Samuel Floyd was ca 1799/1800 per his age on the 1850 census (50)
and the 1860 census mortality schedule (60). He was probably born in
what is now Horry County, though the 1850 census lists his birth place
as Marion District. That could be correct, but it seems unlikely. He is
a son of
Samuel Floyd (bef 1755) as proven by an 1821 deed when Samuel gave
property to his son Samuel. Samuel seems to be home with his parents
for the 1800 census aged under 10 (born 1790/1800), and still home in
1810 age 10-15 (1794/1800). He is either with his parents in 1820, aged
16-25 (1794/1804) or with his brother Francis, same age group.
On 12 Mar 1821 Samuel Floyd Senr deeded land to his sons Harmon and
Samuel Floyd. Witnessed by Levi Alford and William Hill. (Horry
Co., SC Deed Book C1 page 124
Horry County Historical Society).
Samuel Floyd married Sarah A. Adams before ca 1824, probably
in Marion District, though possibly in Horry instead. Sarah was born ca
1809/10 per her age on the 1850 census (40). In 1860 she was 49 and in
1870 she was 59. She may be Sarah Adams, daughter of Abner
Adams and wife Jane (---). Their daughter Sarah married a Floyd, though
it isn’t certain if this is the same Sarah. One reason for believing so
is that Samuel Floyd was the administrator of her father’s Estate. That
strongly suggests that he is the one married to Sarah Adams.
Another possibility is that Sarah, wife of Samuel Floyd, is Sarah
Ann Floyd, daughter of
Lewis Floyd. That Sarah also married a Floyd. Which of these two
Sarah’s is the wife of Samuel Floyd? Can’t say for sure. Both are age
compatible, both are in the right area, both have the right name. Both
have otherwise unidentified husbands named Floyd. More research may
resolve this, though I think Sarah Adams is the better choice, but I
could certainly be wrong.
On 11 Apr 1825 Samuel Floyd, Jr. (and P. J. Mallett) witnessed a deed
between John Newsom of Marion Dist., SC and Hugh Campbell of
Fayetteville, NC. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book L, page 162). Samuel was
referred to as “Jr.” because his father was still alive and in the same
county.
On 1 Aug 1825 Samuel Floyd, Jr. and Samuel Hodges and H. G. Fladger
witnessed a deed from David S. Harllee, Sheriff of Marion District, to
James Floyd of Horry Dist., SC. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book L, page
185 & 191).
On 12 Oct 1827 Samuel Floyd and Francis Floyd, Q.U. (his brother)
witnessed a deed from David P. Newsom of Marion Dist., SC to Thomas
Coatsworth Floyd of Robeson Co., NC. I have not been able to identify
Thomas C. Floyd. Samuel had a son of that same name, but he was only
about 2 years old at this time, so probably not him. (Marion Co., SC
Deed Book N, page 16).
On 22 Dec 1828 Jane Adams, widow of Abner Adams, deceased) swore
before
Francis Floyd, Justice of Marion District, that her late husband
had, in his lifetime, given his daughter Sally Floyd a certain
negro girl by the name of Rose, and to his daughter Elizabeth Hayes he
gave a negro girl named Milly, and he gave his daughter Demaris Floyd a
negro girl named Chaney. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book M, page 219).
This Sally Floyd may be Sarah A., wife of Samuel Floyd. “Sally” is a
common nickname for “Sarah.”
Samuel Floyd is listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. He is
listed with a middle initial, though it isn’t certain whether it is an
“S” or an “L.” His age is also way off, though the rest of the
household seems correct, more or less. Mrs. Floyd’s age is off somewhat
too. It is quite possible that this household is for Samuel’s father
(also named Samuel) instead, though it is thought he was dead by then.
Also, the elder Samuel was born before 1760/70.

Francis Floyd "for the love and good will that I bear towards my
father I give and bequeath unto the lawful begotten heirs of that he
shall begat by his wife Polly Floyd" he gave four slaves (Mingo, Viny,
Luke and Hannah) to be equally divided between the heirs after the death
of his father and and his wife Polly. He never mentioned his father's
name in the deed, but it is pretty clear he was referring to Samuel. The
deed was witnessed by Samuel Floyd Jr and
Harmon Floyd. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book O, page 145)
On 12 Nov 1835
Francis Floyd and Jesse Ford of Marion Dist., made a deed to Everet
Nichols and Harmon Floyd for $350 for 300 acres on north east side of
Little Pee Dee and both sides of Raft Swamp, being the same land
purchased from James Floyd Sr. Francis signed, but his wife wasn't
mentioned. Jesse Ford also signed. Samuel Floyd and John
Yelverton witnessed. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book Q, page 48).
They are listed on the 1840 census in Marion District.

50, born Marion, Sarah 40, Ann 26, Thomas 25, Susan 20, Samuel 15,
Harmon 12, Daniel 7 and Charles 1.
On 31 Oct 1851 Samuel Floyd and Samuel J. Floyd (probably his son)
witnessed a deed from Jesse Allen and wife Eady to C. P. Floyd (son of
Harmon Floyd). (Marion Co., SC Deed Book V, page 465).
Samuel Floyd died in June 1859 of inflammation of the bowels. This is
proven by the
1860 census Mortality Schedule which lists his death and some
details.
His widow and children are listed on the 1860 census in Marion
District, Floydsville Post Office: Sarah A. Floyd 49 born NC, Danl A.
18 born SC, Chas A. 11 SC, Francis C. 9 SC, and Rena Bryant 5 SC.
Sarah was listed on the 1870 census in Marion County in Hillsboro
Township living by herself: Sarah A. Floyd age 59, born SC.
I wasn’t able to find Sarah on the 1880 census. She may have died by
then. |
