John Patton Grant was born 21 Dec 1845 (per tombstone) in Macon
Co, NC, somewhere near the Cowee community. He was probably named for
Colonel John Patton of Buncombe Co, NC who was well known and popular in
Western NC. Although I'm related to John Patton via another branch of my
family, John Patton Grant was not related to him as far as I know.
John Patton Grant was a son of
Thomas B. Grant and Mary Miller. This is proven by the 1850 and 1860
census and other records.
John P. Grant had a first cousin, once removed, of the same name.
This other
John Patton Grant was about 4 years younger, and although they lived
very near each other, they did not attempt to distinguish themselves by
any means for the public records. Both are found listed as "John Grant"
or "John P. Grant" in the various records. The only way I've found to distinguish
them is by the context of the documents I found them on. I may have
confused their records in some cases, but for the most part I think I
have them sorted out correctly. The other John lived on and near Wesser
Creek and Silver Mine Creek, so that is the opposite shore of the
Nantahala River from where this John Patton Grant lived.
John's father Thomas died the same year John was born (1845), so he
was raised without a father. He was 14 years old when his mother
remarried in 1861.
John was home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census in Macon
Co, NC ("John" age 5, born Macon).
John was home with his widowed mother for the 1860 census in Macon
Co, NC ("John P., age 14, born Macon).
There is a land grant for a John Grant dated 1860. Although he
was only 15 at the time, John Grant received a land grant on 29 Dec
1860. The land was entered on 15 Aug 1853 (when he was only 8 years
old!). I believe this was legal due to him being an orphan, and the land
was probably entered by his mother but in his name. The land was 100
acres on the East Side of the Nantahala River on Silver Creek (present
Swain Co, NC). It is entirely possible that this land grant was not for
this same John Grant. The other John Patton Grant lived in that area
later on, but I don't know how he could have qualified for a land grant
at that age. It is possible that some other John Grant passed through
the area. This grant was recorded again in Swain County on 30 Dec 1881.
(Macon Co, NC Land Grants # 2445, Entry #
7471, Book 164 page 264 and Swain Co, NC Deed Book 3 page 92).
The family moved to the area near Birdtown (present Swain County) in
the 1860's, which was then part of Jackson County.
John P. Grant married Darthula Jane Evans on 5 Nov 1868 in
Jackson Co, NC. The marriage record lists him as "John Grant" and her as
"N. C. Ivens". I'm not sure why her initials were given this way, for
every other record shows her as "Darthula J." or "Darthula Jane". The
marriage register is all that is left, and the actual marriage record
may have given her name differently.
Darthula Jane Evans (called "Dorthy" on some records) was born 11 Sep
1843 (per tombstone) in Buncombe Co, NC on Avery Creek (south west of
Asheville), daughter of
William Evans and Phebe Graham.
Darthula was home with her parents for the 1850 census in Buncombe
Co, NC, and home with them for the 1860 census in Jackson Co, NC.
John and Darthula and family were listed on the 1870 census in
Jackson Co, NC in Deep Creek Township. They were just a few houses from
his mother and step-father. They apparently were all in the area near
Birdtown.

In 1871, Swain County was created from the section of Jackson County
where they were living.
On 10 Feb 1874 John P. Grant witnessed the Marriage of Merrit M.
Graham (Darthula's first cousin) and Martha Jenkins in Swain Co, NC.
On 9 Feb 1875 John P. Grant witnessed the marriage of William W.
Evans (Darthula's brother) and Martha Fuller in Swain Co, NC.
On 29 Jan 1876 John Grant purchased 50 acres from Eli and Nancy M.
Collins on the Tennessee River, for $100. Witnesses were J. J. Constant,
and A. G. Mashburn. (Swain Co, NC Deed
Book 1 page 383).
On 9 Sep 1879, John P. Grant witnessed an affidavit filed by his aunt
Mary Morris Grant, widow of
Charles Grant for a Widows Pension Application. He signed as "J. P.
Grant" age 34 (which puts his birth at ca 1844/45, so we know it his him
and not his cousin John P. Grant (1848).
John and Darthula and family were listed on the 1880 census in Swain
Co, NC in Nantahala Township. Darthula's sister Fannie Evans Lequire was
just a few households away.

On 16 Aug 1883, John and Darthula sold land on the Nantahala River in
Swain County to E. Everett of Swain, James L. Robinson of Macon Co, NC,
Theo Poole of Martin Co, NC, and Robert Furman of Buncombe Co, NC for
$200. The land was described as adjoining Sutherland and others. I
didn't see the acreage listed, and I don't know where they obtained this
land. It should be noted that Darthula's father died just about a year
before this, so this could be land inherited from his estate. The deed
was signed by "John Grant" and "D. J. Grant" (who made her mark). The
deed was witnessed by only one person: "S. J. Grant". I'm not sure who
this was. This could be their oldest daughter Shuthelia G. Grant,
though I'm not sure if it is or not.
(Swain Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 311).
On 11 Mar 1885 John P. Grant and D. J. Grant sold 50 acres on Mills
Creek to Joseph Ammons. It was described as Tract # 2040. This is the
same land that was granted to John's mother Mary in 1856. I found no
record of her transferring it to John though, and she was still alive in
1885. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 8 page 80).
On 4 Oct 1887 John P. Grant and wife D. J. Grant gave the Cumberland
Valley and Unaka Railroad a 100 foot right of way through their 50 acre
home tract on the Tennessee River. (Swain
Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 29).
On 19 Nov 1888, John P. Grant purchased 68 acres from N. B. Thompson,
agent for J. A. Thompson, on Alarka Creek and Hickory Nut Gap, bordering
Evans, Dehart, Cathey and Welch. (Swain
Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 327).
On 19 Nov 1888, John P. Grant and wife D. J. Grant sold 50 acres to
John Jenkins, being on the Tennessee River bordering Cunningham and
Hitchcock, being part of Tract # 1325. This may be the same land
purchased 29 Jan 1876 from Eli Collins.
(Swain Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 53).
John and Darthula and family were listed on the 1900 census in Swain
Co, NC in Nantahala Township. They were next door to daughter Mary Grant
Graham and her family. Darthula's brother William Evans was just a few
houses away.

In 1907, Albert Graham of Buncombe Co, NC died. His estate division
was huge for some reason, and the papers in his Estate file named every
known heir of
Jeffrey Graham (Darthula Evans Grant's grandfather). Among the many
heirs named were "Dorthula Grant and husband John Grant".
(Buncombe Co, NC Loose Estates, Albert
Graham-1907, NC Archives).
Sometime around this time (ca 1907-1909), John and Darthula and
family moved to the Gum Log area of Union Co, GA, taking about half of
their children with them, others remaining in Swain County, NC. I don't
know why they moved to Union Co, GA, as they had no relatives there as
far as I know. One reason might have been the fact that in 1901 through
1903, three of their daughters had children born out of wedlock, and
perhaps they decided getting out of the area would help them avoid
repeats of the situation. That is just a theory though, I really have no
idea why they moved.
On 31 Dec 1909, J. P. Grant and wife Darthula Grant of Union Co, GA,
sold 68 acres in Swain Co, NC to J. R. Carson. The land was described as
being in Nantahala Township on Alarka Creek and Hickory Nut Gap, joining
W. P. Roberts,
J. D. Patterson, and on the lines of Cathey and Evans. Witness was
D. F. Graham (John and Darthula's son-in-law).
(Swain Co, NC Deed Book 36 page 165).
John and Darthula and family were listed on the 1910 census in Union
Co, GA in Gum Log Township. They were next door to the
Noah W. Gilbert family.

Oct 1917, age 71. He is buried beside Darthula. His stone gives birth
and death dates, and name as "J. P. Grant". |

Jane Evans. John and Darthula raised nine children, and several
grandchildren also. Their children are all proven by the 1870 through

Shuthelia Guscilla
Grant was born September 1869 (per 1870 census) or February 1860
(per 1900 census). The 1900 census record is way out of line with her
other records. She was born in Jackson (now Swain) Co, NC. I have no
clue as to the origin of her unusual name. I've never seen these names
anywhere else. She was called "Thelia" apparently.
Thelia was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Shuthula G."
age 8 months, born Sept), and home in 1880 ("Shuthula G." age 10).
She married Thomas Washington Hutchens on 3 Sep 1885 in Swain
Co, NC. Their marriage record gave them as "Thomas Hutchens" age 24, of
Swain, and "Theely Grant" age 15 of Swain. They were married at J. P.
Grant's home (her father).
Thomas Washington Hutchens was born 27 Apr 1860 (per tombstone) in
NC, but I don't know what county. I have not found him on the 1860 or
1870 or 1880 census records yet, he was not in the Swain County area
then. I don't know who his parents were.
Tom and Thelia were listed on the 1900 census in Swain Co, NC in
Forney Creek Township. Both Tom and Thelia's ages were wrong by 10 years
(too old), and so I consider this entire record to be suspect, and was
probably reported by someone else, other than them. Perhaps a neighbor
gave the data to the census taker, or one of the children who didn't
know everyone's correct age and birth dates.

Mary Caroline Grant was born August 1871 (per
1900 census) in Swain Co, NC. She was possibly named in part for her
grandmother Mary Miller Grant, and possibly for her aunt Mary Evans
also. I believe that she was known as "Callie" to family members though
usually listed as "Mary" or "Mary C." on most records. Callie was home
with her parents for the 1880 census ("Mary C." age 8) in Swain Co, NC.
On 4 Jun 1891, Callie Grant witnessed the marriage of her sister
Isabell to L. C. Duvall in Swain Co, NC.
On 11 Mar 1897, Callie Grant married her cousin Daniel Francis
Graham in Swain Co, NC. Their marriage record gave a great deal of
information. He was listed as "Daniel Francis Graham", age 24, of Swain
Co, NC, son of "James & Laura M. Pinner", father living, mother dead, of
Buncombe Co, NC. Callie was listed as "Mary Caroline Grant" age 25, of
Swain, daughter of "John A. and Darthula Grant", both living, of Swain
Co, NC. Married by C. C. Bryson, JP at C. C. Bryson's house in Nantahala
Township. Witnesses were Z. V. Welch, A. C. Byars, and M. T. Brendle.
Daniel Francis Graham was born 13 Apr 1872 (per tombstone) in
Buncombe Co, NC in the Avery Creek area. He was a son of
James R. Graham and Laura Ann Pinner (who were not married). He was
born out of wedlock, and he was raised by James R. Graham, but it isn't
clear if James was actually his father or not, but it seems likely that
he was the father.
Daniel and wife Callie were 1st cousins 1 time removed to one
another. Daniel's grandfather was
Jeffrey Graham, who was Callie's Great Grandfather.
Daniel and Callie were listed on the 1900 census in Swain Co, NC next
door to her parents in Nantahala Township.

In the Loose Estate records of Albert Graham who died in 1907 in
Buncombe Co, NC, Daniel and Callie are both named as heirs to his
estate. The records are extensive and name many of the heirs of Jeffrey
Graham. In one paper they are named as "Daniel Graham and wife Callie
Graham". In another paper, Daniel and his brother Charles Graham are
both named as heirs of James Graham, and as such are entitled to 1/7 of
1/2 portion of the estate. (Buncombe Co,
NC Loose Estates, Albert Graham-1907, NC Archives).
The above estate was divided so many ways that it was sold, and the
money distributed to the heirs, so no land was actually transferred to
them.
On 31 Dec 1909 D. F. Graham witnessed a deed between J. P. and
Darthula Grant to J. R. Carson. (Swain

Daniel Francis Graham died on 17 Jul 1926 (per tombstone) in Swain
Co, NC. He was buried at the Judson Cemetery. This cemetery was flooded
when Fontana Lake was opened. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority)
Cemetery removal records say that his grave was moved to the Lauada
Cemetery, however, it was apparently moved to the Guge Cemetery in
Graham Co, NC instead, as that is where it is found.
I don't know when Mary Caroline Grant Graham died, nor where she is
buried.
Daniel and Callie had at least 10 children, all are deceased now. I
spoke by phone to one of their sons, Charles Golden "Goldie" Graham
(1907-1994), and my dad knew several of Goldie's children when they all
lived near each other in Arden, NC growing up. |
|
Isabell Emma Grant was
born 1 Aug 1873 (per tombstone) in Swain Co, NC. She seems to have been
named for, in part, her aunt Isabell Levina Grant Sherrill. I'm not sure
if "Emma" is her full middle name, or if that is short for "Emaline". If
so, she was probably also named in part for her aunt Emaline Evans.
She was home with her parents for the 1880 census in Swain Co, NC ("Ibby
E." age 6).
She married Louis Calvin Duvall on 4 Jun 1891 in Swain Co, NC.
Their marriage record gave him as: "L. C. Duvall", age 17, son of "W. W.
and Elizabeth Duvall", and her as "I. E. Grant", age 17, daughter of "J.
P and Dorthy Grant". They were married by L. L. Thompson. Witnesses were
W. L. Thompson, George Grant (cousin) and Callie Grant (sister Mary
Caroline Grant).
Louis Duvall was born 4 Oct 1873 (per tombstone) in Swain Co, NC. He
was a son of William W. Duvall and Elizabeth L. Thomason. His name was
also spelled "Lewis" on some records.
Louis and Emma were listed on the 1900 census in Swain Co, NC in
Nantahala Township.

Alva L. Grant was born 25
Sep 1875 (per tombstone) in Swain Co, NC. I don't know who she might
have been named for, nor what her middle initial of "L" was for. Alva
was home with her parents for the 1880 census in Swain Co, NC ("Alva L."
age 4), and with them in 1900 ("Alva L." age 25, born Aug 1874), and
still with them in 1910 in Union Co, GA ("Alvie" age 26).
Around the year 1900, Alva had a relationship with someone (no idea
who) that produced a child born out of wedlock: Essie Grant, born ca
1900/01 in Swain Co, NC. I assume that someone in the family might know
who Essie's father was, but none of the relatives I've spoken to know.
Alva went to Union Co, GA with her parents, and was with them for the
1910 census there.
I don't know exactly when, but sometime between 1910 and 1920, Alva
married Gordon J. Long in Union Co, GA. Gordon J. Long was born
26 Jul 1888 in Union Co, GA, a son of John W. Long and Georgia Ann
Owenby.
I don't know if Gordon and Alva had any children together or not.
Gordon and Alva were listed on the 1920 census in Union Co, GA next
door to his parents in Gum Log Township. Daughter Essie Grant was not
with them, so she must have been married by then, or just living
elsewhere.

Dockery.
Gordon J. Long died in Union Co, GA on 2 Oct 1973. He is buried at
the Long Cemetery. Ora Dockery Long died 5 Mar 1982. She is buried at

Harkless L. Grant
was born 6 May 1877 (per tombstone) in Swain Co, NC. His name is
unusual, and I have no clue as to its origin. I don't know what his
middle initial of "L" stood for either. He was called "Hark" by family
and friends. Hark was home with his parents for the 1880 census
("Harkless L." age 3) in Swain Co, NC, and still home in 1900 ("Arkless
L." age 22, born May 1878).
When his parents moved to Union Co, GA in the 1900-1910 timeframe,
Hark went with them.
Hark married Myrtle Long in Union Co, GA ca 1905/06. Myrtle
was born 20 Apr 1886 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA, daughter of John
W. Long and Georgia Ann Owenby. Myrtle was a sister to Gordon Long who
married Alva Grant, sister of Harkless.
Harkless and Myrtle moved back to Swain County briefly, and were
there for the 1910 census in Nantahala Township. He was next door to
brother Carson Grant.

Hattie Thermudas Grant was born 18 Oct 1879 in Swain
Co, NC. I don't know who Hattie was named for, if anyone, nor what her
middle name might mean. Hattie was home with her parents for the 1880,
1900 and 1910 census. She had a child out of wedlock in 1902. She
married Thomas Joshua Gilbert around 1914 in Union Co, GA.

Carson Luther Grant was born 15 Jun 1881
(don't know source for this date, 1900 census confirms June 1881) in
Swain Co, NC. Carson was home with his parents for the 1900 census in
Swain Co, NC ("Carson L." age 18, born June 1881).
Carson married his first cousin Susie C. Lequire on 1 Apr 1906
in Swain Co, NC.
Susie was born 13 Jul 1879 in Swain Co, NC, daughter of James Merritt
Lequire and Fannie Lou Ellender Evans (sister to Darthula Evans Grant).
Carson and Susie remained in Swain Co, NC when his parents moved to

Gertrude I. Grant was born September 1883
(per 1900 census) in Swain Co, NC. I don't know what her middle initial
of "I" might stand for. She did name a daughter "Inkabo", so perhaps
that is her middle name as well. Gertrude was home with her parents
for the 1900 ("Gertie I." age 16, born Sep 1883) census in Swain Co, NC.
Gertrude Grant had a child out of wedlock (Inkabo Louella Grant) born
in August 1901. I don't know who the child's father was.
She married Joseph Noah Ledbetter in Swain Co, NC ca 1907/08
(no marriage record found).
Noah Ledbetter was born ca 1884/85 in NC, perhaps Swain County, but I
have not found him in the 1900 census, so I don't know who his parents
were.
Noah and Gertrude were listed on the 1910 census in Swain Co, NC in
Nantahala Township. They were listed as borders in someone else's

John Patton Grant Jr "Major" was born 25 Sep
1887 (per tombstone) or October 1886 (per 1900 census). On the 1900
census, he was listed as "John P. Grant", but on most other records he
was listed as "Major Grant". I'm assuming that "Major" was a nickname,
but it could be part of his name. Major Grant was home with his
parents for the 1900 ("John P." age 13, born Oct 1886) census in Swain
County. He moved with them to Union Co, GA ca 1909.
Major was home with his parents for the 1910 census in Union Co, GA
("Major" age 16).
Major married Maude Henson in Union Co, GA before 1917. I have
no data on Maude's birth or who her parents were.
Maude Henson Grant apparently died as a result of childbirth. She and
Major had an infant child who was born and died on 3 Jun 1917, and Maude
died two days later on 5 Jun 1917. She and the infant are buried side by
side at the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Co, GA.
I found what I think is John Grant on the 1920 census in Swain
County. There are some problems with the listing though. He is next door
to the Noah and Gertrude Ledbetter (John's sister), and his age is
right, but his children seem too old to be his. His wife is named
Callie, and if this is our John, then she is his second wife,
married between 1917 and 1920. The ages of the two older children
pre-date 1910, so I'm not sure how to reconcile this. So keep in mind
that this census entry may have some flaws, or not be the same John
Grant at all. I was not entirely sure if it said "Grant" or perhaps
"Yount". There were some "Yount" (or "Younce") families in the area, so
it could say that.
