John E. Grant and Catherine of Iredell and Surry Co, NC
I (Marty Grant) am not related to the John E. Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.
John E. Grant was born 21 Apr 1815 in Burke (now Alexander) Co, NC, a son of Robert Grant and Jane F. Gibbs. I have seen no direct proof of his birth date nor that he is a son of Robert and Jane, but I'm convinced it is accurate. In the book The Heritage of Wilkes County, 1982, Mrs. W.O. Absher, Editor, Article # 605 "John Grant" by Mae R. Hayes, information is given on this family, at least it gives John's birth date and that he was a son of Robert and Jane. I've not been in contact with Ms. Hayes, but from what I've seen on my own, this all seems to be correct. Her article mentions family papers that had the names and birth dates on them.
John E. Grant married, either in Iredell or Surry Co, NC ca 1840-1847 to Catherine. No record was found, so we don't know her maiden name yet.
On the 1850 census, John and Catherine were listed in the South Division of Surry Co, NC. This was the area south of the Yadkin River. This entire section of Surry County became Yadkin County later in 1850. John's brother James S. Grant was just two houses away.

I haven't done much Grant research in Surry Co, NC, so there may be more data on the family waiting to be found. The fact that John had land (per the 1850 census) means there should be deeds in his name in Surry County.
By 1860, John and family were in Iredell County, and listed in the district South of Hunting Creek.

John's occupation changed from Carpenter in 1850 to Blacksmith in 1860. He had no real property listed in Iredell, only personal property, so he may have not owned land in Iredell at this time.
I don't have the listing yet, but John was still in Iredell Co, NC for the 1870 census and listed in Union Grove Township. It should be noted that Union Grove Township of Iredell County, borders Yadkin County.
Much more research is needed on this family and the Grant's in these counties.
