John Grant and Penelope Eure of Gates, Hertford, Brunswick and Richmond Co, NCI (Marty Grant) am not related to the John Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though. John Grant was born ca 1779/80 in SC, possibly in the area that is now Marlboro County. He was listed on the 1850 census in Richmond Co, NC just 8 households from Malachi Grant (c1789/90) who I suspect is his brother. I don't know who their parents might have been. Incidentally, both families were listed as being other than "White" in these early census records, though they were listed as "white" on some records. This indicates they were of some mixed race, possibly Indian, Black or something else. Without further evidence, there is no way to be sure what their ethnic origin is. Read my general commentary on Ethnic Origins I've back tracked John Grant (and Malachi) through the census records, and I think I have John Grant all the way back to his marriage on 17 Mar 1820 in Gates Co, NC to Penelope Eure. I'm not entirely sure this couple is the same couple, though the names are right. If this marriage isn't for the John and Penelope of Richmond Co, NC, then I don't know what the maiden name is of Penelope (of Richmond). Gates County is not anywhere near Richmond County, but it isn't unreasonable for them to have migrated across the state like that. Of course, more research will be needed to confirm all of this. My main way of connecting them is the name of the wife "Penelope". Of course there could be two different John's marrying women named Penelope about the same time, but so far, I don't think that is the case. Gates County is in North Eastern NC and has Virginia for a northern border (currently Suffolk City, VA, but in 1820 that area was Nansemond Co, VA). The 1810 Gates Co, NC census shows more than 10 Eure families listed, so figuring out which one Penelope belongs to might be difficult. There were no Grant's listed in 1810 Gates Co, NC, so I don't know if John Grant was from there. The law in those days was that the marriage bond had to be taken out in the county where the bride resided, regardless of where the groom resided, or where the marriage was to take place. John and Penelope weren't the first Grant marriage in Gates Co, NC, but I didn't find any Grant's listed in Gates County census records. On 23 Dec 1800 William Wilkins married Elizabeth Grant there, but I didn't find them in Gates in 1810 or in any county near there. On 25 Sep 1809 William Collins married Abbey Grant there, but I didn't find them either in 1810 in Gates or any county near there. (The 1820 Gates census shows a William Collins) John and Penelope married around 17 March 1820 in Gates, but must have moved to neighboring Hertford County right away, for they were listed there on the 1820 census (at least I think it is them). 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1820 Hertford County, NC pg 178 John Grant 10001-00010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) John GRANT (1779/80) 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Son? 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Penelope EURE Grant (1789/90) The 1830 census showed no John Grant in that area of North eastern NC, but one did appear in Brunswick Co, NC (south from the Gates - Hertford area all the way from the north side of NC to the south side, on the SC border). I am 99% sure that the John Grant listed in Brunswick Co, NC in 1830 is the same John later found in Richmond County, but I can't be sure it is the same John previously found in Gates and Hertford Counties. John Grant was listed on the same page with a William Grant. Since John only married 10 years earlier, it doesn't seem likely that this William would be his son (though John was age 50 at this time, he could have been married prior to Penelope). I suspect, though, that this William could be John's brother. Currently, I have nothing else on this William Grant. Note that John Grant's entire family was listed in the "Free Colored" columns. I'm not sure what part of Brunswick County John Grant lived in. More research is needed in that county. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1830 Brunswick County, NC pg 327 John Grant 0000000000000-0000000000000-110100-410100 Analysis: 1 FC Male(s) 36-54 (1774-1793) John GRANT (1779/80) 1 FC Male(s) 10-23 (1805-1820) Son? 1 FC Male(s) 0-9 (1820-1830) Jackson GRANT (1826/27) son 1 FC Female(s) 36-54 (1774-1793) Penelope EURE Grant (1789/90) wife 1 FC Female(s) 10-23 (1805-1820) Daughter? 4 FC Female(s) 0-9 (1820-1830) Daughter? Daughter? Daughter? Daughter? By 1840 John Grant had moved to Richmond Co, NC and was listed a page or two from Malachi Grant. I suspect they are brothers, even though this (1840) is the first time I found them near each other. Also listed in 1840 Richmond were Jeremiah Grant (son of Malachi), and John W. Grant (possibly a son of John Sr?). Once again, each of these families were listed in the "Free Colored" columns. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1840 Richmond County, NC pg 248 John Grant Sr 0000000000000-0000000000000-010010-110100 Analysis: 1 FC Male(s) 55-99 (1740-1784) John GRANT (1779/80) 1 FC Male(s) 10-23 (1815-1830) Jackson GRANT (1826/27) son 1 FC Female(s) 36-54 (1784-1803) Penelope EURE Grant (1789/90) wife 1 FC Female(s) 10-23 (1815-1830) Daughter? 1 FC Female(s) 0-9 (1830-1840) Daughter? John Grant and family were listed on the 1850 census in Richmond County, NC, just seven houses from Malachi Grant. Both families were listed with a race of "M". This indicates (as does the 1830 and 1840 listings) that the family was of some mixed origin, perhaps Indian, or black or something else. (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1850 RICHMOND CO, NC Page 254 House/Family # 413/ 414 -- Twp GRANT JOHN 70 M M FARMER 380 SC 1779/1780 GRANT PENELOPE 60 F M NC 1789/1790 GRANT JACKSON 23 M M FARMER NC 1826/1827 Much more research is needed on this family. The census records indicate John and Penelope had at least one other son besides Jackson Grant, and it could be the John W. Grant listed in 1840 Richmond Co, NC. The census also shows they had several daughters, none of which I've identified just yet. John nor Penelope were found in Richmond Co, NC on the 1860 census, so perhaps they had died. Their son Jackson was listed in 1860 in Wolf Pitt District. In his household were two Wilson's, perhaps related. A "Druzilla Grant" age 35 was just 5 houses away. She was born in SC. Probably part of Malachi Grant's family.
