John Cribb (1761) and Sarah --- of Georgetown Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to John Cribb, but I'm quite sure I am related to him somehow. John Cribb was born 29 Dec 1761 in Craven (now Georgetown) Co, SC. His Family Bible records are recorded in "Old Southern Bible Records", by Memory Aldridge Lester, published in 1974. His entry is on page 89. This record gives data on John and several of his sons, and references the "John Cribb Family Cemetery in Georgetown County". I'm sure if the dates given were from a Family Bible, or from tombstones. Since no death dates were mentioned, it looks like a family bible record was used for the births. I don't know who John Cribb's parents were. I have not found any likely suspects yet. John Cribb married Sarah --- sometime prior to 1789 in Georgetown Dist, SC. She was born ca 1755/74. I don't know what her maiden name might be. They were in Prince Frederick Parish in 1789 through 1794 when the births of three sons were recorded there (in 1789, 1790 and 1794). Prince Frederick covered a large area, so I'm not sure where this was precisely. John Cribb was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, SC in Prince Frederick Parish. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were to determine if he was in present Marion or present Georgetown County. There were three Johns listed in 1790, but only this one was in Prince Frederick, the other two were in neighboring Prince George Parish. We know it was this John (1761) in Prince Frederick since he was in the records there in 1789 and 1790 and 1794. He seemed to have a fairly large family here in 1790, but most of these other apparent children were gone by 1800. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census). 1790 Georgetown Dist, SC Prince Frederick Parish pg 50 John Cribb 1-4-3-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) John CRIBB (1761) s/o ? 4 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? (Bef 1790) –> gone by 1800 There were three John Cribbs listed in 1800, one in Marion District, and two in Georgetown District, Winyaw County (present Georgetown County). I feel fairly sure that the one listed as John "Sr" in 1800 Georgetown is the same one we are studying here (born 1761). The one in Georgetown labeled John "Jr" is the same as John Cribb (1775) son of Thomas (1731) and Ann Cribb. John Cribb "Sr" was listed between John Dozier and Margaret Rowland. 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Georgetown Dist, SC pg 757/371 John Cribb Sr 41010-00010-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) John CRIBB (1761) s/o ? 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1784-1790) Eli CRIBB (1789) son 4 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Noah CRIBB (1791) son Manuel CRIBB (1794) son Stephen CRIBB (1796) son Henry CRIBB (1799) son 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) Sarah — Cribb (1755/74) wife In 1810, there was only one John Cribb in Georgetown. I'm not totally sure it is John (1761) or not, as the enumerations are not a perfect match with his known family members. It is probably him though, but there is some doubt. Certain aspects of this 1810 entry more closely align with the John Cribb (Jr) (1775) entry from 1800, so that is the source of my confusion here. If this entry in 1810 is for this same John (1761), then his son Eli was not home any longer (he was 21, so could have been anywhere). His three youngest sons were all mis-enumerated, and he had an apparent daughter in 1810 who was not there in 1800. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Georgetown Dist, SC pg 216 John Cribb 30101-01010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 and up (bef 1765) John CRIBB (1761) s/o ? 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Noah CRIBB (1791) son 3 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Manual CRIBB (1794) son Stephen CRIBB (1796) son Henry CRIBB (1799) son 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Sarah — Cribb (1765/74) wife 1 Female(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800) * Not in 1800 I did not find John nor Sarah listed on the 1820 census. They may have moved away, or possibly they died in the 1810/20 timeframe. Their sons were still in Georgetown in 1820 and later, so it would seem likely that John and Sarah died in this timeframe, as opposed to having moved away somewhere. ChildrenJohn and Sarah (---) Cribb had five children per the Prince Frederick Parish records and the Family Bible record mentioned before. The census records may indicate other children as well. Unknown Son (1774/90). John Cribb had an apparent son this age with him in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), but he was gone by 1800, so possibly married or dead by then. I have no idea who this could have been. Unknown Son (1774/90). I have no idea who this could have been. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). John Cribb had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1790 (no ages given, so born sometime before 1790), but she was gone by 1800, so possibly married or dead by then. I have no idea who this could have been. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). John Cribb had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1790 (no ages given, so born sometime before 1790), but she was gone by 1800, so possibly married or dead by then. I have no idea who this could have been. Eli Cribb was born 20 Apr 1789 (per Prince Frederick Parish records) or 22 Apr 1789 per the Bible records mentioned earlier. The Bible record gives his name as "Samuel", but all other records I've seen give it as "Eli" or "Elie". Eli seems to have been home with his parents in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and apparently still with them in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90). He did not seem to be home in 1810, but since he was 21 then, he could have been living elsewhere, though still unmarried. Eli Cribb married someone prior to 1820. I have no data on his family members yet. Eli was listed on the 1820 census in Georgetown Dist, SC. His household contained several older people, so he may have had some of his siblings with him. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Georgetown Dist, SC pg 168 Eli Cribb 101010-20110 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) Eli CRIBB (1789) s/o John (1761) & Sarah 1 Male(s) 16-17 (1802-1804) * Brother? I don't have the enumerations yet. ** I didn't see Eli Cribb listed on the 1850 census index in Georgetown. More research is needed on Eli Cribbs family. Noah Cribb was born 23 Dec 1790 (per Prince Frederick Parish records) or 24 Dec 1791 per the Bible records mentioned earlier. Both records give his name as Noah Cribb. Noah seems to have been home with his parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and with them in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94). Noah Cribb married Martha --- before 1820 in Georgetown Dist, SC. She was born ca 1804/05. I don't know her maiden name. Noah Cribb was listed on the 1820 census in Georgetown Dist, SC. He may have had one of his younger brothers residing with him. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Georgetown Dist, SC pg 168 Noah Cribb 000200-20100 Analysis: 2 Male(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Noah CRIBB (1791) s/o John (1761) & Sarah Stephen CRIBB (1796) brother 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Martha — Cribb (1804/05) wife 2 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter? By 1860, Noah and Martha had moved to the Brittons Neck area of Marion Dist, SC, and were listed on the census with Thomas and Sarah Burrows (presumably she was their daughter).

They may have died or moved back to Georgetown. Manuel Cribb was born 3 Jul 1794 (per Prince Frederick Parish records) or 4 Jul 1794 per the Bible records mentioned earlier. Some records give his name as "Emanuel". Manuel seems to have been home with his parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and with them in 1810 (though mis-enumerated as age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I did not find him after 1820. He either died, or left the area. Stephen Cribb was born 15 Oct 1796 per the Bible records mentioned earlier. His birth was not recorded in the Prince Frederick Parish records, so he was probably born in Prince George Parish (records lost). Stephen seems to have been home with his parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and with them in 1810 (though mis-enumerated as age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I did not find Stephen listed on the 1820 census, but someone his age was with his brother Noah Cribb, and that could be him. That person was in the age 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804) which fits. ** Stephen Cribb was listed on the 1830 census index in Georgetown Dist, SC. I don't have the enumerations yet. ** Stephen Cribb was listed on the 1840 census index in Georgetown Dist, SC. I don't have the enumerations yet. ** Stephen Cribb was listed on the 1850 census index in Georgetown Dist, SC. I don't have the enumerations yet. Henry Cribb was born 10 Sep 1799 per the Bible records mentioned earlier. His birth was not recorded in the Prince Frederick Parish records, so he was probably born in Prince George Parish (records lost). Henry seems to have been home with his parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and with them in 1810 (though mis-enumerated as age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I did not find Henry listed on the 1820 census, but someone close to his age was with his brother Eli Cribb, and that could be him. That person was in the age 16-17 age group (born ca 1802/04) which is close, but not a perfect match. ** "Henry F. Cribb" was listed on the 1830 census index in Georgetown Dist, SC. I don't have the enumerations yet. If this is him, then he had a middle initial of "F". ** I didn't find Henry Cribb listed on the 1840 census index. ** Henry Cribb was listed on the 1850 census index in Georgetown Dist, SC. I don't have the enumerations yet. Researcher ListPersons researching this family (click here for data on how to get on or off of this list):
