My Grant FamilyWilliam Grant (c1720-1795) and Mary (---) of Virginia (perhaps Louisa County) and North Carolina (Tryon and Rutherford) IntroductionFor 10 years I thought I was the only one researching the Grants in Western NC. Then one day I heard from Ollie Clark (now deceased) of Alabama. She was from my line of Grants and she had been researching them awhile, and told me of Hiram Grogan who also had been researching them awhile. Ollie shared a small booklet with me on the Grant family that Hiram Grogan had prepared. With only a few minor exceptions, his data and mine were in agreement. It was quite satisfying to find out that, first of all, I wasn't the only one researching the family, and secondly, that my data was now confirmed by someone else's independent research. I learned from other sources that Ruth Steelman had done alot of research on our Grants, but she passed away just a day or so after I first wrote to her. To this day, I still haven't seen her research, so I'm not sure what she may have that I haven't yet found. Frank Block was my next contact, he and I shared considerable information back and forth for about two years. Since then, I have heard from many Grant researchers who are from the William and Mary Grant line of Rutherford Co, NC. They have each shared some data with me, some had little or nothing to share, but I'm glad to hear from them anyway. So, I'd like to give a special thanks to several people who have been of great help to me on this family: Miss Ollie Clark (deceased), Hiram Grogan, Frank Block, Jim Grant, Don Grant Jr, and Gene Brakebill. Check the researcher list for the names of others who may have contributed. I'd also like to thank several close family members who have helped, especially when I was just starting out: My Great Grandfather Marvin R. Grant (deceased), my grandmother Luella George Grant (deceased), my grandfather Garland S. Grant and my father Alan Grant. Also to all of my other relatives who answered my endless questions about the family. My Grant ancestorsMy earliest known ancestor William Grant could be from Scotland but we don't know that for sure. The earliest record we have for him is dated 1771 in Tryon (now Rutherford) Co, NC. We think that William Grant lived in Louisa or Albemarle Co, VA before coming to NC because his brother-in-law David Dalton came from Albemarle, and several of his children (David's) married in Louisa Co, VA before moving to Rutherford Co, NC in the 1780's. William Grant's descendants were found in several places by 1850 especially western NC (Rutherford, Henderson, McDowell, Buncombe, Haywood, Macon, Cherokee) and east TN (Blount, Monroe) and north GA (Gilmer). I have set up several web pages, each containing documentation, for different branches of this family. Follow the links below for more information.
