John Davis (c1808) and Cynthia --- of Yancey Co, NC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Davis as far as I know. John Davis was born ca 1807/08 in NC. I first found him on the 1840 census in Yancey County, NC, so it is possible he was born in that area, though in 1808, Yancey was still part of Buncombe and Burke Counties. He lived in the part of Yancey County that was cut off to form Madison County in 1851. Although he lived in that area then (1840 & 1850), I have no way of knowing if he was born in the same area, or if he moved there from elsewhere in NC. If he was born there, then it was either in Burke or Buncombe County. Buncombe County seems more likely than Burke for various reasons. I have no idea who John's parents might be. There are far too many suspects to choose from. However, he did have an apparent brother named Thomas Davis (c1813) who was residing with him in 1850. Thomas was listed as "Insane" on the 1850 census. I don't know who their parents were. They also have a proven sister named Mary Davis (c1816), wife of Elias Hensley (c1817). John Davis married Cynthia --- ca 1830/36 in Yancey Co, NC. I don't have any clues what her maiden name was. John Davis was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County, NC, not listed near any other Davis families. Some of his neighbors were all names known to be in the part of Yancey that later became Madison County, others were still in the Yancey section after Madison's formation. This probably means he lived in the border region. John's next door neighbors in 1840 were William Peek Sr and Benjamin J. (1835/40) –> gone by 1850 John and family were listed in Yancey County for the 1850 census, clearly in the part of Yancey that became Madison in 1851. They may have lived in the border region between Buncombe and Yancey. Their next door neighbors were John J. Maney and Henry M. Holcombe. John's apparent brother Thomas was residing with them, and listed as "Insane". For some reason he was listed first in the household, ahead of John. The house number and family number was cut off on the left margin, so it is possible that Thomas was with the previous family (John J. Maney) and not with John's family.

However, there were several John Davis' listed on the 1860 census in Madison County. One of those might be him. ChildrenJohn and Cynthia had five children by the time of the 1850 census. I have no additional data on them at this time. The 1840 census seems to show another daughter born 1835/40 who was not with them in 1850.
