John Davis (1798) and Sarah Buchanan of Burke, Yancey, Mitchell and Avery Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand Nephew of John Davis.

John Davis was born 20 Oct 1798 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. He was probably named after his Uncle John Davis.

John Davis is a son of William Davis and Frances Carpenter. Some researchers list him as "John David Davis", but I don't know where they got this from, as I've never found any record showing him with a middle name, or even a middle initial. It is certainly possible he had "David" for a middle name, but so far, I've found no record of it, so I'm leaving it off, pending evidence to the contrary.

John was apparently home with his parents for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census in Burke County.

John Davis married Sarah "Sally" Buchanan ca 1820/22 in Burke County. Sally was born ca 1801/02, and other researchers show her as a daughter of Joseph Buchanan (c1767) and Elizabeth Jones. I have not attempted to prove or disprove this connection.

Taking a momentary detour to study the Buchanan family, I have found that there are several ways to spell (or misspell) Buchanan. On the 1790 census, there were none in Burke County, but some in neighboring Lincoln and Rutherford Counties.

In 1800 Burke, there was Mary Buchanan (bef 1755), James Buchanan (1755/74) and another James (bef 1755) and Joseph Buchanan (1755/74). This Joseph is the likely father of Sarah, based on other peoples research. Though this list was alphabetical, he was listed next to James (bef 1755) and a few pages from the other Buchanans.

In 1810, Joseph Buchanan was just a few houses from William Davis, so this supports him being Sarah's father. He had five apparent daughters, under age 10 (born ca 1800/10), which could include Sarah (ca 1802). There were two Arthurs and one William Buchanan on the following page. One Arthur and William were born ca 1765/84, while Arthur Sr was born before 1765. These are probably connected to Joseph somehow. Several pages away was another group of Buchanans, including another Joseph: James (1765/84), Joseph (1765/84, no apparent children), Mary (bef 1765), and John (1765/84).

In 1820, there were several Buchanans in Burke, most on the same page, including Joseph (only one Joseph in 1820). He had several daughters, including three in the 16-25 category (born ca 1794/1804), which fits with Sarah nicely.

In 1830, Joseph Buchanan was listed just a few houses from his son-in-law John Davis. They were obviously in the Three Mile Creek area, based on the neighbors (including William Davis, Jacob Carpenter, etc). John was listed between Moses Washburn and Josiah Wise (his brother-in-law).

In 1833, Yancey County was formed from Burke, and included the area where the Davis family resided.

In 1836, John's father William Davis, made his Will in Yancey County, and named his son "John Davis".

In 1840, John Davis was listed in Yancey Co, NC near numerous relatives. His in-laws, Joseph Buchanan and family, were listed also, but several pages away.

John Davis was listed on the 1840 tax list for Yancey County, in Captain Vance's company. He was taxed for 319 acres, valued at $150, and 1 poll (himself), and his tax was $2.25. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8,  October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

John Davis was listed on the 1841 tax list for Yancey County in Captain Swan's company. He was again charged for 319 acres, valued at $150, and 1 poll. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9,  November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

In the Spring 1848 term of Yancey County Court, the Valuations of Yancey County lands were all reduced  by 33 1/3 cent per acre. John Davis was listed in Cane Creek District with his land of $100 reduced to $66 2/3. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6,  August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

John Davis was listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. He didn't seem to be in the Three Mile Creek area, but probably not too far from there. His neighbors on either side were Dorothy Green (a widow?), and Isaac Grindstaff age 71 and their families.

In 1861, Mitchell County was formed from Yancey, including the section where the Davis family lived.

John and Sarah Davis were listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell County in Bakersville Township. They had their children on either side of them, as well as others nearby. This census taker took note of the county of birth, and not just the state.

Sarah Buchanan Davis died sometime during the 1870's, presumably in Mitchell County. I don't know where she was buried, nor her exact date of death.

John Davis, widowed, was residing with his son James for the 1880 census in Mitchell County. This census asked for the place of birth of the father and mother of each person, as well as their own place of birth. John's was given as "NC", and his father's as "VA" and mother's as "NC".

Children

John and Sarah Buchanan Davis had nine known children, plus one other, per the census records. Many of their children were still with them by 1850, so proven by that census. Others are proven by death records, and other sources. I've found no single source proving all their children.

Sarah Elizabeth Davis (1836-1906)

Rachel E. Davis (1836-1916)

John P. Davis (1838-1919)

Unknown Daughter (1820/25) John Davis had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 and 1840. I don't know who she was. She was born ca 1820/25, and married (or died) between 1840 and 1850.

Some researchers have given "Beadie Davis" born 1829 as a daughter of John and Sarah, however, as far as I can tell (unless her birth date is wrong), she does not belong in this family. Beadie was born in 1829, and married Henry Grindstaff before 1850. Henry was a son of Isaac Grindstaff, who was a next door neighbor of John Davis in 1850, so I can see why some think Beadie is John's daughter. I have not (yet) seen any evidence that Beadie was a Davis, much less a child of John and Sarah. However, I'm open to this being correct, even though she does not seem to fit.

If Beadie isn't the one, then who is? One strong contender is Mary Ann Davis (1824) who married John Green (1818) before 1850 in Yancey Co, NC. The proof of her being a Davis is in death certificates of two of her children, both show her a Davis, but one gives "Mary Ann", the other "Nancy". The 1850 census shows "Mary A. Green", age 26.  I have not traced this family to see what else can be found on them. Joe Erwin of Arlington, VA has written me about them, and may have additional information on them.

Whether Beadie or Mary Ann fits here, I still can't say.

William Davis was born ca 1822/23 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. He was probably named for his grandfather William Davis.

William was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census, and was with them in 1850.

William Davis married Elizabeth Willis ca 1850/54 in Yancey Co, NC (no marriage record found).

I don't know what the proof of Elizabeth's maiden name is. I haven't found anything (so far) to support it being Willis. She was born ca 1834/35 in Yancey County. The 1850 census showed several Willis families in Yancey, including apparent widow Hannah Willis, with a daughter Elizabeth, age 17 (born ca 1832/33), David and Zilpha Willis with daughter Elizabeth age 10 (ca 1839/40), Of these, the second is too young, so the first one (daughter of Hannah) could be the same Elizabeth who married William Davis. I need more data to be sure though.

William and Elizabeth were listed on the 1860 census in Yancey County far from his siblings.

I presently have no additional data on this family, after the 1880 census.

Jacob Davis was born ca 1824/25 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. He was probably named for his Uncle Jacob Davis. I've not seen any direct proof that Jacob was a son of John and Sarah, but it seems likely that he was their child.

Jacob was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.

Jacob Davis married Susan --- before 1850, probably ca 1848 in Yancey Co, NC (no marriage record found). I have no clues as to her maiden name.

I have not been able to locate Jacob and Susan on the 1850 census. They were not in Yancey County, nor neighboring Watauga, nor were they down in Cherokee Co, NC near his Uncle Jacob Davis and Uncle Thomas Davis. I don't know where they might have been. It is possible that they were out of state, temporarily, or that they were just missed for some reason in 1850. They could have been residing with Susan's parents, and listed under that surname by mistake (a common census problem).

Wherever they were in 1850, by 1860 they were back in Yancey Co, NC, and just a few houses from siblings and parents.

Jacob and Susan and family must have lived just outside the bounds of the new Mitchell County, which was created in 1861 from Yancey, taking most of the Davis family with it. However, Jacob and Susan were still in Yancey in 1870, or else moved to Yancey in the meantime. Interestingly, they were enumerated twice, just 7 households apart, and with slightly different data.

I have not yet followed up on this family beyond 1880, so this is the end of my data for them.

Allen Davis was born ca 1828/29 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who he might have been named after, if anyone.

Allen was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.

Allen Davis married Anna Buchanan ca 1849 in Yancey Co, NC. Some other researchers show her as a Boone, but recently Brenda Pittman told me that Anna was a Buchanan. This probably makes her a cousin to Allen Davis, since his mother was also a Buchanan.

Anna was born ca 1831/32. Looking at the 1840 census for Yancey, there were several Buchanan listings with an apparent daughter her age (in the age 5-9 category, born ca 1830/35), including one girl that age with William Buchanan Sr (1760/70), perhaps a granddaughter of his. He was still around in 1850, but had no girl that age with him. In 1840, James Buchanan (c1790/1800) had a girl that age, who was gone from his household by 1850. There were two with Leonard Buchanan (c1800/10) in 1840. In 1850, Leonard still had these two with him, so that excludes him.

The above leaves William Sr (c1765) and James (c1794) as suspects for Anna's parents, though William and wife were too old, they could be her grandparents.

Allen and Anna Buchanan Davis were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey just a few houses from his parents. Both William (c1765) and James Buchanan were very close by, so more evidence she is connected to them.

Mitchell County was created in 1861 from Yancey, and included the area where the Davis family resided.

Allen and family were listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell, but I don't have their listing yet, but they were in Bakersville Township.

Allen and family were listed on the 1880 census in Mitchell County in Grassy Creek Township near their children and other relatives.

I have not followed up on this family past the 1880 census yet.

Josiah David Davis was born ca 1830/31 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who, if anyone, he may have been named after.

Josiah was was apparently with his parents in 1840, and was with them in 1850.

Josiah married Paulina A. Green before ca 1854 in Yancey Co, NC (No marriage record found). I'm not sure what the source of her maiden name is, I have not seen any proof of it so far, but it could be correct. I have found evidence that it might be Wilson instead (see below).

Paulina was born ca 1834/35 in NC, presumably Yancey County. I checked all the 1850 Yancey County Green listings, and found none with a Paulina listed. I also checked neighboring Watauga County, and didn't find her among the many Green's there.

This may mean several things: she wasn't a Green; or she wasn't from Yancey or Watauga; or she was just missed in 1850, or using a different name, a nickname perhaps.

Josiah and Paulina were listed on the 1860 census in Yancey County next door to his parents. A "Lavina Wilson" age 28 was with them, listed as domestic help. I noticed Josiah and Paulina named one of their children "Lavina", so does this indicate that perhaps Paulina was a Wilson instead of a Green, and this Lavina Wilson a sister? There are so many Wilson's in 1850 Yancey, that I was hesitant to browse through them all to look, however, the first one I checked, turned out to be them. In 1850 Yancey County, two houses from John Davis, was the household of apparent widow Elizabeth Bailey, age 70 (born ca 1779/80). With her was Nancy Bailey, 45 (c1804/05), and Lavina S. Wilson, age 20 (c1830) and Paulina A. Wilson, 16 (c1833/34). I think there is no doubt that this is the same person as "Paulina Green", but which maiden name is correct? This is her, but listed as a Wilson. What is her relationship to Elizabeth Bailey? Daughter? Granddaughter? Why do some list her as a "Green" instead. There may be more to this than what I've uncovered so far.

I have not yet traced the family beyond the 1880 census into more recent times.

Margaret Davis was born 18 Dec 1833 in Yancey (now Avery) Co, NC, and was a twin sister of James Henderson Davis.  She may have been named for her Aunt Margaret Davis Wise.

Margaret was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and was with them in 1850 in Yancey Co, NC.

She married William Wilson (1833-1908) in the 1850's in Yancey Co, NC (no marriage record found).

I have no additional data on them as of yet, except that she died 10 Jun 1907, and he died 17 Nov 1908.

I have not yet obtained the 1900 and 1910 and 1920 census records.

James H. Davis died in Mitchell County on 18 May 1919. His death record showed parents as "John Davis" and "Sally Buchanan".

Jane McKinney Davis died in Mitchell on 12 Sep 1932.

Sarah Elizabeth Davis was born 11 Nov 1836 in Yancey (now Avery) Co, NC. She was a twin sister to Rachel E. Davis. Sarah may have been named after her mother Sarah, and grandmother Elizabeth, as well as after her Aunt Elizabeth Davis Vance.

Sarah was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and with them in 1850.

She married John Ellis during the 1850's in Yancey Co, NC.

I have no further information on them at present.

Rachel E. Davis was born 11 Nov 1836 in Yancey (now Avery) Co, NC. She was a twin sister to Sarah Elizabeth Davis. Rachel may have been named after her Aunt Rachel Davis.

Rachel was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and with them in 1850 and 1860.

Rachel married Lindsey Ledford on 5 Sep 1861 in Mitchell Co, NC.

I have no additional data on Rachel's family at present, except that she died in Mitchell County on 12 Aug 1916, and her death record (as "Rachel Ledford", age "about 81"), showed her parents as "John Davis" and "Sally Buchanan".

John P. Davis was born 14 Oct 1838 in Yancey (now Avery) Co, NC. He was probably named after his father. I don't have a clue what the "P" middle initial was for, unless he (like so many others from this timeframe), was named after Colonel John Patton, a well known figure in western North Carolina in those days.

John was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census, and was home with them in 1850 and 1860.

"John P. Davis" married Matilda Buchanan on 5 Jul 1866 in Mitchell County. They were married by R. N. Penland, JP.

Matilda Buchanan was born ca 1847/48, in Yancey, and was a child (according to her death certificate) of John Buchanan and Elizabeth Burleson. I didn't find John and Elizabeth, nor a Matilda Buchanan in 1850 Yancey Co, NC census. Death certificates are notoriously inaccurate, so perhaps her parents were of some other given names, though certainly Buchanans.

John and Matilda were listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell County, NC next to his parents.

Matilda Buchanan Davis died in Mitchell County on 20 Dec 1913. Her death record showed her parents as "John Buchanan" and "Betsy Burleson".

John P. Davis died in Mitchell County on 17 Dec 1919. His death record listed his birth date as (wrong) 14 Oct 1847, which was off by nine years. It listed his father as "John Davis" and mother as "Mary" with a question mark by it.
