Revision History:

·        17 Nov 2008 – Revised and reformatted by Marty Grant, a 4th great grandson.

Cornelius "Neal" Davis was born ca 1804/1805 in NC, presumably in the area near the present community of Delco, in Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC. This area was part of Brunswick County (and North West Township) prior to 1877. I don't know who Neal's parents are yet. I haven't found any records associating him with any other Davis families.

I've attempted to use the early census records to possibly identify his parents, but this has not proven too helpful. The 1810 census (Brunswick Co, NC) shows several Davis families with sons "under 10" (born ca 1800/1810) including William Davis, Bartholomew Davis, John Davis, and J. B. Davis. One of these four men could be Neal's father. Another household, Richard Davis contained no detail, as his family was listed in the "Other" column (for Free Colored). He is also a possibility for the 1840 census record showed Cornelius in the "free colored" columns as well.

On 7 Jan 1815 Jonah Keith of Brunswick Co, NC sold 34 acres of land to "Neale Davis" for $17. This was land on Livingstone Creek. Witnesses included Solomon Taylor Sr and Solomon Taylor. The deed was proven in Brunswick County Court on 27 Jan 1818 by the oath of Solomon Taylor, one of the witnesses. Since Neal was only 10 years old at this point, this seriously implies some kind of relationship between Jonah Keith and Neal Davis, except for the fact that it wasn't a deed of gift. There was no minimum age to be given or sold land, however, a 10 year old couldn't incur a debt, so someone else had to pay for this land.  (Brunswick Co, NC Deed Book H page 6)

I though that perhaps the above deed was for another Neal Davis, considering his age at that time (10 years old), but my Neal Davis had this same land in later years, and sold it to his granddaughter in 1880, so there seems little doubt he is the same person. It was perfectly legal to sell or give land to a minor, but a minor couldn't sell land. I found "J. Keith" and "S. Taylor" next to each other on the 1810 Brunswick County census. Solomon was born before 1765, and Jonah born ca 1765/84 per their ages on the 1810 census. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but J. Keith was next to J. Truman (or Freeman) and J. Grant households, both of whom were all listed in the "Free colored" columns. There were also some Jacobs families nearby who were also Free Colored. I mention this since Neal Davis was listed as Free colored on the 1840 census (and that was the only record showing him that way, all others showed him as white).  D. B. Davis was just a few houses from the Keiths and Taylors in 1810. This is probably Dunbar Davis. "B. Davis" was also listed nearby. Dunbar had no apparent sons Neals age, but "B. Davis" had 2 sons under 10 (born 1800/10). "B" is probably Bartholomew Davis (1765/75).

The 1820 census did not show Neal Davis as a head of household, though he was landowner at this time, he was still a minor (and only about 15 years old) so he must have been with his parents or other relatives. In 1820 there were two Davis households that had someone about his age residing with them: Bartholomew Davis (1765/75), and William B. Davis (just as in 1810). I don't know if either of these are likely candidates or not, though I'd favor Bartholomew since he was near Jonah Keith and Solomon Taylor in 1810 who we know are associated with Neal Davis.

By the time of the 1830 census, Neal Davis was about 25 years old, and certainly old enough to be on his own, though he was not listed as a head of household, so he must have been with his parents or other relatives at this time. As in previous census years, there were a few Davis households in Brunswick County that had someone the right age with them, including: Thomas Davis (c1776) (free colored household, but someone Neal's age was there), Bartholomew Davis (just as in 1810 and 1820), and Richard Davis (free colored, but someone close to Neal's age was there).

Neal Davis married Tabitha --- ca 1832 in Brunswick Co, NC. Her maiden name isn't known, but I suspect it may be Wallace based on some highly speculative circumstantial evidence. On the 1860 census, Tabitha was listed as being born in "SC". The very next household to them was that of Henry Wallace, just slightly younger than Tabitha, and also born in SC. No one else near there was born in SC. Backing up to 1850, Henry Wallace was just four houses away from the Neal Davis family. Like I mentioned, this is very circumstantial, but it is the only real clue I have so far.

Neal Davis was listed as a head of household on the 1840 census in Brunswick Co, NC. Interestingly, his household was enumerated in the "Free Colored" columns. This means the census taker thought the family was of mixed blood, either part Black (African) or Indian or some other "non-white" ethnic origin. In the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records, his family was always listed as "White", see my Ethnic Origins pages for more information on this subject.

Neal Davis being shown in the Free Colored columns makes me wonder if he was somehow connected to the Thomas Davis or Richard Davis family, both of whom were always in the Free Colored columns. There are two possibilities, one, Neal Davis and family were mistakenly listed as "free colored" in 1840 (which works considering they were "White" in 1850 through 1880), or two, they (or at least he) had some mixed blood, either Black or Indian (or something else). At this point I don't have enough information to draw any conclusions. Neal's 1840 census entry put him on a page that was mostly "free colored" listings. I don't know if this means they all lived in the same area, or if the census taker grouped them all together on purpose. However, I don't think the census taker changed anything, it looks like the names are in neighborhood order, so those listed may all be neighbors to the Davis family. The Jacobs and Freeman families were nearby (who were also neighbors to Bartholomew Davis in previous census years). Neal's next door neighbors in 1840 were James Smith and Archy Freeman (both listed as "Free Colored").

Neal Davis and family were listed on the 1850 census in Brunswick Co, NC in Northwest District. They were listed as "White" in this census (and all later census records). Junius Davis was the only other Davis household in that district, but he wasn't listed nearby. Neal was four houses from Henry Wallace, possible brother-in-law. Neal's next door neighbors were John Wells and Henry Jacobs (who was listed as "Mulatto").

Neal Davis and family were listed on the 1860 census in Brunswick Co, NC in Northwest District. They were listed as "White" in this census. Again, Junius Davis was the only other Davis household in that district, but he wasn't listed nearby. Their "next door" neighbors were the Edward Bowen family and the Henry Wallace family.

Tabitha (---) Davis must have died during the 1860's, for she was not with Cornelius for the 1870 census.

Someone was with Cornelius on the 1870 census named “Malinda” who could be a second wife, or it could be his daughter Mahala miswritten.  The 1870 census is the worst for accuracy throughout North Carolina and South Carolina.

In 1877, part of Northwest Township of Brunswick County, including the Livingston Creek area (and what is known today as the Delco community) was given up by Brunswick County, NC and ceded to Columbus County, and became Ransom Township in Columbus County. This included the area where Cornelius Davis lived.

On 1 Nov 1877 Cornelius Davis sold land on John's Branch to Franklin M. Carroll. I haven't figured out where he got this land yet. Witness was D.J. Daniel. (Columbus Co, NC Deed Book N2 page 483).

Cornelius and his daughter Mahala and her children were listed in Ransom Township in Columbus Co, NC for the 1880 census. They were the only Davis family in that Township. They were listed between the households of J. B. Wilkins and Frank Carroll.

On 24 Jul 1880 (this year is probably off slightly) Cornelius Davis sold his 34 acres on Livingston Creek to Mary C. Watson (his granddaughter). The deed was witnessed by M. J. Russell and F. P. Bordeauex and was recorded 3 Mar 1905 (many years after the fact). The trouble with the date of the deed is that Mary C. Davis didn't marry William H. Watson until 1882.

The 1880 census and the 1880 deed is the last record I have for Cornelius Davis. I don't know when he died, but it was prior to 1900. I assume that he and his wife Tabitha are buried somewhere in the Delco, NC area (Columbus County). They could be buried at Piney Grove, but that is just a guess.

Piney Grove Avent Christian Church is at the corner of Piney Grove Road (SR 1834) and Livingston Chapel Road (SR 1843). Here are some links to help locate the church via maps:

Unknown Daughter born ca 1830/1840. She was with the family on the 1840 census, but gone by 1850, so probably had married or died by then.
Robert Davis was born ca 1833/34 per his age on the 1850 census. He was born in Brunswick (now Columbus) Co., NC. He seems to be with his parents in 1840 age under 10 (1830/40). He was home in 1850 (“Robert” age 16). He was gone by 1860.

I searched for Robert Davis on the 1860 census and didn’t find him in Brunswick Co., NC or nearby. I found a probable match in Chesterfield Dist., SC. I’m almost certain it is him, but not 100% sure. He was the right age and had the right birth place, and he was next door to William Davis, who is a perfect fit for his brother. Furthermore, William named a son “Manley” which is one of his brothers names. And finally, their brother Leonard Davis did indeed move to this same county according to one of his descendants Mrs. Aubrey Jones. All that information combines to make it clear that it is the same Robert Davis, but with a little room for doubt.

The 1860 census shows that Robert had married Elizabeth (---) there in the 1850’s. They are on the 1860 census in Chesterfield Dist., SC, no township listed, post office is Cheraw, SC: Robt Davis, 30 Turpentine Farmer, born NC; Elizabeth 24 SC; Rachel 3/12 SC. As I noted above, brother William Davis was next door.

I found Civil War Confederate service records for several men named Robert Davis in South Carolina. I wasn’t able to determine which of them was the same Robert.

I was unable to find Robert Davis on the 1870 census. I did find a widow “E. Davis” in Chesterfield who could be Robert’s wife Elizabeth, but unfortunately the census taker used initials instead of names: Court House Township, Chesterfield CH Post Office: E. Davis, 35 Keeps House $200/100 SC; J.? Davis, 8 male, S. J. Davis, 6 female.

If that is Robert’s wife Elizabeth then perhaps he died during the Civil War (1861-1865). The youngest child was born ca 1864, so that fits.

I wasn’t able to find Robert Davis on the 1880 census. I wasn’t able to find the “E. Davis” from 1870 Chesterfield in that county in 1880 either. There was another widow Elizabeth Davis listed there in 1880, but the children don’t match up with those from 1870, so it is probably a different person.

William L. Davis was born ca 1835/36 per his age on the 1850 census. He was born in Brunswick (now Columbus) Co., NC. He seems to be with his parents in 1840 age under 10 (1830/40). He was home in 1850 (“William” age 14). He was gone by 1860.

He wasn’t in Brunswick Co., NC for the 1860 census. While searching for his brother Robert, I found them both (I think) in Chesterfield Dist, SC, living side by side. I’m not 100% positive it is them, but it fits pretty well. By this time William is married Catherine (---), and has one child named Manley, presumably after his own brother of that name. No township is listed, but their post office is Cheraw, SC: Wm Davis 25 Turpentine Farmer, $337/50, born NC; Catherine 20 SC; Manley 2.

Civil War Records show that William L. Davis served in Kelly's Company, South Carolina Light Artillery (Chesterfield Artillery) as a Private. His brother Leonard Davis also served in the same unit.

I wasn’t able to find William or wife or son on the 1870 census anywhere, though they should have been in SC still.

They were in Duval Co., FL for the 1880 census in Mayport Township, or at least I think it is them, it fits really well: William L. Davis, 46, Fisherman, NC-NC-NC; Catharine wife 36 SC-SC-SC; Amander Davis, son 22 SC-NC-SC; Robert son 14; Lucy Ann dau 11; Willie son 8, FL-NC-SC; Jimmie son 6; Gussie son 5/12.

William L. Davis died between 1880 and 1900 in Duval Co., FL.

I found his widow Catherine still in Duval for the 1900 census, they were in the city of Jacksonville: 212 Church Street East: James Davis, head, Jun 1874, 25 single, born FL-NC-SC, Engineer; Cathern, mother, Mar 1837, 63, widowed, 7 children born, 7 living; SC-SC-SC; Gus, brother, Jan 1880 20, single, FL-NC-SC, plummer (Plumber).

I found Catherine on the 1910 census still in Jacksonville at 1122 Dudley? Street: Katharine Davis, Head, 71 widowed, SC-SC-SC; Willie, grandson 22 FL-FL-FL, Machinist; Mabel, granddaughter 18.

I didn’t find Catherine on the 1920 census, she may have died before then.

Mary Davis was born ca 1837/38 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). She was home with her parents for the 1840 census apparently, aged under 10 (1830/40) and with them for the 1850 census (“Mary” age 12), and still home in 1860 (“Mary” age 28). She was gone by 1870, unless she was the "Malinda Davis" age 30 living with Cornelius Davis, which could be her, but perhaps not.

I don’t know what became of her after 1860.

Leonard Davis was born ca 1838/39 per his age on the 1850 census. He was born in Brunswick (now Columbus) Co., NC, presumably in the Delco area. He was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census age under 10 (1830/40), and was home with them in 1850 (“Leonard” age 11), but gone by 1860.

I looked for Leonard on the 1860 census but didn’t find him anywhere.

Mrs. Aubrey Jones informed me that Leonard moved to Chesterfield Co., SC in time for the Civil War.

Civil War Records show that Leonard Davis served in Kelly's Company, South Carolina Light Artillery (Chesterfield Artillery) as a Private. His brother William L. Davis also served in the same unit.

I wasn’t able to find Leonard on the 1870 census. This census is the worst one ever for problems. Added to the general inaccuracy of the 1870 census, the census taker in Chesterfield only listed people by their initials and not their given names.

I did find him in Chesterfield on the 1880 census in Cheraw Township: Leanard Davis 44, farmer, born NC-NC-NC; Sarah 50 wife, born SC-SC-SC; Massie 11 daughter, SC-NC-SC.

I found Leonard on the 1900 census in Chesterfield Co., SC in Cheraw Township with a new wife: Linnard Davis, Head, born Un 1832, 68, married 16 years, born NC-NC-NC, Farmer; Martha E. wife Mar 1850, 50, married 16, 2 children born 2 living NC-NC-NC; Thomas F. son Sep 1885 14; Bessie V. dau Mar 1893, 7.

I found them on the 1910 census in Chesterfield in Court House Township: Lenard Davis, head 73, married twice, 23 years, born SC-NC-NC, farmer; Martha wife 50, married once, 2 children born, 2 living, SC-SC-SC; Frank son 22; Victory dau 14.

I couldn’t find Leonard or his wife or kids on the 1920 census.

Sarah Davis was born ca 1840/41 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census (“Sarah” age 9) and with them for the 1860 census (“Sarah” age 26).

I don’t know what happened to her after 1860.

Luke Davis was born ca 1841/42 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census (“Luke” age 8) and with them in 1860 (“Luke” age 21). He wasn’t with them in 1870 or elsewhere as far as I could find.

He served in the Civil War in Capt David Patterson’s Artillery Company (Clarendon Guards) as a Private. His enlistment records showed he was born in Wilmington, NC, which probably isn’t correct, but could be. His last record was a hospital record showing him with Gonorrhea. Perhaps he died from it, for I couldn’t find anything on him after that.

Johanna Davis was born ca 1843/44 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census (“Johanna” age 6) and the 1860 census (“Joanna” age 16), but gone by 1870, so probably had married or died before then.

I don’t know what became of her after 1860.

Mahala Davis was born ca 1844/45 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). Mahala is my ancestor. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census (“Mahaly” age 5) and with them in 1860 (“Mehala” age 18).

Mahala had a child out of wedlock, born August 1866 (Mary Catherine Davis, my ancestor who married William H. Watson). She had to obtain a Bastardy Bond in November 1866, and the Bondsmen included Mahala herself, W.R. Skipper, and William Smith Jr. Though the bond doesn't give that information, either Skipper or Smith could be the father.

I did not find Mahala Davis listed on the 1870 census, but by 1880 she was living with her father in Columbus Co, NC. She was single (“Mahaly” age 30).

I didn’t find her on the 1900 census. She may have been dead by then, or perhaps married to someone unknown.

Elvy Davis was born ca 1846/47 per her age on the 1850 census. She was with her parents on that census (“Elvy” age 3). She wasn’t with them in 1860. She may have died by then. I have no further record of her.
Cornelius Davis was born ca 1847/48 per the 1850 census. For that census he was with his parents (“Cornelius” age 2) and still home in 1860 (“Cornelius” age 12). He wasn’t with his parents in 1870, nor found elsewhere that year.

I have no further record of him. I tried to find him in 1870 and 1880 with no luck. I found a possible match in 1900 in Miller Co., GA, though I don’t know if it is him or not: May Haw Militia Dist 1160: Cornealius Davis, Head, Aug 1846, 63 married 30 years, born NC-NC-NC, Day Laborer; Elisabeth, wife Mar 1853, 47 3 children born, 3 living, SC-SC-SC; James R. son Feb 1872, 28.

I backtracked and found that same Cornelius on the 1880 census in Richland Co., SC in Center Township: Niel Davis, 28, farm laborer, SC-SC-SC; Elizabeth 27 wife; Jas R. 8 son; Mary C. 6 daughter; Bythe A. 5 daughter. They are next door to a William D. Davis (1835 SC) and family.

I don’t know if Cornelius Davis of 1880 Richland Co., SC and 1900 Miller Co., GA is the same Cornelius as ours, but he does fit age-wise, and has the right birth place if you count the 1900 census information and not the 1880 census data.  The William D. Davis of 1880 isn’t part of my family as far as I can tell.

I tried to find Cornelius of Richland Co., SC on the 1910, 1870 and 1860 census, but wasn’t able to locate him.

Armilin Davis was born ca 1849 in Brunswick (now Columbus) Co., NC. He was with his parents for the 1850 census (“Armilin” age 8 months) and with them in 1860 (“Armolin” age 9) and still home in 1870 (“Armand” age 15).

I didn’t find him on the 1880 or 1900 census anywhere.

Manley Davis was born ca 1854/55 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). He was home with his parents for the 1860 census (“Manly” age 5). In 1870 he wasn’t home unless he was the person listed as “Waddell Davis” age 14. I think that is probably him.

I wasn’t able to find him on the 1880 or 1900 census anywhere.

Daugherty Davis was born ca 1856/57 in Brunswick (now Columbus) Co., NC. He was with his parents in 1860 (“Daugherty” age 3), but not with them in 1870.

I wasn’t able to find him in 1870, 1880 or 1900 censuses.

Tabitha Davis was born ca 1858/59 per her age on the 1880 census. Since I couldn’t find her in 1860 or 1870 I’m not sure if that birth date is accurate. She was not with her parents in 1860 or 1870. In the 1880 census she was with Cornelius and listed as his daughter “Tabitha” age 21, single.

It is possible that her age is off just a little.

I found a marriage record in Columbus for “Tabitha Davis” and “F. P. Bordeaux, dated 22 Jan 1888. I bet this is her because the Bordeaux family lived near Cornelius Davis.

Backing up to 1880 I only found one person who could be F. P. Bordeaux and that is Frank Bordeaux (c1853) who just happened to be just four houses from the Davis family. In 1880 he was married to Mary E.(---) (c1857) and had three children: Benjamin F. (c1875) Martha E. (c1878) and Pierce (c1879).

I wasn’t able to find F. P. Bordeaux on the 1900 census in Columbus Co., NC. I found his son Benjamin still in Columbus living with another family as a boarder.

Thomas M. Davis was born ca 1869/70 in Brunswick Co, NC, presumably in the Delco area (now Ransom Township, Columbus Co, NC). He is probably not a son of Cornelius although he is listed as one on the 1880 census. If so, he must be from a second marriage. On the other hand he is probably a grandson instead.

He was not with the family in 1870, but he was with them in 1880 “Thos M.” age 10.

I didn’t find him on the 1900 census.
