James George and Elizabeth Noden of Caroline and Pittsylvania Co, VA

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of James George and Elizabeth Noden.

Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here.

James George was born ca 1734 in Caroline Co, VA (or possibly in Essex Co, VA). He is a proven son of John George and Mary Jordan, who owned land in both Caroline and Essex Co, VA in 1734, so I'm not sure where they were living about that time. James George was named in the Will of John George (now lost), and also in family correspondence between him and his father and his brothers, several of which clearly establish their relationship.

I base James George's birth (of circa 1734) on his first public record being in 1755, and assuming he was at least 21 then.

I have abstracted numerous court records in Caroline Co, VA for James George, but for some reason, I can't find my original references for them, so I can't quote book and page number, but I will retrieve that information as soon as I can relocate it.

On 13 Jun 1755, in Caroline Court, James George was in court with a petition against Frances Long.

On 13 Apr 1758, James George was appointed a constable in Caroline Co, VA in the position vacated by Stephen Lowe.

Sometime around circa 1759, James George married Elizabeth Noden in Caroline Co, VA. It is possible that Elizabeth had been residing with the George family, as after she was orphaned, she first chose her brother Charles Noden as guardian, but later John George (James' father) was her guardian.

On 14 Feb 1760, James George was replaced as constable by Thomas Watkins.

On 14 Mar 1761 James George was named in a Caroline court record. This is complex, but here it is. The case was Charles Noden (James' brother-in-law) with an action of debt against John Thilman and Robert Mickelberry (both are James' cousins). The case was brought by Edmund Byne, assignee of James George, who was assignee of Richard Woolfolk, assignee of Charles Noden. Charles Noden lived outside of Caroline Co, VA at this time, hence the need for having someone sue on his behalf.

James was next in the court house on 9 Jul 1761 when he was charged with Trespassing, Assault and Battery by Richard Dicken. The Jury found James not guilty.

The following month James was again in court for on 14 Aug 1761 he was charging William and Ann Whitlock with slander. The Jury found for the defendants.

On 12 Mar 1762 it was ordered that James George, the "younger", be overseer of a road in Caroline County. This was the only reference I could find suggesting their was another James George in the county. I don't know if ours was the younger or the older. The "younger" James was probably James Mayo George, son of Richard George

James George was in court several times over the next two years, as both plaintiff and defendant.

On 15 Sep 1764 James was charged with an action of debt by Anderson Lipscomb, and James George did not show up to be tried.

The following month it was ordered on 11 Oct 1764 that Daniel Thilman pay James George for one days attendance and for 70 miles of travel. This was to reimburse James George for testifying on Thilman's behalf. It is obvious by this and James George's no shows at court, that he had moved away from Caroline County. He may have gone to Pittsylvania Co, VA by then (still part of Halifax County until 1767).

Cases dated 16 Feb 1765, and 12 Apr 1765 also had James George not appearing. He must have returned to Caroline a few times for on 15 Jun 1765 he appeared in court.

On 12 Sep 1765 he testified as a witness to a deed between John and Ursula George to John Gatewood. Ursula Dudley George was the second wife of John George, his first wife having been Mary Jordan.

A case dated 12 Jun 1766 had Ann Fristoe, Executrix of Robert Fristoe, deceased, in court against James George. Reuben George entered himself as special bail on behalf of James. Reuben was James George's brother.

The last court date for James that I have located was on 12 Jun 1767 when he was again charged with an action of debt by Ann Fristoe, and was also charged by Thomas Burke.

James and Elizabeth moved from Caroline to Pittsylvania Co, VA and settled on the branches of Allen's Creek. This land was Halifax County until Pittsylvania County was created in 1767. The border must have ran through their property for Allen's Creek is on the County Line.

James George was first mentioned in Pittsylvania Court records on 27 Nov 1767 when John George, James' brother, was charged with an action of debt by David Caldwell. James George presented security for John George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 21).

On 26 Feb 1768 Charles Rice brought a petition against James George (not sure why). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 38).

On the same day (26 Feb 1768) it was ordered that Charles Rice pay Frances Luck for four days attendance in his petition against James George. In other words, Luck was a witness in the case, and Charles had to pay him for his time. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 39).

On 24 Jun 1768 James George was sued by Joseph Dejernat (Dejarnatt) for Trespassing, Assault and Battery! (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 62).

On 25 Jun 1768 James George and his brother John George were jointly sued by Robert Caldwell for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 66).

On 26 Aug 1768 James George sued Joseph Dejernat (not sure why, but this was the same person who sued him a few months earlier). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 74).

On 28 Jan 1769 James George of Pittsylvania Co, VA, sold Benjamin Lankford (of same place) two Negroes. Witnesses were Edmund King, Joseph Farris, Abraham Shelton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 1 page 457).

On 24 Jul 1769 James Farris brought a petition against James George (not sure why). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 106).

On 29 Jul 1769 James George sued his brother John George for debt (unless there was another John George in the county). The case was dismissed. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 121).

On 29 Jul 1769 James George sued Thomas Anthony for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 228).

On 26 Aug 1769 Samuel Wright sued James George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 142).

On 26 Aug 1769 Thomas Farris sued both James George and John George with a petition (no details). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 146).

James George was listed on the 1770 Tax list in Pittsylvania Co, VA, and taxed for 1 white poll (himself), and 4 blacks, and no land.

On 28 Jul 1770 James George and Benjamin Lankford were jointly sued for debt by Robert Caldwell. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 217).

On the same date (28 Jul 1770) James George and Benjamin Lankford were jointly sued for debt by Joseph Dejernat. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 218).

Also on the same date (28 Jul 1770), James and Benjamin were sued by Charles Rice for debt. Also sued by Thomas Farris for debt, and also by James Farris (each in a separate case). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 218).

On 31 Aug 1770 Edward Baber brought a petition against James George (no details). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 245).

On 27 Sep 1770 James George (among others) was appointed an Ensign in the Pittsylvania County Militia. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 249).

On 28 Jun 1771 Frances Luck brought a petition against James George and John George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 301).

On 28 Jun 1771 Miles Barrot, assignee of Frances Silver, brought a petition against James George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 302).

On the same date (28 Jun 1771) Joseph Lankford also brought a petition against James George, as did Robert Weakly and Elisha Dyer and Isaac Clement, each in separate cases. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 302).

On 27 Sep 1771 Field and Call (merchants) assignees of David George sued James George for debt. David George was a merchant from Charlotte Co, VA and as far as I know, was not related to the James George family. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 342).

On 1 Mar 1773 James George received a 400 acre patent for land on Allen's Creek in Pittsylvania Co, VA adjoining his own land, and that of William Bowman. (Virginia Patents Book 41 page 221).

On 26 Mar 1773, John Esdale, Administrator for Edward Booker, deceased, sued Richard Perryman, James George and John George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 2 page 125).

On 23 Jul 1773 John McKenny brought a petition against James George and John Butler. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 2 page 235).

On 18 Aug 1774 James George and wife Elizabeth George of Pittsylvania Co, VA sold land in Halifax Co, VA to John Butler for 40 pounds, for 380 acres. The land was described as part of a patent to James George dated 1 Mar 1773 (see above) part in Halifax, part in Pittsylvania, on both sides of Allen's Creek, bounded by William Bowman and John East.  The deed was signed by James George. Elizabeth George relinquished her dower rights. There were no witnesses. (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 326).

On 25 Apr 1775 William Spragins and wife Frances sold James George 68 acres on the south side of the South Fork of Allen's Creek. The land was bounded by the said James George and Joshua Stone. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 185).

On 27 Sep 1775, James George (among others) was made a Lieutenant in the Pittsylvania County Militia. This was 5 years to the day from when he was appointed an Ensign. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 293).

On 4 Dec 1775 John George of Carolina Co, VA (James' father) sold James George 200 acres on the South side of the North Fork of Allen's Creek in Pittsylvania Co, VA, for 60 pounds. The land was bounded by Luke Smith, John Pemberton, Peter Bowman, and William Bowman Jr. Witnesses were Benjamin Lankford, Jonadab George (James' cousin) and Nathaniel Pope. There is a possibility that this deed was not from James' father John, but from his brother John George instead, if he had moved back to Caroline Co, VA. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 179).

On 25 Apr 1776 James George and John George (and Benjamin Lankford and John Buckley) witnessed a deed from Joseph Farris to Joseph Farris Jr for land on Allen's Creek. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 199).

The American Revolution (also called the War of Independence) began in 1776 and lasted until 1781. I have not found any record showing James George participated in the war in any way. I've often been asked if descendants could get into the DAR or SAR via the James George family, but I've found no proof that he served. James George was in the County Militia in 1775, but I've found nothing else on him during the war years (pertaining to military service, that is).

In 1777 James George signed the Oath of Allegiance to the State of Virginia in Pittsylvania Co, VA.

On 2 Aug 1777 James George of Pittsylvania Co, VA sold 20 acres on Allen's Creek to Joshua Stone. The land was in both Pittsylvania and Halifax Co, VA, joining lands of John Oliver, John Ferris, and John Megregor. Witnesses were Benjamin Lankford, R. Ferguson, John Oliver and James Roberts. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 399).

On 15 Nov 1779 James George received a Land Grant of 329 acres in Pittsylvania Co, VA on Allen's Creek adjoining Lankford and Pemberton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Grants Book B page 73 I'm not sure where I found this).

James George was listed on the 1782 Tax List in Pittsylvania Co, VA with 5 whites and 3 blacks. The 5 whites would be James, his wife Elizabeth, their children James Jordan George, Hugh George and Mary George. Their oldest daughter Frances was already married by this time.

James George was listed on the 1785 Tax List in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He still had 5 whites (same people as in 1782), and was listed with 1 dwelling house, and 6 other buildings.

James George Sr was listed on the 1787 Virginia Census in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He had one male over 21 (himself), he had 2 blacks age 16 and up, one black under 16, 3 horses, and 15 cattle.

James George was probably listed on the 1790 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for the entire State of Virginia.

On 27 Feb 1792 James George consented to the marriage of his daughter Mary George to William Henderson in Pittsylvania Co, VA. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Marriage Bonds).

On 16 Jul 1792 James George and wife Elizabeth George sold 130 acres on Allen's Creek to Benjamin Gosney, land bounded by Joseph Farris, Benjamin Lankford, James Henderson and William Keates.  (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 Page 278).

On the same date (16 Jul 1792), Elizabeth George, wife of James George relinquished her dower rights to the above land. She was listed on the deed as being "unable to conveniently travel", so apparently the clerk went to her to get her relinquishments. This probably indicates that she was in poor health. This deed was not filed with the above record, but was separate and carried the date 15 Feb 1794. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 10 Page 163).

17 Sep 1792 James George sold 10 acres on Allen's Creek to William Keatt of Halifax Co, VA. Witnesses were Will Shelton, William Short, and Charles Keatt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 Page 344).

On 29 Oct 1792 James George Sr purchased 224 acres on Sycamore Creek from William Baber and Frederick Shelton. This signified a move from the Allen's Creek area to another area in the county to the north west of there. Witnesses were William Anderson, Hugh George (James' son), Thomas Dalton, William Smith and Thomas Dalton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 Page 349).

On 26 Aug 1796 James George received a grant for 1,050 acres on Sycamore and Old Woman's Creek in Pittsylvania Co, VA bordering Patterson, Bybee and Keesee. (Virginia Land Grants Book 34 page 549).

On 23 Jun 1798 James George received a grant for 90 acres on the Head of Camp Branch in Pittsylvania Co, VA. (Virginia Land Grants Book 40 page 267).

James George made his Will on 19 Dec 1798 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. It is filed in Pittsylvania Co, VA Deeds and Wills Book 11. Here is a transcript:

In the name of God Amen, I JAMES GEORGE of the County of Pittsylvania being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory. Thanks be given unto God, calling to mind the Mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and Ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried with a decent Christian Burial at the discretion of my Executors nothing (doubting) but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and as to asking such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give and demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

Beginning on the Cedar branch on Thurmans line running straight to my lower Corner for compliment and at the decease of my Wife, I also give the said MARY HENDERSON one Negro girl named ROSE to her and her Heirs forever.

Secondly I give to my beloved son JAMES JORDAN GEORGE three hundred acres of land beginning on BIBEY'S line near the Wolf branch to run South West about the middle of HENDERSON'S line, thence a North course and corner for compliment down to DALTON'S line which land I give to the said JAMES J GEORGE his Heirs and Assignees forever.

Thirdly I give to my beloved Daughter FRANCES HOSKINS Three hundred acres of land lying on JAMES JORDAN GEORGE'S and HENDERSON'S lines. Thence running to the Mountain, thence round to the beginning for compliment, which land I give to the said FRANCES HOSKINS and her heirs forever.

Fourthly I give to my beloved Son H UGH GEORGE the plantation laying on the Camp branch to begin at the old Mill Path a straight line down between the two fields to his new Survey. I also give my said Son HUGH GEORGE one Negro Man named HOLIDAY to be his at my Wifes decease to him and his heirs forever.

Fifthly I give to my beloved Wife ELIZABETH GEORGE during her life the place where we now live with all the balance of Land joining thereunto and after her decease I give the said Land and premises to my Son HUGH GEORGE his Heirs and assigns forever. I also lend my beloved wife ELIZABETH GEORGE all my Stock of Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Hogs, also five Slaves namely GOLIAH, HOLIDAY, LUCY, ROSE and ANNEKEY during her life and at her decease my Will and desire is that my three Negroes GOLIAH, LUCEY & ANNEKEY be divided between my Daughter FRANCES HOSKINS and J AMES J GEORGE. Also my Will and desire is after my wifes decease all the Stocks of every kind shall be equally divided between my four children.

Given under my hand this 19th day of December 1798. I also constitute and appoint my beloved wife and my son HUGH GEORGE Executors to this my last Will and Testament. In presence of:

NATHAN THURMAN SR JAMES GEORGE (seal)

NATHAN THURMAN JR

JOSEPH (x) BYBEE

At a court held for Pittsylvania County June the 17th 1799, The foregoing last Will and Testament of JAMES GEORGE deceased was presented in Court by ELIZABETH GEORGE Executrix and HUGH GEORGE Executor therein named and proved by the Oaths of NATHAN THURMAN and NATHAN THURMAN JR two of the witnesses thereby ordered that the same be recorded and the said Executrix and Executor having first taken the Oath by Law prescribed and together with the said NATHAN THURMAN and NATHAN THURMAN JR their securities entered into bond in the penalty of ten thousand dollars conditioned as the Law directs and acknowledged the same on their Motion Certificates is granted them for obtaining a Probate of the said Will in due form.

Teste WILL TUNSTALL CPC

Since the Will was proven on 17 Jun 1799, we can conclude that James George died sometime between 19 Dec 1798 and 17 Jun 1799, probably closer to the later date.

We don't know when Elizabeth Noden George died. She might have been listed on the 1800 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but unfortunately this census was lost for the State of Virginia. The 1810 census was also lost for many counties, including Pittsylvania.

James and Elizabeth are probably buried somewhere on their property on Sycamore or Old Woman's Creek in Pittsylvania Co, VA.

Children

James George and wife Elizabeth Noden had 4 children, as proven by James' Will (1798). This was a small family for that time, so it is possible there were other children who died young.

Frances George (1760-after 1830)

James Jordan George (1761-1824)

Hugh George (c1766-1819)

Mary "Polly" George (c1772-1830)

Frances George was born 30 May 1760 in Caroline Co, VA (Birth date from Hoskins Family Bible record, shared with me by Sue Wright). Frances was probably named for her father's sister Frances George (married Benjamin Graves).

Frances moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA with her parents while still young. She married William Hoskins there ca 1775.

William Hoskins probably would have been listed on the 1790 census, though unfortunately, that entire census is lost for Virginia.

At some point (probably in the 1790's), the family moved to Jefferson Co, TN and settled there.

Frances Hoskins was named in her father's Will (1798) and was left 300 acres of James George's land in Pittsylvania Co, VA

William Hoskins probably would have been listed on the 1800 census in Jefferson Co, TN, but unfortunately, the entire 1800 census for Tennessee was lost.

On 25 Dec 1801 William Hoskins and wife Frances Hoskins of Jefferson Co, TN, sold the 300 acres she had inherited from her father James George. They sold it to her brother Hugh George. Witnesses were John Thurman, William Henderson, and Nathan Thurman. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 509).

Frances George relinquished her dower rights to the above land on 21 Nov 1804. She was examined privately by Edward George and John Lehon, Esquires, of Jefferson Co, TN. (Edward George is not a relative, as far as I know). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 227)

William Hoskins probably would have been listed on the 1810 census in Jefferson Co, TN, but unfortunately, the entire 1810 census for Tennessee was lost.

William Hoskins probably would have been listed on the 1820 census in Jefferson Co, TN, but unfortunately, the 1820 census for all of Eastern Tennessee was lost, which included Jefferson County.

William Hoskins was listed on the 1830 census in Jefferson Co, TN. Many of their children, and other relatives were nearby.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Daughter? Daughter-in-law?

I haven't yet searched for this family in 1840 or 1850 census records, or other Jefferson County records.

Sue Wright graciously shared a Family Bible Record that documented the names and birth dates for William and Frances and their 14 children. I have not attempted to trace this family beyond what is listed here. I need to do that at some point.

James Jordan George was born 24 Dec 1761 in Caroline Co, VA. James Jordan George came to Pittsylvania Co, VA with his parents while still small. James was apparently named for his father James, and "Jordan" after his paternal grandmother Mary Jordan, wife of John George.

He went west to Sullivan Co, TN around 1789 and married Elizabeth Pemberton there. The James George family was associated with a Pemberton family in Pittsylvania Co, VA, and it might be the same family, some of whom moved to Sullivan Co, TN.

James Jordan George was named in his father's Will (1798).

James J. George's wife Elizabeth died in 1802, and he married again in 1805 to Nancy Dugger.

See his own page for additional information.

Hugh George was born ca 1766 in Caroline or Pittsylvania Co, VA. Hugh was probably named for his maternal grandfather Hugh Noden.

Hugh George was the only member of this family to remain in VA, while his siblings all moved to eastern Tennessee.

Hugh George married Celia McHaney (his 1st cousin) on 8 Nov 1794 in Pittsylvania Co, VA.

Hugh George was named in his father's Will (1798).

See his own page for additional information.

Mary "Polly" George was born ca 1772 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. She was possibly named for her father's sister Mary George (married Cornelius McHaney).

On 27 Feb 1792 William Henderson obtained a marriage bond in Pittsylvania Co, VA to marry Mary George. She was listed as a daughter of James George, who gave his consent. Hugh George (her brother) was the security (bondsman).

Mary George Henderson was named in her father's Will (1799) as daughter "Mary Henderson" and was left 350 acres and a Negro girl named Rose.

William Henderson was probably listed on the 1800 census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for the entire State of Virginia.

On 25 Nov 1800 James Jordan George (Frances' brother) of Sullivan Co, TN sold William Henderson his 300 acres that he inherited from James George. This land was on Sycamore and Old Wolf Creek. Witnesses were Thomas Patterson, Hugh George, Joshua Stone, John Thurman, Nathan Thurman and Phillip Thurman. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 512).

On 25 Dec 1801 William Henderson (and John Thurmon and Nathan Thurmon) witnessed a deed between William Hoskins and wife Frances Hoskins of Jefferson Co, TN to Hugh George, where they sold their inheritance. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 509).

On 19 Sep 1803 William Henderson and wife Polly Henderson of Pittsylvania Co, VA, sold 650 acres on Old Woman's Creek to John Glass. This was her 350 acres inheritance as well as the 300 acres purchased from James Jordan George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 13 page 414).

The above deed probably represents the timeframe when the William Henderson family moved west to Jefferson Co, TN.

William Henderson was probably listed on the 1810 census in Jefferson Co, TN, but unfortunately this census was lost for all of Tennessee.

On 18 Apr 1814 William Henderson of Jefferson Co, TN gave power of Attorney to John Hoskins of Pittsylvania Co, VA. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 18 page 434).

On 24 May 1814 William Henderson made his Will in Jefferson Co, TN. He named his wife Mary, and sons James, Noden, William, John, Charlie and Thomas Henderson, and daughters Elizabeth Ann Perryman, Francis Henderson, Ann Henderson and Mary Henderson. (Jefferson Co, TN Wills and Estates Book 2 page 64).

William Henderson died between 24 May 1814 and 15 Sep 1814 in Jefferson Co, TN.

On 15 Sep 1814, an estate sale was held for the estate of William Henderson, deceased. (Jefferson Co, TN Wills and Estates Book 2 page 75).

Mary George Henderson was probably listed on the 1820 census in Jefferson Co, TN, but unfortunately, this census was lost for all of eastern TN.

I didn't find Mary listed on the 1830 census. She died that same year, or at least before 14 Dec 1830.

On 14 Dec 1830, an Inventory was returned for the estate of Mary Henderson, deceased. (Jefferson Co, TN Wills and Estates Book 3 page 128).

I need to do additional Jefferson Co, TN research on this family.
