Jacob Fouts (c1786) and Mary Margaret Baker of Ashe and Macon Co, NC

I have moved my research on this family to WeRelate.org a Genealogy Wiki. Click here to go to the page for this family and feel free to collaborate!

Jane Fouts was born ca 1813/14 (per 1850 census) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 census). Jane was apparently with her family for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).

Jane moved with her parents to Macon County in the 1830's.

On 21 Sep 1836, Jane Fouts married William Rowland in Macon County. William was born 4 Oct 1813, a son of Joseph Rowland and Elizabeth Fouts. This means Jane and William were cousins. The marriage bond listed Jane's father as Jacob Fouts, and James Fouts (her brother) was bondsman.

On 30 Sep 1836 William Roland received a State Land Grant for 50 acres on the west side of Tennessee River. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 366)

They were listed on the 1840 census in Macon Co, NC next door to William's parents.

They were still in Nantahala for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Jane Fouts Rowland died 20 Jan 1886 and William died on 21 Mar 1907 and are buried at Aquone Cemetery (per Fouts book). I've been to that cemetery a couple of times, and did not see their graves, but was not looking for them at the time.

Elender "Nellie" Fouts was born ca 1817/18 (per 1860 census) in Ashe Co, NC (assumed). Nellie was apparently with her family for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20).

Nellie moved with her parents to Macon County in the 1830's. Nellie married Samuel H. Waters on 19 Aug 1834 in Macon Co, NC. See their own page for additional information.

William P. Fouts was born 10 Jan 1820 (per Fouts book) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 census). He was apparently home with his parents in 1820 (aged "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). He came to Macon Co, NC with his parents and siblings in the 1830's.

William married Adeline Jane Wild on 16 Mar 1839 in Macon Co, NC. She was a daughter of John J. Wild and Margaret Hensley. (See my Hensley pages also).

They were listed on the 1840 census in Macon County next to his parents.

On 30 Dec 1848 William Fouts received a State Land Grant of 30 acres on Burningtown Creek. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 46).

They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County.

On 15 Aug 1851, George F. Caler of Gilmer Co, GA sold 64 acres to William Fouts of Macon Co, NC. Signed by George F. Caler and J. C. Caler. (Jeptha C. Caylor, his son). Witnessed by Jacob Fouts. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 294).

On 25 Aug 1851, George F. Caler of Gilmer Co, GA sold 50 acres to William Fouts of Macon. Same signatures and witnesses as previous deed. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 292).

On 27 Dec 1854, William Fouts received a 100 acre Land Grant on Burningtown Creek, entered 22 Mar 1852. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 53).

Sometime in the 1850's William and family moved to nearby Gilmer County, Georgia. I have not followed up on them there.

Rebecca Fouts was born May 1822 (per 1900 census) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). She moved with them to Macon Co, NC in the 1830's.

On 20 Mar 1838 Rebecca married Michael J. Waters in Macon Co, NC. (Michael and Rebecca are my ancestors). Michael was born ca 1815/20 in either Mecklenburg Co, NC or Haywood Co, NC, a son of Michael Waters and Emelia Stewart.

Michael J. Waters died ca 1846 in Macon Co, NC. Rebecca married second to Reuben P. Evans in 1849. Reuben was a first cousin to her first husband, a son of Zachariah Evans and Mary Waters.

Reuben Evans died between 1880 and 1900 in Macon County, and Rebecca died between 1900 and 1910. They are both buried at Aquone Cemetery in Macon County.

See Michael and Rebecca's page for more information on their family as well as the Reuben Evans family.

Charlotte Fouts was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 census). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). She moved with them to Macon Co, NC in the 1830's.

I did not find a marriage record for them, but apparently Charlotte Fouts married George Clampett just before 1840 in Macon County. He was a brother to Richard Clampett who married Charlotte's sister. He was born ca 1819/20 in Stokes Co, NC a son of George Clampett (Sr) and Ann ---.

George Clampett was listed on the 1840 census on the same page with brothers-in-law James Fouts and Michael J. Waters, though several houses away. George had an "extra" female with him the same age as his wife. I don't know who this might have been.

On 12 Dec 1851 George Clampet sold 50 acres on Iotla Creek to Tadeous P. Siler. Witnessed by M. R. Slagle and John Cline. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 364).

George Clampett and wife Charlotte were named in the 1854 estate records of her father Jacob Fouts.

Charlotte Fouts Clampett died sometime between 1854 and 1860 in Macon Co, NC.

I was unable to locate George Clampett on the 1860 census.

George Clampett married Catherine Elmira E. Mashburn on 13 Sep 1860 in Macon Co, NC. She was born ca 1831/32 in Burke Co, NC, a daughter of Matthew Mashburn and Catherine Raburn.

I didn't find them on the 1870 census either.

Susan Fouts was born 11 Sep 1826 (per tombstone) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30). She moved with them to Macon Co, NC in the 1830's. She was apparently still home with her parents for the 1840 census (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

Susan Fouts married David Younce on 20 Feb 1849 in Macon Co, NC. David was born 20 May 1821 (per tombstone) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 census), a son of Andrew Younce.

On 20 Feb 1850, David Younce, Grasye Younce, William Younce, Elizabeth Gregory, Sarah Younce, and Margaret Roland, heirs of Andrew Younce, deceased, sold 100 acres to John Ledford. Elihu Barnes and Eli Rowland were witnesses, except to the signature of David Younce which was witnessed by Wesley Rowland and Jacob Fouts. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 139).

David and Susan were living with her parents for the 1850 census.

On 11 Sep 1852, Jacob Fouts Sr sold 55 acres to David Younce, for $100. Witnessed by Joseph Rowland and James Fouts. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book F page 474).

On 15 Dec 1856 David Younce received a State Land Grant for 50 acres on Iotla Creek, entered 23 Jul 1853. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 112).

David and Susan were listed on the 1860 census. Mary Evans (daughter of Zachariah Evans and Mary Waters) was living with them. She was not a blood relative to them, but was a sister of Reuben Evans, who was married to Susan's sister Rebecca Fouts.

Susan Fouts Younce died on 18 Nov 1904 and David Younce died on 18 May 1909. They are both buried at Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jacob Fouts was born 25 Jan 1830 (per Fouts book) in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30). He moved with them to Macon Co, NC in the 1830's. He was apparently still home with parents for the 1840 census (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was still at home in 1850 ("Jacob" age 21, born Ashe County).

Jacob Fouts married Sarah Ellen Younce on 22 Sep 1853 in Macon Co, NC. She was a sister to David Younce who married Jacob's sister Susan Fouts, a daughter of Andrew Younce.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon County in Burningtown Township.

For the Civil War, Jacob Fouts (and brother John) enlisted as a Private in Company A, 7th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry. He enlisted on 7 Jul 1862 as a resident of Macon County, aged 33. On 3 Aug 1863 he was transferred to Company E, 65th Regiment North Carolina Troops. He and John were captured at Jacksboro, Tennessee on 27 Aug 1863 and confined at Camp Chase, Ohio. He was transferred to Rock Island, Illinois on 22 Jan 1864. He was released after taking the oath of allegiance on 16 Jun 1865.

By ca 1868, Jacob and family moved over to Polk County, Tennessee where his sister Nellie Fouts Waters had been living. They were listed there on the 1870 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I don't have them on the 1880 or 1900 census yet. At some point they moved to Oklahoma.

John H. Fouts was born 18 Dec 1833 (per Fouts book, his tombstone just gives "1833") in Ashe Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). He moved with them to Macon Co, NC in the 1830's. He was still at home in 1850 ("John" age 18, born Ashe County).

John Fouts married Rebecca Ray on 14 Apr 1855 in Macon County. She was a daughter of John Ray and Nancy Sumner.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon County. Matilda Tanner (daughter of John Tanner and Susannah Stroud) was living with them.
