> James Crawford
The author (Marty Grant) is
a 1st cousin 6 times removed to James Crawford.
Note: In the very early 1800's there were at least
four adult men named "James Crawford" in Marion Dist, SC. This has made positive
identification difficult at best. However, generally speaking, they did
attempt to distinguish themselves. For example, this James under study here
(born ca 1780/84) was almost always listed as James Crawford "Jr", whereas his
father James Crawford (1749) was
almost always listed as "Sr". The other two were
James G. Crawford (c1784/90)
(a.k.a. "Cype") and James Crawford
(c1755/74). It is not always clear which James is being referenced in any
particular record. They were all related to each other (apparently) and
therefore related to the same people, so it is hard to tell from the context
which was which, except in some cases.
James Crawford was born ca 1780/84 in Georgetown
Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a proven son of
James Crawford Sr (1749-1817) as
named in his father's 1816 Will. James' mother is not known.
Sellers included data on James Crawford's family.
Some of his data is mixed up (generally so on any facts that predate him, he was
born in 1818):
"James Crawford, the grand-father of the late
Chapman Crawford, had a son named James, the father of Chapman; whether there
were other sons or not, is not now known..."
("A History of Marion County, South
Carolina", 1902, page 142, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)
Sellers gave more data on James (Jr) and family:
"James Crawford, the father of Chapman J.
Crawford, married Miss Rachel Nevils, and by her had two sons, Chapman J., and
William H., and three or four daughters; one married Peter P. Johnson, of
Fayetteville, NC; one married D. C. Milling, of Darlington, and one married D.
J. McDonald, long a merchant at Marion, and Representative from Marion in the
State Legislature in 1850, and finally failing in his business, removed to
Arkansas. James Crawford, the second, was a very prosperous man, left a large
estate, and died in the prime of life. His widow, Rachel, married Dr. Cherry,
and by him had several daughters ...". ("A
History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 143, by W. W. Sellers,
Esq)
James Crawford was apparently home with his
parents for the 1790 census, listed in the "under 16" age group (born ca
1774/90).
James Crawford was apparently home with his
parents for the 1800 census, listed in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90).
On 24 Nov 1804, James Crawford Sr and Enos
Tart and James Crawford Jr witnessed a deed from Charles Meloy to Sarah
Tart. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C, page 256,
from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E
1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)
James Crawford Jr was listed on the 1809
Voter list for Marion District.
There were several other records in various Marion
District documents for "James Crawford" in the 1800-1810 timeframe, but most
were of little genealogical significance, and I don't know which of them are for
this James or for the other two James' still living then (the other
James Crawford died ca 1804).
James Crawford Jr was listed on the 1810
census in Marion Dist, SC. There were three James Crawfords listed in 1810, this
James was living by himself, and listed as "Jr", so it seems very likely he is
the correct one. He was listed next to Right Bass (who was then married to the
widow of the other James Crawford)
and John Owens.

James Crawford Jr was not listed on the 1811 Marion District Tax list, so
apparently he owned no taxable property, or was exempt that year for some
reason.
He also was not listed on the 1814 Marion District Tax list.
James Crawford married Rachel Nevils
sometime ca 1810/1815 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name was given by Sellers
(quoted above) and is also proven by the Will of her father William Neavil
of Marlborough District, SC. ("Marion County
South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 15, Roll # 47, by Lucille
Utley)
Rachel Nevils (spelled various ways, including "Neavil")
was born ca 1795/96 in SC, presumably in old Georgetown District (now Marion
County).
James Crawford was named in the Will of his father
James Sr written 17 Sep 1816. James was also named as Executor of the Will.
On 22 Nov 1817, James and Rachel Crawford, John
and Martha Gasque and Abjiah and Charity Porter sold land to John Tart, selling
"tract known by name of Slake Mash & Horse Pineland, being 2 tracts one of 100a
the other 200a". These were three of the heirs of James Crawford, deceased the
deed does not say this though). Witnesses were John Tart (Jr presumably) and
John Owens. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I, page
69, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I &
K 1811-18231", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)
On 4 Jul 1818 James and Rachel Crawford sold 300
acres to John Tart (his brother-in-law), land on Gum Swamp, North side of Great
Peedee River. Witnesses were Isom Moody, Newel Drew, and Enos Tart.
(Marion Co, SC Deed Book H, page 1, from
"Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K

On 12 Dec 1818, James and Elizabeth Ervin of
Marlborough Dist, SC sold James Crawford 1000 acres on North East side of
Catfish Creek, and another 1000 acres on the east side of Catfish.
(Marion Co, SC Deed Book I, page 259, from
"Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K

On 3 Jan 1819, James Crawford and John Gibson and
Francis A. Wayne witnessed a deed from Henry Davis, Sheriff to Thomas Avant.

James Crawford died ca 1827 in Marion Dist, SC,
having left a Will (which I don't have a copy of yet).
On 27 Dec 1826, an Administration Bond was made by
Rachael Crawford, Administratrix and John C. Bethea and John A. Cherry,
Administrators. The Probate file contains several documents.
(Probate Roll # 158, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South
Carolina Volume One", page 122, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
On 26 Mar 1827, An Inventory and Appraisement of
James Crawford's estate was returned. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory

James' widow, Rachel Nevils Crawford, married Dr.
John A. Cherry on 26 Feb 1829 in Marion Dist, SC (date of marriage proven
in Equity records). Dr. Cherry was born ca 1790/1800, though I don't know
where. I don't think he was from Marion originally. I don't know who his parents
were.
John Cherry was listed on the 1830 census in
Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so I can't say who his neighbors
were.

John A. Cherry died on 1 Aug 1845 (per Equity
Records) in Marion Dist, SC. This date conflicts with probate records filed 8
Jul 1845 when Mrs. Rachael Cherry and Duncan J. McDonald applied for letters of
administration for his estate. (Probate Roll # 169, published in
"Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", page 127, by
Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
Rachel and some of her children were listed on the

daughter Caroline Crawford McDonald.

suspect she died young, or perhaps this was not a daughter at all, but a niece
or something.

Amanda Crawford
was born ca 1815/20 in Marion Dist, SC.
She was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census (listed as age "under
10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently with them in 1830 age 10-14 (born ca
1815/20).
According to Equity records, Amanda Crawford
married Henry L. Cannon. They married sometime after 1830 and probably
before 1840. ("Marion County
South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 15, Roll # 47, by Lucille
Utley)
I did not find Henry L. Cannon on the 1840 census
in Marion. I found a "Henry L. Cannon" on the 1840 census in Adams Co, MS. I
don't know if it is the same person or not though. I found other "Henry Cannon"
listings in Alabama and elsewhere.
I did not find Henry L. Cannon on the 1850 census.
I found a widow Amanda Cannon in 1850 Lowndes Co, MS, she was age 30 (born ca
1819/20) and born in SC, as were her older children. I don't know if this is the
same person as Amanda Crawford or not. I just thought I'd mention her as a
possible match.
Chapman J. Crawford
was born ca 1816/17 in Marion Dist, SC. He was
apparently with his parents for the 1820 census (listed as age "under 10", born
ca 1810/20), and apparently with them in 1830 age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).
Chapman was twice married, first to a Miss
Jolly, and second to Mary Margaret ---.
See his own page for additional information.
William H.
Crawford was born ca 1818/19 in Marion
Dist, SC. He was apparently with his parents for the 1820 census (listed as age
"under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently with them in 1830 age 10-14 (born
ca 1815/20).
According to Sellers, William H. Crawford married
on 10 Feb 1840 (he mentioned it as the same date Queen Victoria of England was
wed). He married Margaret E. Durant. Margaret was born ca 1822/23 in
Marion District. I don't know who her parents were.
I did not find William H. Crawford listed on the
1840 census. It is possible that he was there, but was missed, or that he was
living with another family. He did not appear to be with his mother and
step-father. He might have been residing with his wife's parents, whomever they
were. There were only two Durant families in 1840 Marion, one was George Durant
(c1790/1800) and the other W. W. Durant (c1810/20). Both households had two
males in the ca 1810/20 category, but George Durant's household seems more
likely to contain William and Margaret Durant Crawford. Of some special note is
that William and Margaret named one of their sons "George D. Crawford", which
makes a lot of sense, if her father was George Durant. Sellers stated that
Margaret Durant was a sister to Rev. H. H. Durant.
William and Margaret and family were listed on the
1850 census in Marion Dist, SC just two houses from Rhoda Crawford Godbold
(daughter of Hardy Crawford).

According to Sellers, William H. Crawford went to
Georgia and died there. This means he died before 1900. I don't know yet how
much of his family also went, nor where it was he went to specifically.
Martha A.
Crawford was born ca 1821/22 in Marion
Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born
ca 1820/25) and she did not seem to be with them in 1840. I don't know where she
was that year, though I don't think she was married yet.
She married Peter P. Johnson ca 1840/42 in
Marion Dist, SC. He was from North Carolina somewhere. He was born ca 1811/12,
and I don't know who his parents were.
After marriage, they lived in Fayetteville,
Cumberland Co, NC.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Cumberland
Co, NC in the Town of Fayetteville. Two apparent brothers (or nephews) were
residing with them as well. Martha's birth place was listed as "NC" by mistake
(a common census error).

They were still in Cumberland for the 1860 and 1870 census. Peter P. Johnson
died in the 1870's. Martha and children were listed on the 1880 census in
Cumberland.
Caroline M.
Crawford was born ca 1825/26 in Marion
Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under
5", born ca 1825/30) and she seemed to still be home in 1840 age 10-14 (born ca
1825/30).
Caroline married Duncan J. McDonald between
1840 and 1846. Duncan was born ca 1815/16 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know
who his parents were, but Sellers stated he was a brother of John H. McDonald.
Duncan and Caroline were listed on the 1850 census

I did not find this family in 1870 in Marion Co,
SC. Sellers stated that they went to Arkansas, so it would seem they went in the
1860/70 timeframe. I have not yet found out where they went in Arkansas. I did
find a widow Caroline McDonald on the 1870 census in Arkansas Co, AR. She was
the right age and born in SC, but none of her children's names matched.
Elizabeth
Crawford was born ca 1825/27 in Marion
Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under
5", born ca 1825/30) and she seemed to still be home in 1840 age 10-14 (born ca
1825/30).
Elizabeth Crawford married David C. Milling sometime ca 1840/50. He
was of Darlington District, per Sellers.
They were listed on 1840, 1850 and 1860 census
for Darlington Dist, SC, ** I don't have these entries typed up yet.
David apparently died in the 1860's, for Elizabeth was listed on the 1870
census in Darlington County without him. Strangely, she was listed as black,
though all her children were white.
Elizabeth Crawford Milling appears to have died in the 1870's in Darlington
County for I didn't find her on the 1880 census but her children were still
there, some of them living together.
Louisa Cherry
was born in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know her
exact age. She died between 1845 and 1850. She was mentioned in the Equity
records for John Cherry and it stated that she died since her father (who died
in 1845).
Susan W. Cherry
was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist, SC.
She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca
1825/30) and she seemed to still be home in 1840 age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).
She married Dr. Richard J. Scarborough
between 1845/1850 in Marion Dist, SC. He was born ca 1824/25 in Marion Dist, SC.
Richard is a son of Addison L. Scarborough.
Richard J. Scarborough died 9 Sep 1854 per Equity
records. ("Marion County South Carolina
Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 136, Roll # 407, by Lucille Utley)
After her first husbands death, Susan married
Major Oliver Perry Wheeler in Marion District, this was sometime after
1855. He was born ca 1825/26 in Marion Dist, SC, and had been married prior to
his marriage to Susan. He was a son of General Edward B. and Clara Wheeler.
I did not find them on the 1860 census.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion, in
Rowell Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Oliver P. Wheeler apparently died between 1870 and
1880.
Susan W. Wheeler was listed on the 1880 census in
Marion Township, by herself. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Rachel N. Cherry
was born ca 1832/33 in Marion Dist, SC.
She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, age 5-9 (1830/35).
She was with her widowed mother for the 1850
census.
Rachel married Cornelius Graham between
1850 and ca 1859. Cornelius was born ca 1824/25 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know
who his parents were, but for the 1880 census it was listed that his father was
born in Scotland, and his mother in North Carolina.
They were listed on the 1860 census just a couple
of houses from her mother. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Rachel died shortly after 1860, in Marion Dist,
SC.
Cornelius and their surviving son Herbert were
listed on the 1870 census in Marion Dist, in Marion Township, with Rachel's
widowed sister Sarah Cherry Wheeler, residing with him. ** I don't have this
entry typed up yet.
Cornelius and son Herbert were still in Marion
Township for the 1880 census, and his sister-in-law Sarah was still living with
him. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Sarah Jane Cherry
was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC.
She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census, age 5-9 (1830/35).
She was with her widowed mother for the 1850
census.
Sarah married Dr. Hamilton B. Wheeler in
October 1856 (per Equity records). ("Marion
County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 59, Roll # 188, by
Lucille Utley)
Hamilton B. Wheeler was born ca 1833/34 in Marion
Dist, SC, son of General Edward B. and Clara Wheeler. Hamilton was a brother of
Oliver Perry Wheeler who married Sarah's sister Susan Cherry.
Hamilton and Sarah were listed on the 1860 census
in Marion Dist, SC. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Hamilton B. Wheeler died in October 1866 in Marion
Dist, SC. ("Marion County South Carolina
Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 136, Roll # 309, by Lucille Utley)
Sarah was listed on the 1870 and 1880 census with
her brother-in-law Cornelius Graham (married to her sister Rachel, see above).
