Thomas Davis (1765/70) of Burke and McDowell Co, NC and Blount Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I am related to Thomas Davis. Thomas Davis was born ca 1765/70, possibly somewhere in North Carolina. He was in Burke County before 1790, and apparently already married by then. His wife (name unknown) was born ca 1755/60. I don't know who this Thomas Davis' parents are, but I once thought he was a brother of my ancestor William Davis (1730/40) who lived in Burke and had a brother named Thomas. But I don't think they are siblings, because this Thomas is way younger than my William (30 to 45 years difference). However, it does seem reasonable to assume that this Thomas may be a brother of a younger William Davis, who with wife Sally, lived near him in old Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. The 1790 census does show one Thomas Davis in Burke County. He was listed in the 4th Company, and the only Davis in that grouping. His neighbors on either side were John Doaty and William England. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Burke Co, NC pg 107 Thomas Davis 1-2-1-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Thomas DAVIS (1765/70) 2 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? (1774/90) --> gone by 1800 Son? (1784/90) John Davis (1784/94) might be son 1 Female(s) any age (before 1790) Wife? (1755/60) Now, in 1800, Thomas was still in Burke County, however, this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell who his neighbors were, so we can't be sure where he lived exactly, or approximately. 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Burke Co, NC pg 740 Thomas Davis 21010-10010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) Thomas DAVIS (1765/70) 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1784-1790) Son? (1784/90)--> gone by 1810 John (1784/94) could be this son. He married Mary Davis in 1810 and was living very near Thomas in 1810 2 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Son? (1790/94) Son? (1794/1800) 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) Wife? (1755/60) 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800) In 1810, Thomas was still in Burke. His neighbors included William Porter (or Posten), and William England Sr (same neighbor as in 1790!). He was two houses from widow Sarah Davis (widow of a William Davis), and also near a young John Davis. He was clearly in the part of Burke that later became McDowell County. This seems to show a connection between this Thomas and that William who was born ca 1755/74. Perhaps they are brothers. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Burke Co, NC pg 331 Thomas Davis 01110-01001 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Thomas DAVIS (1765/70) 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Son? (1790/94) 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Son? (1794/1800) 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1765) Wife? (1755/60) 1 Female(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800) By 1820, this Thomas Davis was no longer in Burke County. He may have died, or moved away. A Thomas Davis, about this same age appeared in nearby Blount County, Tennessee about this same time. I've long suspected that was the same person as this Burke County Thomas Davis. However, I don't know that for sure. The 1820 census for all of Eastern Tennessee was lost, so we can't verify his 1820 entries. In 1830 Blount Co, TN, a Thomas Davis was listed, possibly being this same man formerly of Burke. Keep in mind it is far from proven that the Thomas of Blount is the same as the Thomas of Burke. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Blount County, TN pg 301 Thomas Davis 0100010010000-0001000001000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 60-69 (1760-1770) Thomas DAVIS (1765/70) 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Son? 1 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Son? 1 Female(s) 70-79 (1750-1760) Wife? (1755/60) 1 Female(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Daughter? This Thomas was still in Blount County, Tennessee for the 1840 census. Though his wife had apparently died during the 1830's. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Blount County, TN pg 108 Thomas Davis 1000000001000-1000010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 70-79 (1760-1770) Thomas DAVIS (1760/70) 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Grandson? or son? 1 Female(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Daughter? 2nd wife? 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Granddaughter? or daughter? This Thomas Davis was not listed on the 1850 census in Blount Co, TN, so probably had died during the 1840's, or moved away. Though at his age, moving anywhere seems less likely. ChildrenThomas Davis and wife had several children, per the various census records. Unfortunately, none of the names of these children are proven so far. In 1830 Blount Co, TN, Thomas had a boy age 5-9 (c1820/25), which would have to be a grandson. In 1840, he had a boy and girl born 1835/40, which also would have to be grandchildren, unless he remarried during the 1830's. Unknown Son (1774/1790). Thomas Davis had an apparent son this age with him in 1790, who was gone by 1800, unless then in the 1790/1800 age grouping (which if he was born ca 1790, he could be). There were no "new" Davis heads of household in 1800 who fit this age group, so either this child died or moved away in the 1790's, or else was in the 1790/1800 group with his father in 1800. Unknown Son (1784/1790). Thomas Davis had an apparent son this age with him in 1790 (under age 16, ca 1774/1790), who was still with him in 1800, age 10-15, ca 1784/1790. I'm not sure if this son was still at home in 1810, but there was one age 16-25, born ca 1784/94, but that might be one of the two ca 1790/1800 sons from 1800, if born ca 1790/94. Assuming the one in 1810 was one of the younger sons, then this son (1784/90) must have married or moved away by 1810. There are a couple of possible suspects. A John Davis (c1784/94) in 1810 was listed on page 314. He may be the John who married Ann Keller in Burke in 1809. This John had one son under 10 (born ca 1800/10), which supports an 1809 marriage date. However, another John Davis (c1784/94) is a better suspect, as he was just a couple of houses from Thomas Davis in 1810. This John appeared to be a newlywed, with a wife his same age, and no children yet. This might be the John Davis who married Mary Davis on or after 8 Jan 1810 (date of marriage bond). Thomas Welch was the bondsman, so that doesn't really provide any clues as to John's identity. Based only on the 1810 census records, those two John Davis', both the same age, are the best candidates to be Thomas' unknown son born ca 1784/90. However, both of these could belong to someone else. Based on just circumstantial evidence, and a gut feeling, I'd say John who married Mary Davis was the one. This Mary is probably the Mary Davis (c1790) daughter of William and Sally Davis. John was living next to widow Sarah in 1810, and just a few houses from Thomas. Unknown Son (1790/1794). Thomas Davis had an apparent son with him this age in 1800 (age under 10, born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810, age 16-25, born ca 1784/94. Since we don't have a listing for Thomas in 1820, we don't know if this son was still at home then. However, in 1830 (Blount Co, TN), Thomas had a son age 30-39 with him, born ca 1790/1800. Whether this is this son, or his younger brother (1794/1800), I can't say. Whether this one, or the other one, he was not at home with Thomas in 1840. Unknown Son (1794/1800). Thomas Davis had an apparent son with him this age in 1800 (age under 10, born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810, age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800. Since we don't have a listing for Thomas in 1820, we don't know if this son was still at home then. However, in 1830 (Blount Co, TN), Thomas had a son age 30-39 with him, born ca 1790/1800. Whether this is this son, or his older brother (1790/94, I can't say. Whether this one, or the other one, he was not at home with Thomas in 1840. Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Thomas Davis had an apparent daughter with him this age in 1800 (age under 10, born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810, age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800. Since we don't have a listing for Thomas in 1820, we don't know if this daughter was still at home then. However, in 1830 (Blount Co, TN), this daughter was not with Thomas Davis. So she must have married in the 1810 to 1830 timeframe, either in Burke Co, NC or Blount Co, TN. A marriage bond between James Lewis and Sally Davis dated 23 Sep 1815 in Burke County had Thomas Davis as a bondsman, and also Bennett Bradford. This could be Thomas signing for his daughter, or this could be the younger Thomas Davis (son of William and Sarah), who was of age by 1815. The 1820 Burke census shows James Lewis (1775/94) and wife (1775/94), so that seems to be this couple, an her age makes her an unlikely match for this daughter of Thomas unless born ca 1794. They were not in Burke in 1830, nor in Blount Co, TN. This could be the daughter of Thomas, but I'm not at all sure. Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Since we don't have a listing for Thomas in 1820, we don't know if this child was at home with him then. However, in 1830 (Blount Co, TN), Thomas had an apparent daughter age 15-19 with him, born ca 1810/15. Whether this is a daughter, or granddaughter I can't say. In 1840, Thomas Davis had a female age 30-39 (born ca 1800/10) residing with him. That could be this same person, if born ca 1810.
