The author (Marty Grant)
is not related to Barnabas Evans as far as can be proven. It is possible (but
not too likely) that
he is related to my ancestor William
Evans (c1813).
Barnabas (or "Barney") Evans was born ca 1817/18
(per 1850 census) in North Carolina, presumably Ashe, now Alleghany County.
I have not positively identified his parents, but
I'd say he has to be either a son of Barnabas
Evans (c1769) or William Evans (1770/80)
and Alcy ---, as both of these men (presumed brothers) had an unknown son
his age per the early census records, and it seems clear he was named for
Barnabas, but that doesn't prove he was his son for children were often named
for Uncles as well.
He was not named in the Will
(1851) of the elder Barnabas, so he probably isn't his son. Others show him to
be a son of William Evans, and it does fit.
Barnabas would have been about 2 year old by the time of the 1820 census.
However, I was unable to find either William Evans or Barnabas Evans in 1820 or
any other Evans in Ashe County.
For the 1830 census Barnabas Evans would have been about 12 years old. Both
Barnabas and William Evans each had one son with them that year aged 10-14 (born
ca 1815/20).
Barnabas would have been about 22 by the 1840 census. He was not listed as
head of household that year, nor did he appear to be living with Barnabas Evans
or any of the other Evans found in Ashe County in 1840. He could have been
living with a sibling or someone else.
Sometime before ca 1849, Barney Evans married Elizabeth ---. No
marriage record was found. She was born ca 1826/27 in North Carolina. I don't
know her maiden name. There is a marriage record in nearby Surry Co., NC for a
Barnet Evans and Elizabeth Bowles dated 3 Nov 1847. This may be them,
though I don't know what Barney was doing there. Elizabeth Bowles is probably a
relative of mine, possibly a daughter of Ellender "Nelly" (---) Bowles.
They were in Ashe County for the 1850 census. They were next door to widow
Alcy Evans (widow of William). Perhaps this is proof that she was his mother.

In the late 1850's (between 1852 and ca 1857) Barnabas and family moved to
Wyoming County, Virginia (now West Virginia) joining
William Evans (c1809), his probable
brother who was already there. I made this discovery by searching for all the
Barnabas Evans in 1860 throughout the land (there were not many). It is clearly
the same family I found in West Virginia who was in Ashe Co, NC before then.
Barney and family were listed on the 1860 census in Wyoming County. Brother
William Evans was listed in the same area.

They were still in Wyoming for the 1870 census. Son Hampton, now married, was
next door with his family. Brother William was listed that year with the same
Post Office, though in a different Township.

Barnabas Evans apparently died between 1870 and 1880 in Wyoming County West
Virginia.
Widow Elizabeth and children were still in Wyoming County for the 1880
census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Children of Barnabas and
Elizabeth Bowles Evans.
Barnabas Evans and Elizabeth had four children as proven by the various
census records.
