John Cribb (c1812) and Lydia --- of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 5 times removed to John Cribb. That connection is based on some unproven family links though, so it could be wrong. John Cribb was born ca 1811/12 either in SC or NC. If SC, then probably in Georgetown Dist, SC (or possibly in Marion Dist, SC). If NC, then probably in Columbus County, NC. I'm fairly sure he was a son of Anthony Cribb (1785) and Cortney Runnells, though I don't have direct proof, but the circumstantial evidence seems strong. John was listed next to or within 2 or 3 households of Anthony on the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records. He named one of his daughters "Cortney", seemingly after his mother. Anthony had a son that age per the 1820 census, so he fits also. I'm confidant that this is correct, but some direct evidence would be helpful. Assuming that I am correct, then John does appear to be home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). He was probably still home in 1830 (I don't have those enumerations yet). John Cribb married Lydia --- ca 1832 in Marion Dist, SC. She was born ca 1812/13 in SC, presumably in Marion District. I don't know her maiden name. John Cribb was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC near his father. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 178 John Cribb 0000100000000-2100100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) John CRIBB (1811/12) s/o Anthony & Cortney 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Lydia ___ Cribb (1812/13) wife 1 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Lydia CRIBB (1833/34) daughter 2 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Elizabeth CRIBB (1835/36) daughter Mary CRIBB (1837/38) daughter John Cribb and family were listed in Marion Dist, SC on the 1850 census. He was listed next door to Anthony Cribb who I believe was his father. From what I can tell, they were just within the bounds of Brittons Neck Township, near where Rowell and Legette Township come together. (There were no township divisions at that time though).

They had several grandchildren residing with them, including a Watson, showing that one of John's daughters must have married a Mr. Watson. An Aliphene Sauls age 30 was with them, listed as "Daughter-in-law". I'm not sure how to reconcile that. There were several Sauls listed as "Grandchildren".

I suspect they both died between 1880 and 1900, or possibly moved away. Several of their children were still in Marion, so it seems unlikely that John and Lydia moved away. ChildrenJohn Cribb and Lydia's children are all proven by the 1850-1880 census. They may have had others who were born and died between census years. John C. L. (or T.) Cribb (1853) Lydia Cribb was born ca 1833/34 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. She was apparently home with her parents in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and home with them in 1850 ("Lydia" age 16), but gone before 1860, so probably married or died before then. I have not yet found who she married. Elizabeth J. Cribb was born ca 1835/36 (Apr 1834 per 1900 census) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. She was apparently home with her parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and with them in 1850 ("Elizabeth" age 14). She was gone before 1860, so probably married or died before then. Recently I was informed by Donald W. Turner that Elizabeth, wife of William Turner (son of Stephen Turner) was a Cribb, and after comparing her age and other data, it seems likely that she is this same Elizabeth Cribb. Therefore, I think it is this Elizabeth Cribb who married William Turner ca 1853. William and Elizabeth were listed on the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census in Marion Co, SC, in Legette Township. See the Stephen Turner page for more information on them. Mary Cribb was born ca 1837/38 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. She was apparently home with her parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home for sure in 1850 ("Mary", age 12), but gone before 1860, so probably married or died before then. I don't know who she might have married. Martha Cribb was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. She didn't seem to be home in 1840, so probably not born yet. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Martha", age 10), but gone before 1860, so probably married or died before then. I don't know who she might have married. Caroline Cribb was born June 1844 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Caroline", age 6), 1860 ("Caroline", age 16) and 1870 ("Carolina", age 25). She married John M. Richardson ca 1871/72 in Marion Co, SC. This marriage was given by Sellers, and other records seem to confirm it. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, page 459) John M. Richardson was born Aug 1817 in Marion Dist, SC, son of William G. Richardson. John was married to Mary Drew prior to his marriage to Caroline Cribb. John and Caroline were listed in Brittons Neck Township for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this typed up yet. They were in Brittons Neck for the 1900 census. ** I don't have this typed up yet. Cortney Cribb was born ca 1846/47 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Coatney" age 3) and 1860 ("Cortenay", age 14), but gone before 1870, so probably married or died before then. I found a "Cortney Watson" age 23 in 1870 listed next door to Anthony Cribb. I'm reasonably sure this is the same person. Her husband was Samuel Lewis Watson. He was born ca 1844/45 in NC. I don't know who his parents were, nor what part of North Carolina he was from. They were on the 1870 census next to her grandparents (Anthony and Cortney Cribb). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. Apparently Cortney died before 1880, as she wasn't found in Marion, but an Emma Watson, age 4 was residing with John and Lydia Cribb, listed as "Granddaughter". This doesn't automatically mean Cortney was dead, but since I didn't find her, that is a logical assumption. I did not find Samuel Lewis Watson in 1880 either. John C.L. Cribb was born Mar 1853 (per 1900 census) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Brittons Neck Township. His middle initial(s) are unsure. One record gives "C. L." as two initials, another gives only "T" for middle initial. I don't know which is correct. He was home with his parents in 1860 ("John", age 6), and 1870 ("John C. L.", age 15). John Cribb married Margaret Jane --- before 1878. She was born May 1860 in either SC or NC. I don't know her maiden name. They were listed on the 1880 census in Brittons Neck Township next door to his parents.

She was home with her parents in 1860 ("Milly" age 3) and 1870 ("Willie M." age 13), but gone before 1880, so probably married or died before then.
