> Isham Evans
The author (Marty Grant)
is not related to Isham Evans as far as can be proven. It is possible that
he is related to my ancestor William
Evans (c1813) as they both lived in Macon Co., NC.
Special thanks to Juanita Naron of Texas for data
shared on this family.
Isham (also spelled "Isom" and other alternate
ways) Evans was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census) or 2 Apr 1822 (per Juanita
Naron, I'm not sure of her source). He was born in
Haywood County, North
Carolina (per 1850 census).
I have not identified Isham's parents, but there were a couple of Evans in
Haywood County who could be his parents. Refer to the census analysis below for
various possibilities.
For the 1830 census, Isham would have been about 5 to 8 years old, so ought
to be enumerated in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). In Haywood County,
Isham Evans (1770/75) and
Samuel Evans (1781), both had apparent
sons that age. Either of them could be Isham's father, but Isham (Sr) is
apparently not, for he had a much younger son named "Isham". That leaves Samuel
as a prime suspect. The only Evans in Macon County in 1830 was
Zachariah Evans (c1795), and he had two
apparent sons that age, but they are both identified.
For the 1840 census, Isham should be about 18 years old, so he should be
enumerated in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1820/25). In Haywood County,
Samuel Evans (1781) had one son that age,
John C. Evans (1795) had one son that age,
but I think he is already identified, thus, again leaving Samuel as the prime
suspect.
Isham Evans was in neighboring Macon County for the 1850 census living with
the Nathan G. Allman family, Allman was a merchant, and also born in Haywood, so
possibly related somehow. Of special interest is Evaline Rhinehart (c1828)
who was also in the household. She could be a daughter of Coonrod
Rhinehart and Harriett Evans (c1796) who married in 1821 in Haywood. If so (and
this is just an assumption), then Isham could be a nephew of or somehow closely
related to Harriett. I don't know who her parents or siblings were, but I
thought I'd mention it as a clue for further research.

According to Juanita Naron, Isham Evans married Nancy Trammell ca 1850
in Macon County (presumably later in the year after the census taker visited). I
did not find a marriage record in Macon. Nancy was born ca 1829/30 (per 1850
census) in Macon County (per 1850 census), daughter of Jacob B. Trammell and
Mary "Polly" --- (per 1850 census). Her family lived very close to the
Zachariah Evans (1795) family,
suggesting a relationship between him and Isham (perhaps his Uncle?).
According to Juanita, this family moved to Benton County, Arkansas in the
early 1850's. I did find them there on the 1860 census, strangely listed twice
within just a few households of each other, but with slightly different
listings. Can't imagine how that happened! I don't know which entry is the most
accurate.

I have not studied this family beyond 1860. Juanita told me that they moved
to Mills Co, TX later.
Children of Isham and
Nancy Trammell Evans.
Isham and Nancy had 8 children according to Juanita Naron.
Five of those are
proven by the 1860 census.
