Cathey, but rather as a brother of the plaintiff. What is the proof that his wife was a Cathey, and a daughter of George Cathey?
George Cathey was named in the 1823 court case as a son of George Cathey (Sr). That same court case mentioned that George (Jr) was one of George Sr’s Executors, so that means he was at least 21 when George Sr died.

Others have identified this George (Jr) as a man born 1784 who died in 1866 in Marshall Co, TN. I don’t know what evidence was used to make this George (1784) the son of George Cathey Sr (RN=5355) but I have a little trouble with the dates. This George (1784) seems way too young to me. He could be a grandson of George Sr, but to be his son it would have to be by a second wife, which is possible of course.

I am of the tentative opinion (and I could be very wrong about this) that George, son of George (RN=5355) is the same as George (RN=1301) who was born 1755 and who lived in Burke and Buncombe Co, NC and later in Cooper Co, MO and was a Revolutionary War soldier. This George (RN=1301) is currently shown to be a son of George Cathey (RN=407) and Margaret. I don’t know how that connection was made.

What do we know about George (1755-1840)? In his pension application he claims he was born in 1755 in Mecklenburg Co, NC.  He lived in Mecklenburg Co, NC and Burke and Buncombe and Haywood Co, NC before moving to Missouri.

I don’t know what proof there is linking him to George (RN=407), but he makes a good candidate to be a son of George (RN-5355) too.

This needs much more study.
