Hugh George and Celia McHaney of Pittsylvania Co, VA[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandnephew of Hugh George. Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here. Special thanks to Thomas R. George for data shared on this family, mainly from his book The George Family Record, which contained priceless data on Hugh's children and their descendants, as well as good data on much of the rest of the George family. Hugh George was born ca 1766, (or a little earlier) in either Caroline or Pittsylvania Co, VA. He is a proven son of James George and Elizabeth Noden. Their family moved to what is now Pittsylvania Co, VA around 1766, so where Hugh was born depends on exactly when he was born. I base his ca 1766 birth on his first public record being in 1787, and assuming he was at least 21 then. He was not listed on the 1782 or 1785 tax list, so that probably indicates that he turned 21 between 1785 and 1787. Hugh George was probably named for his maternal grandfather Hugh Noden (c1695-1751). Hugh George made his first appearance on the public records on the 1787 Virginia Census. He was listed in Pittsylvania Co, VA with one male over 21 (himself), and 1 horse. In May 1787, Hugh George was in court, along with William Hoskins (his brother-in-law), both were being sued by John Ramey. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 70) In August 1788, in Pittsylvania Court, Hugh George was again being sued for debt, this time by Charles A. Burdett. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 101) Hugh George was single in 1790, but he may have been listed on the 1790 census, or he might have been home with his parents still. However, we will never know, as this census was lost for the entire State of Virginia. In May 1790, in Pittsylvania Court, Hugh George, along with Thomas Ward, were being sued for debt by William Hewell. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 126) On 27 Feb 1792 Hugh George was the surety (bondsman) for the marriage bond for his sister Mary George to marry William Henderson in Pittsylvania Co, VA. On 3 Mar 1792, Hugh George (and John White,
William Henderson and W. Bardell) witnessed a deed between
James George Jr (his brother)
and William Shelton to David Allen for land on Sycamore Creek.
(Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 181) On 8 Nov 1794 Hugh George obtained a marriage bond in Pittsylvania Co, VA to marry Celia McHaney. She was listed as a daughter of Cornelius McHaney who consented to the marriage. John Turner was the bondsman. Hugh and Celia were 1st cousins, her mother being Mary George McHaney, sister of Hugh's father James George. On 23 Jun 1798 Hugh George received a Land Grant
for 150 acres on Sycamore Creek, adjoining John Camp and William Patterson
(Virginia Land Grants book 40 page 270). Hugh George was probably listed on the 1800 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for most of the state. On 25 Nov 1800, Hugh George (with Thomas Patterson, Joshua Stone, John Thurman, Nathan Thurman and Phillip Thurman) witnessed a deed between James Jordan George (his brother) of Sullivan Co, TN to William Henderson (his brother-in-law), where James J. George was selling his portion of the inheritance from their father James George, deceased. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 512). On 25 Dec 1801 Hugh George purchased 300 acres on Old Woman Creek from his brother-in-law and sister, William and Frances Hoskins of Jefferson Co, TN. This was Frances' inheritance from their father James George, deceased. Witnesses were John Thurmon, William Henderson and Nathan Thurmon. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 509). Hugh George was probably listed on the 1810 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for about half of Virginia, including Pittsylvania County. On 15 Jun 1819, Hugh George made his Will in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He named his wife and several children. I don't have it transcribed yet, but will do that soon. It was proven on 19 Jul 1819 in Pittsylvania Court. That means that Hugh George died sometime between June 15th and July 19th, 1819. I have a death date of 27 Jun 1819 listed for Hugh George, from the Winston Dalton Register. I found this either at the Pittsylvania County Court House or at the library in Chatham, I don't remember which now. However, it is also referenced in Thomas R. George's book, so he also found it (before I did, I'm sure, as his book was published about 3 years before I even began researching, though I didn't discover his book until years later). Celia McHaney George was still living in 1820, but not listed on the 1820 census. I suspect she was with her son James H. George in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Celia McHaney George died around February of 1830 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. (Per Thomas R. George). ChildrenHugh George and Celia McHaney had nine children, several of which are proven by the Will of Hugh George (1819) and the births of all of them (but one, I think) were recorded in the Winton Dalton Register. Cornelius McHaney George (1795-1880) Cornelius McHaney George was born 19 Aug 1795 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. His birth date was recorded in the Winston Dalton Register. I'm not sure if there is a primary source for his middle name being "McHaney", but his initial was "M", and it seems almost certain he was named for his maternal grandfather Cornelius McHaney. Cornelius M. George married Ann Dove on 20 Mar 1815 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. They had thirteen children. He was named in his father's Will (1819) as his son "Cornelius M. George". Cornelius M. I haven't done much research on this family after the 1850 timeframe, but from Thomas R. George's book, and from the marriage register, much more data is available. On 25 Sep 1862 Cornelius M. George married Rosa McClanahan in Pittsylvania Co, VA. She died sometime before 1877. On 20 Mar 1877 Cornelius M. George married Susan Roark. She died sometime before 1879. On 2 Jan 1879 Cornelius M. George married Amanda Blankenship. Cornelius M. George died on 26 Feb 1880 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. I'm not sure when Amanda, his last wife, died. Mildred George was born 13 Aug 1797 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Her birth date is recorded in the Winston Dalton register. Mildred George married John Graves on 9 May 1817 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. She was named in her father's Will (1819) as daughter "Milly" and in another place in the Will, she and her husband John Graves were named as "John Graves and wife Milly". I have no additional data on them. Thomas R. George reports in his book that this family may have moved to nearby Patrick Co, VA, then later to Missouri. I haven't followed up on that yet. James H. George was born 18 May 1799 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. His birth date is recorded in the Winston Dalton register. James H. George was named in his father's Will (1819) as "my son James H. George". James H. George was listed on the 1820 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA near his brother Cornelius M. George. Mary George was born 13 Sep 1801 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Her birth date is recorded in the Winston Dalton register. She was not named in her father's will, so probably died young. John George was born ca 1802/04 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. His birth date is not recorded in the Winston Dalton register. John was named in his father's Will (1819) as son "John". John was probably residing with his brother James H. George for the 1820 census. John George married Sarah Hatchett on 30 Dec 1823 (per Winston Dalton Register), in Pittsylvania Co, VA. John George was listed on the 1830 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but I don't have that listing yet. I have no data on him after 1830. According to Thomas R. George's book, John may have moved to Patrick Co, VA, then to Illinois. Celia George was born 13 Sep 1806 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Her birth date is recorded in the Winston Dalton register. Celia was named in her father's Will (1819) as daughter "Cela" or "Lela". Celia was apparently with her brother James H. George for the 1820 census. According to Thomas R. George's book, Celia married Richard Turner. I have no additional data on them yet. Elizabeth George was born 25 Mar 1809 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Her birth date is recorded in the Winston Dalton register. Elizabeth was named in her father's Will (1819) as daughter "Betsy". Elizabeth was apparently with her brother James H. George for the 1820 census. Elizabeth married Alexander Duncan on 14 Oct 1830 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Apparently, Alexander Duncan died around the year 1850 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. The 1850 census shows Elizabeth as head of household, apparently widowed.
