Andrew Davis (1780/90) and Elizabeth Houston, and Nancy Roberts of Iredell, Burke and Yancey Co, NC and Cocke Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to Andrew Davis as far as I know. Andrew Davis was born ca 1780/90 (per the 1830 and 1840 census), probably in Iredell County, NC. However, Iredell was created from Rowan County in 1788, so if born before 1788, he was technically born in Rowan Co, NC (now Iredell Co, NC). The earlier census records for Andrew (1810 and 1820) give his age much older than what he was listed as in 1830 and 1840, which makes me wonder if I've made a mistake in identifying him properly. When Andrew first appeared in Burke Co, NC in 1830, he was age 40-49, or born ca 1780/90. His next census, 1840 (Cocke Co, TN) he was age 50-59, born ca 1780/90, which is in perfect agreement with the 1830 census. However, we know from other records that several of his oldest children were born in Iredell Co, NC, so we know he came from there before moving to Burke / Yancey Co, NC. The trouble is, that in 1820 and 1810 there was an Andrew Davis there, and while his children's ages seem to match up, his own age does not. This is a common census problem, so not always a sign of a mix up on my part, but with two census in a row (1810, 1820) not agreeing with later records, it causes me concern. So consider the fact that the records in Iredell may either be in error, or may be for a totally different Andrew Davis. As previously mentioned, Andrew Davis was born ca 1780/90 in Iredell Co, NC or Rowan Co, NC before Iredell was created in 1788. I don't know who his parents were, but there are several suspects. First of all, we don't know that Andrew was actually born in that county, but if he was, he was probably home with his parents for the 1790 and 1800 census. In 1790 there were only four Davis families in Iredell, and all four had apparent sons in the "under 16" column, (born ca 1774/1790), which is where Andrew would have fit. So that makes Patrick, James, Joshua and Solomon Davis all suspects. It should be noted that (as far as I've found), Andrew did not name any of his own sons any of those names. In 1800 there were nine Davis families in Iredell County, including some with large families, who weren't there in 1790, so probably had moved in from somewhere else. Depending on Andrew's exact birth date, he would either be in the age 16-25 category (born ca 1774/84), or the 10-15 (ca 1784/90) group. Several Davis households in 1800 had sons in these groups, including: Joshua Davis with one son 10-15 (c1784/90), James Davis with two sons 10-15 (c1784/90), Solomon Davis with one of each, 16-25 (1774/84) and 10-15 (1784/90), and lastly Uriah Davis with one 16-25 (1774/84) and two 10-15 (1784/90). Based only on the census, I can't say with any certainty if any of these were Andrew's father. Andrew Davis married Elizabeth Houston in the 1800/1807 timeframe, presumably in Iredell County. For years we did not know her given name, only that his wife was a "Miss Houston" (as proven by a Civil War Pension application of a grandchild), until making contact (in 2002) with Marian Murphy who had the death record of daughter Delpha Davis Buchanan showing parents as "Andrew and Elizbaeth". I had already figured that Delpha was their daughter, but this record proved it, and also gave Miss Houston's given name. I did not find a marriage record for Andrew and Elizbaeth. Their oldest proven child was born in 1807, so they married prior to that year. Census records seem to show Elizabeth Houston was born ca 1784/94, probably in Iredell County. Regarding the Houston family, I found that in 1800, there were five Houston households in Iredell County, including: Christopher (bef 1755), James (1774/84), James (1755/74), James (bef 1755), and Samuel Houston (bef 1755). Three of these (except James-1774/84 and James-1755/74) had daughters roughly the age of Elizabeth Houston who married Andrew Davis. That means Christopher, James (bef 1755) and Samuel are prime suspects for her father. There was a David Houston (1755/74) already in Burke Co, NC by 1800. He might be connected with the Iredell family, but I don't know if that is the case or not. In 1810, there were two Andrew Davis' listed in Iredell County, NC (also listed was Solomon, Thomas and Uriah Davis, none close to either Andrew). The two Andrew's were not on the same page. The first one seems to be the one under study here, because the children's ages are a good match, but neither he nor the other Andrew seem to be in the right age groups. The second Andrew (on census page 165 or 248) was in the 45 and up age group (born before 1765), as was his apparent wife, and they had two apparent children, a son and daughter, both in the 10-15 (1794/1800) age group. This does not fit at all with the Andrew Davis and Miss Houston family. The other Andrew in 1810, on page 159 (or 245, depending on "which" page number you use), is a much better fit, though there are some interesting aspects of his record as well. First the strong stuff, he was on the same page with Samuel Houston. I don't have the actual census available to check and see how close together they were, but being on the same page is good. That might make Samuel the prime suspect for Elizabeth Houston's father, depending on additional evidence. Andrew's household contained a male and female both age 45 and up (born before 1765), which at a glance would seem to be Andrew, but there are also males and females born in the 1780's in the household, which makes me think that this is indeed our Andrew born ca 1780/90, but that he had his parents or other older relatives residing with him. It isn't always true that the head of household is the oldest person in the household (though that is often the case). Since there were two males in two different age groups born in the 1780's, I'm not sure which was Andrew, whether in the 1765/84 group, or the 1784/94 group, but for the sake of guessing, I put him in the older one, which if true, narrows his birth year down to ca 1780/84, but since I can't be sure which one was him, I'm leaving it as ca 1780/90 in my records. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Iredell Co, NC pg 159 / 245 Andrew Davis 10111-10201 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 and up (bef 1765) Father? This time he was listed on the same page with a Samuel Davis (bef 1775) and William Davis (1775/94), possibly relatives. Once again, Andrew's children line up fairly well, but Andrew himself seems to be "too old" in this census. There also seems to be an "extra" son and daughter with Andrew in 1820, of course those could be a niece and nephew, or boarders of some sort. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Iredell Co, NC pg 238 Andrew Davis 020001-31110 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1775) Andrew DAVIS (1780/90) 2 Male(s) 10-15 (1804-1810) William DAVIS (1809) son Son? They ended up next to or very near to the William Davis Sr family, but it does not seem that they were related. Descendants claim they were not related. Andrew Davis' wife, Elizabeth Houston Davis, died sometime between 1824 and 1829, though I don't know if she died in Iredell, or after the move to Burke. Andrew Davis obtained a marriage bond in Burke County, NC on 25 Mar 1829 to marry Nancy Roberts. Aden Carver was the bondsman. Nancy was born ca 1800/10. I have no clue who her parents were, as the Roberts family was quite numerous in the area. Andrew Davis was listed on the 1830 census in Burke County, NC. He was clearly in or very near the Three Mile Creek area. His neighbors on either side were John Winters, and John Jones. He was just a few houses from Aden Carver Sr (the bondsman for his 1829 marriage), and Wilson Gilbert. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Burke County, NC pg 194 Andrew Davis 1310201000000-0011200000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1780-1790) Andrew DAVIS (1780/90) 2 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) William DAVIS (1809) son –> m 1832 Son? Sometime between ca 1834 and ca 1836, Andrew Davis moved his family to Cocke Co, TN. Several of his married children remained in Yancey Co, NC, and some of his older unmarried children seemed to remain behind as well (or else returned later). Andrew Davis was listed on the 1840 census in Cocke Co, TN. His unmarried older children all seem to not be home with Andrew in 1840, but it looks to me like they were all living in Yancey Co, NC with their married brother William Davis in 1840. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Cocke County, TN pg 33 Andrew Davis 1012000100000-1100010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1780-1790) Andrew DAVIS (1780/90) 2 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825) Son? The 1850 census shows most of their unmarried children residing together with their older brother Thomas W. Davis, in Cocke Co, TN, thus suggesting that the parents were deceased. David Roberts, age 20 (c1829/30) was with them, probably a relative of their mother Nancy Roberts. I found that a "Nancy Davis" was listed on the 1850 Mortality Schedule as dying in Cocke Co, TN in December (1849) at age 45. It showed her a widow, born in NC, and dying of "Pleurasy". I can't be totally sure this is Nancy Roberts Davis, but it seems likely that it is.

ChildrenAndrew Davis and Elizabeth Houston had several children per the 1810-1830 census records, and Andrew and Nancy Roberts had several as well. Some of these listed below are unproven, but all fit very well based on circumstantial evidence, and I'm reasonably confidant in this list. Delpha Davis was born 12 Sep 1807 (based on her age given on her death record), presumably in Iredell Co, NC. I originally placed Delpha in this family due to strong circumstantial evidence, but now her connection is proven; for descendant Marian Murphy has shown me Delpha's death record (1853 Russell Co, VA) giving her parents as "Andrew and Elizabeth Davis". She was apparently home with her parents for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census. On 14 Sep 1831, John Buchanan (spelled "Buckanan") obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry "Delpha Davis". The bondsman were Lewis Vance and William Davis, both of whom are part of the Andrew Davis family. (This was part of the strong circumstantial evidence I was using to place Delpha in the Andrew Davis family). There were several John Buchanan's in old Burke and Yancey Co, NC. Marian Murphy has helped clear up which one is our John, for according to her (and confirmed by the 1850 census), this John is John V. Buchanan. John V. Buchanan is listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County, and he was in the right neighborhood. He and his wife were both born ca 1800/10, and they had two sons age 5-9 (ca 1830/35), and 1 daughter under 5 (ca 1835/40), so all fits. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. John and Delpha left Yancey County ca 1849 or thereabouts, and moved to nearby Russell County, Virginia (thanks to Marian Murphy for pointing this out). The 1850 census shows John and Delpha and family in Russell County, Virginia. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet, but here is what was included: John V. Buchanan, age 45?, born NC; Delphia, 42; James L., 18; Milus A., 15; Francis M. 11; Nancy E. 9; William D., 6;, George W., 4; (all of the previous born in NC); and Jasper N. Buchanan, age 1 month, born Russell Co, VA. (1850 Census, Russell Co, VA, Household # 1397). Delpha Davis Buchanan died on 25 Jan 1853 in Russell Co, VA. Her death record reveals no cause of death, but gives her name and that her parents were Andrew and Elizabeth Davis, and that she was wife of John V. Buchanan. (Thanks to Marian Murphy for sharing this data). According to Marian's research, John V. Buchanan was listed in Wise County, Virginia for the 1860 and 1870 census. Unknown Son (c1804/10). Andrew Davis had an apparent son this age with him in 1820 and 1830. In those two census years, Andrew had two sons in that group, one being this mystery son, and the other being William Davis born 1809. However, in the 1810 census, Andrew only had one child in that age group (under 10, born ca 1800/10). That may mean that this son was born in the year 1810, so not present for the 1810 census, but born shortly after the census taker came around. I don't have any clues who this son might be. He was home with his parents in 1820 and 1830, but no longer with them in 1840, so probably married, or dead by then. There was a John Davis born ca 1808 in Yancey Co, NC in 1840 and 1850 who might be this same person, but it seems unlikely since Andrew named one of his younger sons "John". This son, apparently did not remain in Yancey County when his parents moved to Cocke Co, TN, but perhaps he went there with them (though was not home with Andrew for the 1840 census). William Davis was born 18 Jun 1809 (per his Family Bible) in Iredell Co, NC (per 1860 census record). I have found no direct proof that he is a child of Andrew Davis, but plenty of circumstantial evidence to support it. William Davis married Rachel Davis on 8 Apr 1832 in Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC. She was a daughter of William Davis and Frances Carpenter, and (as far as we can find) not related to William. See his own page for more information on them. Isabell Davis was born ca 1814/15 (per 1850 census) or ca 1811/12 (per 1860 census, presumably in Iredell Co, NC. I've found no direct evidence that Isabell was a child of Andrew Davis, but the circumstantial evidence is strong. She and her husband Lewis Vance were associated with all (or most) of the other children of Andrew Davis. Some researcher list Isabell as a daughter of my ancestor William Davis, but that is incorrect (more on this below). Isabell was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census in Iredell Co, NC. She moved to Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC with them in the mid 1820's. On 25 Mar 1828 Lewis Vance obtained a marriage bond in Burke Co, NC to marry "Issabel Davis". Adin Carver was bondsman (same person who was bondsman for Andrew Davis Sr when he married Nancy Roberts in 1829). Lewis Vance was born ca 1802/03 in either SC (per 1850 and 1860 census) or NC (per 1870 census). Somewhere I found (or was given) information that he was born in Greenville District, South Carolina. Since I can't find a source for that, I'm leaving it as a "maybe" at this point. Other researchers have listed Lewis Vance as a son of Matthew Vance (1760/70) and Barbara McVeigh, but I don't know what the proof for that is. He is therefore (if a son of Matthew) a brother to John Vance who married Elizabeth Davis, daughter of William Davis Sr. This fact, I believe has caused some to conclude (incorrectly) that Isabell Davis was also a daughter of William Davis Sr, and some early Davis research reflects that belief, but it is clearly incorrect. Lewis Vance was listed on the 1830 census in Burke Co, NC just 13 houses from Andrew Davis. He was listed in close proximity to other Three Mile Creek residents also, such as my ancestors Thomas Grant, Jacob Davis and David Carpenter, all within a few houses of Lewis. Lewis Vance's neighbors on either side were James Wilson and Joseph Pyatt. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Burke County, NC pg 195 Lewice Vance 1000100000000-0000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Lewis VANCE (1802/03) 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) William VANCE (1829/30) son 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Isabell DAVIS Vance (1814/15) wife Isabell's father and many of her younger siblings all left the area for Cocke Co, TN during the 1830's, but she and Lewis remained in Yancey Co, NC. On 14 Sep 1831, Lewis Vance and brother-in-law William Davis signed as bondsmen for the marriage of Delpha Davis to John Buchanan in Burke Co, NC. This document is more circumstantial evidence they were all of the same family. Yancey County was formed in 1833 from part of Burke, including the area where the Vance family resided. Lewis Vance received a State Land Grant for 50 acres on 17 Dec 1836, for land he entered on 12 Jan 1834. The land was in Yancey County on the east side of Buck Ridge on Middle Ridge Knox on waters of George Creek. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 167 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985). Lewis Vance was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC in the same general area as before. He was just a couple of houses still from my ancestor David Carpenter, and Lewis Vance's neighbors on either side were Mathias Dillinger and Arthur Erwin. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Yancey County, NC pg 268 Lewis Vance 1200010000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Lewis VANCE (1802/03) 2 Male(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) William VANCE (1829/30) son Thomas D. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6, August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter) Lewis and Isabell and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. They were listed between the families of James Gaddy and Leonard M. Gurley. Their oldest son William Vance was residing with his Uncle William Davis in 1850.

Isabell died before January of 1870, for Lewis Vance married Nancy E. Crisp in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC on 11 Jan 1870. Nancy was both a Crisp by birth, and by marriage, as she was a daughter of William Crisp, and a widow of Miller Crisp. Lewis and Nancy were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC in Stecoah Township, with her Crisp children residing with them. Lewis' daughter Mary Vance was a few houses away with Stephen Cody and Elizabeth Davis Cody (Mary's Aunt). Lewis and Nancy were next door to Amanda Dean and her children.

I have Nancy Crisp Vance's death date as of 1900/1910 in Graham Co, NC. No burial information for either one. Most of Lewis Vance and Isabell Davis' children remained in the Yancey / Mitchell County area and did not go to Graham County, (except daughter Mary Susan Vance who went, married, and died there). It does not appear that Lewis Vance and Nancy E. Crisp had any children together. Caroline Davis was born ca 1814/15 (per 1850 census) or ca 1817/18 (per 1870 census). She was born in North Carolina, presumably in Iredell County. I've found no direct evidence that Caroline was a child of Andrew Davis, but the circumstantial evidence is strong. She and her husband Godfrey Cody were associated with all (or most) of the other children of Andrew Davis. Caroline was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census in Iredell Co, NC. She moved to Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC with them in the mid 1820's, and was apparently listed with them there in 1830. In 1833, Yancey County was formed from the section of Burke where they lived. Sometime ca 1830/1835, Caroline Davis married Godfrey Cody in Burke or Yancey Co, NC. Godfrey's family was from neighboring Buncombe County in the area that bordered Yancey and was later cut off to form Madison County (in 1851). Godfrey was born ca 1807/08 in NC. Other researchers show that Godfrey Cody was a son of Stephen and Nancy Cody. I don't know what evidence there is for that. After marriage, they moved back to Godfrey's home area in Buncombe County (now Madison County). They must have also moved to Cocke Co, TN temporarily, for Godfrey Cody and Stephen Cody were listed on the 1839 Tax list in District 7 of Cocke County, they both were taxed for 1 poll each, and no land. (Complete tax list online on the Cocke Co, TN USGenWeb page) Godfrey Cody was listed on the 1840 census in Buncombe County. They seem to be in the part of Buncombe that later became Madison County. Their neighbors on either side were Stephen Redmon and Henry Ragle. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Buncombe County, NC pg 182 Godfrey Cody 3000100000000-0000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Godfrey CODY (1807/08) 3 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Tilman CODY (1834/35) son William CODY (1835/36) son John A. They apparently moved there between ca 1844 and 1846. Godfrey's brother Stephen (married to Elizabeth Davis) also moved there, and might have gone before them by a year or so. One of Godfrey and Caroline's sons (John) was born in TN in 1840, so that apparently shows they visited there before moving there. Godfrey Cody and Caroline and their children were listed on the 1850 census in Cocke Co, TN. There were several other Cody's there in 1850 as well, all probably related to Godfrey. There was a Betsy Cody age 35, living with an 81 year old Ms. Sims (couldn't make out her first name, perhaps "Joanna"), just two houses from Godfrey. Perhaps she (Betsy) is a sister of Godfrey. Godfrey and Caroline's neighbors on either side were the families of Elliot Sims, and John Allen 2nd.

Their son John Cody was already in Cherokee Co, NC by 1860, and residing with his uncle William Davis. Godfrey and Caroline and son Andrew were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC. All their other children were no longer at home. They were listed next door to their married son John Cody, and next door on the other side to Edward Schehan. John Cody, age 52 (c1817/18) was just a few houses away, and could be a brother to Godfrey.

Caroline Davis Cody died ca 1878 in Graham County. I have in my records that she died "circa 29 Aug 1878", but I don't have a source attached to that date. I may have gotten it from Ralph Cody, or perhaps another researcher. I did not find Godfrey Cody on the 1880 census in Graham County, NC. I have a death date of 24 Apr 1896 for him, from the William Davis family bible. It is possible that this date refers to a different Godfrey Cody, but I don't know for sure. If that is his death date, then I don't know where he died, if in Graham County, or elsewhere. Neither Godfrey nor Caroline are listed in the Graham County cemetery records, so I don't know where they were buried. Elizabeth Davis was born ca 1817/18 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Iredell Co, NC (proven by 1860 census). I've found no direct evidence that Elizabeth was a child of Andrew Davis, but the circumstantial evidence is strong. She and her husband Stephen Cody were associated with all (or most) of the other children of Andrew Davis. Elizabeth was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census in Iredell Co, NC. Other researchers show him a son of Stephen and Nancy Cody of the same area, and therefore a brother to Godfrey Cody who married Caroline Davis. After marriage, they apparently moved back to Stephen's home area in what is now Madison Co, NC. They must have also moved to Cocke Co, TN temporarily, for Godfrey Cody and Stephen Cody were listed on the 1839 Tax list in District 7 of Cocke County, they both were taxed for 1 poll each, and no land. Since his father Andrew married a 2nd time in March 1829, it may be that Thomas is from the first marriage, or from the second, but since I don't know his exact birth date, I can't say for sure. Thomas was apparently home with Andrew Davis in 1830 and 1840 census. In 1850, Thomas was listed as head of household in Cocke Co, TN with all his younger siblings residing with him.
