Thomas Davis (c1805) and Arabella Burchfield of Burke, Yancey, Cherokee and Graham Co, NC and Blount Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand Nephew of Thomas Davis. Special thanks to Evelyn Tharp, and Charlene Davis and others for data shared on this family. Thomas Davis was born ca 1804/05 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC in the Three Mile Creek area. He is a son of William Davis and Frances Carpenter. He may have been named after his alleged Uncle Thomas Davis. Thomas was apparently home with his parents for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census, all in Burke County, NC. Thomas Davis married Arabella Burchfield on 9 Nov 1830 in Burke Co, NC (marriage was reported in newspaper, I don't have exact reference handy, but will try to track it down again). Arabella Burchfield was born ca 1811/12 in Burke Co, NC. Over the years she was listed by many name variations such as "Everilla", "Abysilla", "Avarilla", "Marilla" and others. Her surname can be spelled "Birchfield" or "Burchfield". I'm not sure what the preferred spelling is, or if both spellings are just as common. Arabella was a daughter of Robert Burchfield (1774-1860) and Elizabeth Hill (1776-1842) of Burke Co, NC and later of Blount Co, TN. Regarding the Burchfield family, I found that there was only one in all of North Carolina in 1790, and that was in Burke County "Mishh Burchfield". This must be "Michael" who was here in 1800 as well. In 1800 Burke County, there were several, including Michael (bef 1755), Nathan (1774/84) and Nathan (1774/84) who's enumeration was almost identical to the other Nathan, so perhaps a duplicate. In 1810 Burke, there was Robert Burchfield (1784/94), and Hezekiah (1765/84) several pages away. This Robert was Arabella's father, and he and his wife seem to have four children, 2 sons and 2 daughters, all under 10, born ca 1800/10. In 1820 Burke, there were several Burchfield listings, including Robert. Several of the Burchfields (including Robert) were clearly in the part of Burke County that later became McDowell County. Robert had three daughters under 10, born ca 1810/20, one of which should be Arabella (c1812). In 1830 Burke, Robert Burchfield was listed, probably still in the area that later became McDowell, but some of his neighbors were also those who lived in the section that later became Yancey, so perhaps he had moved in the 1820's. That could explain how his daughter met Thomas Davis, who was a Three Mile Creek resident. In 1830, Robert had no apparent daughter with him who was Arabella's age, so that means she was living elsewhere, perhaps with a married sibling, or as domestic help in someone else's house. She would have been 18 or 19 then, so of perfect age for that. Thomas Davis and Arabella Burchfield married in late 1830, and lived in the Three Mile Creek area (I think) until at least 1832. They left North Carolina between 1832 and 1835 and moved to the Cades Cove region of Blount County, Tennessee, as did many of the Burchfields, including her parents. Thomas's brother Jacob Davis joined them a few years later. There were several Davis families already in Blount Co, TN before Thomas moved there, and I've wondered if some of them were relatives. With a name this common though, it is not likely that all were related, though some certainly could be. The 1840 census shows Thomas Davis in Blount Co, TN, listed near his brother Jacob Davis, and a John Davis (1790/1800) who might be a relative, but not their brother John, who remained in NC. This John certainly could be a cousin though. I don't have this listing typed up yet for publication. Thomas and family moved back to Blount County, TN before 1870, and were listed there for the 1870 census. Thomas and family moved from Blount County, TN back to Graham County, NC before 1880. They were listed on the 1880 census in Graham County in Cheoah Township. He seems to be listed as Thomas Davis "Jr", however, on close examination, I think it could say "Sr", though it looks more like "Jr". However, there were no older Thomas' in the county than him, so no reason for him to be listed as "Jr". There was a younger Thomas though (his nephew Isaac Thomas Davis, son of Jacob Davis), so it would make sense for this Thomas to be listed as "Sr" or the other as "Jr". Thomas was listed as born in NC, and his father's place of birth was given as Virginia, and mother as North Carolina.

His marker says "Tommy Davis" with no other data. Arabella Burchfield Davis died sometime after 1880, though whether before or after Thomas, I don't know. In any event, she died at Cades Cove, Blount Co, TN and was buried at the Davis Cemetery there. A descendant of theirs told me that Arabella died of something contagious, and that is why they didn't bring her home to be buried by her husband, but buried her where she died, in Tennessee. I forget who told me that, but I'll try to find it in my old correspondence. ChildrenThomas Davis and Arabella Burchfield had nine known children, all proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. If they had any other children, they probably died young. George Washington Davis (1852) William Davis was born ca 1830/31 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Blount Co, TN and was with them in 1850 Cherokee Co, NC. I suspect he was named for his grandfather William Davis. William went with his parents to neighboring Polk Co, TN in the 1850's. There he married Susan --- before ca 1858. I don't know what her maiden name might have been. I don't have William and family on the 1860 census, they may have been in Polk or Blount Co, TN. The Polk Co, TN index for 1860 shows a William Davis and a "W. Davis" in Polk. William and family were in Blount Co, TN, Chillowhee Township in 1870. I don't have the listing yet. I don't have any data on William beyond 1870. I need to do some more research on this branch of the family. Louisa E. Davis was born 23 Jan 1832 in Burke (now Avery) Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census in Blount Co, TN and was with them in 1850 Cherokee Co, NC. Louisa married John Aron Hyde ca 1850/51 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. He was a son of John Hyde and Elizabeth Beck. The John Hyde family was just a few houses from the Thomas Davis family in 1850 Cherokee Co, NC census. I did not find John and Louisa on the 1860 census, at least not in Cherokee Co, NC. John's father John (Sr) was still in Cherokee for 1860. However, Louisa's parents were in neighboring Polk Co, TN, so perhaps she and husband John had moved over there temporarily. The birth places of their children support this theory, as son Lafayette was born 1858 in TN, and the next few children, through 1865 were born in TN, and back to NC by ca 1868/69. Regardless of where they were in 1860, John and Louisa were back in Cherokee Co, NC for the 1870 census, and listed in Cheoah Township.

They were in Cheoah Township just a few houses from her brother John R. Davis. This census shows Louisa had 10 children total, but only nine still living. We've only identified 9 children, so one more must have died young.

John A. Hyde died in Altus, OK on 28 Jan 1919. A few months later, Louisa died there on 20 May 1919. Thanks to Evelyn Tharp for locating their death records. Nancy Evaline Davis was born ca 1834/35 in Cades Cove, Blount Co, TN. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census in Blount Co, TN and was with them in 1850 Cherokee Co, NC. She was still with them in 1860 Polk Co, TN as well. Evaline had a child out of wedlock in 1854, the reputed father was Marion Rose. I know nothing else of him at this time. The child was named Marion Davis or Marion Burchfield (technically, he should have taken his mother's maiden name of "Davis", but he apparently took his step-father's name, perhaps he was legally adopted). Evaline Davis married Samuel Burchfield on 27 Jan 1862 in Blount Co, TN, or at least that was the date of the marriage bond, with Curran Lemon as the bondsman. Samuel was known as "Long Hair Sam" Burchfield, probably to distinguish him from another Samuel Burchfield. He was a son of Wilson Burchfield, a brother of Robert Burchfield, who was Evaline's grandfather. That makes Sam and Evaline 1st cousins 1 time removed. I don't have the records, but Sam and Evaline were listed on the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census in Blount Co, TN. Evaline died in 1908 in Blount Co, TN, and Sam in 1917. Jacob Davis was born ca 1836/37 in Cades Cove, Blount Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Blount Co, TN and was with them in 1850 Cherokee Co, NC. Jacob Davis married Sarah --- ca 1859 in Cherokee Co, NC. I have no clues about her possible maiden name. Jacob and Sarah were listed on the 1860 census in Cherokee Co, NC. He was listed in Beaverdam Township, which is quite a distance from the Cheoah Township area where he was from. This could be a census quirk, or perhaps he moved to that area for a time. The latter seems to be the case. It is also possible that this Jacob was not the same Jacob who was son of Thomas, but his name, age and birthplace are all in agreement, so I'm fairly sure it is the same person.

Shoal Creek Township was near Beaverdam Township. I don't have this entry typed up yet. I haven't traced Jacob and Sarah beyond 1870 yet. John Robert Davis was born 18 Dec 1840 in Cades Cove, Blount Co, TN. He was home with his parents in 1850 Cherokee Co, NC and 1860 Polk Co, TN. John R. Davis married Anna Starkey ca 1860/61 in either Polk or Blount Co, TN (no marriage record found, so probably in Polk Co, TN). Anna Starkey was born 14 Jul 1839 in TN (date proven by tombstone). I don't know what county she was born in, but it was probably in East Tennessee, such as Blount, Polk, or some county in that vicinity. Since John R. Davis was in Polk Co, TN in 1860, and married either that same year, or the next year, it seems reasonable he met and married her there. I checked the 1850 census for TN and found numerous Starkey listings (including "Starky", "Starkie", etc). None were in Blount or Polk or other counties that seemed likely. There were several in Sevier County, TN which borders NC, but none of them had a daughter that fit. So I still don't know who Anna's parents were, nor where she was born. I don't have John and Anna on the 1870 census yet. Their children born in that timeframe, were born in NC, but I don't know where they were. I did not find them in Cherokee County where most of his family was. His parents were in Blount Co, TN in 1870, so perhaps he was as well. I have not checked yet though. In 1880, John and Anna were in Graham County, NC next door to his parents.
