William Davis (c1814) and Cynthia (Gentry) of Buncombe, Yancey and Madison Co, NC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to William Davis as far as I know. Special thanks to Kenneth Wilde for data shared on this family. William Davis was born ca 1813/14 in NC. I first found him on the 1850 census in Yancey County, NC, so it is possible he was born in that area, though in 1814, Yancey was still part of Buncombe and Burke Counties. He lived in the part of Yancey County that was cut off to form Madison County in 1851. Although he lived in that area then, I have no way of knowing if he was born in the same area, or if he moved there from elsewhere in NC. If he was born there, then it was either in Burke or Buncombe County. Buncombe County seems more likely than Burke for various reasons. I have no idea who William's parents might be. There are far too many suspects to choose from. However, we can narrow the suspects down a little by census analysis. I'm only going to use the Buncombe County Davis families as suspects, but it could be that William was from one of the Burke families, but I don't think so at this time. Presumably, William was home with his parents for the 1820 census. He would have been approximately 6 years old, so should have been listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). There were lots of Davis' in Buncombe in 1820 with sons his age, so this does not help too much, but here they are: : William Davis (bef 1775) pg 74; John Davis (1794/1804) pg 74; Aaron Davis (1794/1804) pg 74; James Davis (1775/94) pg 74; John Davis (1775/94) pg 74; Nathaniel Davis (1775/94) pg 74; John Davis Jr (1775/94) pg 90; Nathan Davis (1794/1804) pg 90; Reason Davis (1775/94) pg 92; John Davis (1775/94) pg 96; Douglass Davis (1775/94) pg 112; John Davis (1775/94) pg 118; Uriah Davis (1775/94) pg 122; Bartlett Davis (bef 1775) pg 123; and Benjamin Davis (1775/94) pg 123. In 1830, William would have been about 16 years old, so he should have been enumerated in the age 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). That narrows the above list down a little bit. In 1830 Buncombe, the following Davis households had at least one male that age: Richard J. Davis (1780/90); James Davis (1780/90) pg 243; Margaret Davis (1780/90) pg 244; Benjamin Davis (1780/90) pg 244; Daniel Davis (1800/10) pg 244; John Davis (1780/90) pg 254; Nathaniel Davis (1780/90) pg 263; Evan Davis (1790/1800) pg 264; Elizabeth Davis (1770/80) pg 264; Reason Davis (1790/1800) pg 302; John Davis (1780/90) pg 305. Several of the above families seemed to be in the future Madison County area. More research will be needed to narrow that list down any. William Davis married Cynthia Gentry ca 1830/35 in Buncombe (now Madison) Co, NC. Kenneth Wilde says her maiden name is Gentry, and that she is a child of Jesse and Nancy Gentry. I don't know what evidence he has for that, but it sounds reasonable. His work is always very reliable. William Davis was listed on the 1840 census in Buncombe County, NC. He wasn't near any other Davis' nor near his in-laws. I'm not totally sure this listing is for the right William, but the ages for him and his wife and their three kids are a perfect match. They were listed between J. Whitemore and M. H. Lewis. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Buncombe County, NC pg 152 Wm Davis 1100100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) William DAVIS (1813/14) 1 Male(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Alfred DAVIS (1834/35) son 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Robert DAVIS 1836/37) son 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Cynthia GENTRY Davis (1815/16) wife 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Nancy DAVIS (1835/36) daughter They must have moved slightly during the 1840's, for by 1850 they were listed in Yancey County, though clearly in the part of Yancey that became Madison in 1851. They may have lived in the border region between Buncombe and Yancey. In 1850, they were listed next door to Hickman M. Hensley and George Shelton. No other Davis families were nearby.

ChildrenWilliam and Cynthia had seven children by the time of the 1850 census. I have very little additional data on them. What I do have on their son Jesse J. Davis was shared by Kenneth Wilde. I found marriage records for several of these children in Madison County, NC, but I'm not sure if they are for the right ones or others with the same names.
