Malachi Grant and Penelope of Marlboro Dist, SC and Richmond Co, NCI (Marty Grant) am not related to the Malachi Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though. Malachi Grant was born ca 1789/90 in NC, county unknown. He might have been born in what is now Marlboro County, SC instead. (1850 census shows "NC" as his birth place). He was listed on the 1850 census in Richmond Co, NC just 8 households from John Grant (c1779/80) who I suspect is his brother. I don't know who their parents might have been. Incidentally, both families were listed as being other than "White" in these early census records, though they were listed as "white" on some records. This indicates they were of some mixed race, possibly Indian, Black or something else. Without further evidence, there is no way to be sure what their ethnic origin is. Read my general commentary on Ethnic Origins I've traced Malachi Grant back through the census records, and he has only been located in Richmond Co, NC and Marlboro Dist, SC (these two counties border each other). However, John has been tentatively traced back to Brunswick Co, NC, and before that to Hertford and Gates Co, NC. If John and Malachi are brothers, as I suspect, then perhaps Malachi is also from the north eastern part of North Carolina. The first record I have for Malachi Grant is his entry on the 1810 census in Marlboro District, SC. However, there was an apparent widow named Mary Grant listed on the 1800 census in Marlboro District, SC. She had an apparent son age 10-15 (born 1784/90) which could easily be Malachi. The 1800 census for Marlboro was alphabetical, so there is no way to figure out if Mary's neighbors in 1800 were the same as Malachi's in 1810. However, even without that, it seems a reasonable theory (one of several) that Mary could be Malachi's mother. There was no sign of Mary after 1800, or before (unless she is the Mary Grant listed with Peter Lessessne Jr in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish in 1790). The 1810 census shows "Mal" Grant in Marlboro District, SC living alone, but near "R.L. Grant" who's family was mostly in the "other" column (Free Colored). 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1810 Marlboro District, SC pg 96 Mal. Grant 00100-00000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Malachi Grant (1789/90) The R.L. Grant listed near Malachi in 1810 was older than him, and could be his father. His house contained one male in the white columns age 26-44 (born 1765/84) and 4 in the "Other" columns. Unfortunately in 1810, these weren't categorized in any more detail than that, so we don't know their ages or sex. However, it may be that R.L. is the husband, and the other 4 are his wife and three children. Just speculation though. Malachi married between 1810 and ca 1815 to Penelope ---. He was listed on the 1820 census, still in Marlboro District, SC. A Richard Grant was listed nearby (but seemingly too young to be the same person as "R.L. Grant" from 1810). 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1820 Marlboro District, SC pg 74 Malla Grant 200100-10100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Mallie GRANT (1789/90) 2 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Jeremiah GRANT (1815) son John G. GRANT (1818) son 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Penelope --- Grant (1779/80) wife 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter? The 1820 census listings don't properly reflect Malachi and Penelope's ages (I got this from a census index, and not the original, I'll need to consult the original to make sure it is correctly transcribed). If Malachi's is wrong, then perhaps Richard's is also. In 1830, Malachi was still in Marlboro District, SC, but I don't have the listing yet. Nearby was Richard S. Grant. "S" and "L" are forever being mixed up in census transcriptions, so could "Richard S" and "R.L." Grant be the same? That would make Richard at least the same age or just a little older than Malachi. If Richard is not his father, they could be brothers. Also listed in 1830 Marlboro was a William Grant. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1830 Marlboro District, SC pg 69 Malachia Grant coming soon Analysis: * Coming Soon *
By 1840 Malachi Grant had moved to Richmond Co, NC (which borders Marlboro District, SC) and was listed a page or two from John Grant. I suspect they are brothers, even though this (1840) is the first time I found them near each other. Also listed in 1840 Richmond were Jeremiah Grant (son of Malachi), and John W. Grant (possibly a son of John Sr?). All of these families were listed in the "Free Colored" columns. This was the first time for Malachi, unless his 1830 entry was like that (I don't have it yet). 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1840 Richmond County, NC pg 246 Malachi Grant 0000000000000-0000000000000-020010-010100 Analysis: 1 FC Male(s) 55-99 (1740-1784) Malachi GRANT (1789/90) 2 FC Male(s) 10-23 (1815-1830) John G. Malachi Grant and family were listed on the 1850 census in Richmond County, NC, just seven houses from John Grant. Both families were listed with a race of "M". This indicates (as does the 1830 and 1840 listings) that the family was of some mixed origin, perhaps Indian, or black or something else. (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1850 RICHMOND CO, NC Page 254B House/Family # 421/ 422 -- Twp GRANT MALIKIAH 60 M M LABORER 50 NC 1789/1790 GRANT PENELOPE 70 F M NC 1779/1780 GRANT BARNEY 23 M M FARMER NC 1826/1827 Much more research is needed on this family. The census indicates Malachi and Penelope had other children, mainly daughters, who are yet unidentified. Some of their family members were still in Marlboro District, SC in 1850, but I don't have those records yet.
