James Morgan (1780) and Margaret "Peggy" Grant (c1788) of Rutherford and Buncombe Co, NC

I have had several people share data on this family with me over the years. I'll have to dig through my notes in order to put a list here of those to thank. Until then, thanks to all who've shared data. Offhand, I recall Frank Block, Charmaine Ernst and Ken Israel sharing data with me.

I have a large number of birth and death dates for members of this family, and in my notes, I have no record of the sources for most of them. This is a genealogy "no no", but I don't want to throw them out, for I'm sure most of this data is accurate, though I can't prove it. In each case I quote a full date (Birth, death, marriage), I'll put "(source?)" next to it if the source is unknown, or I'll list the actual source, if it is known.

Margaret "Peggy" Grant was born 1788 (per tombstone). This is supported by her various census entries, which combined give her a birth of ca 1784/1790. She was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

I don't know of any other "Margaret" in the family prior to this one, so I don't know who she might have been named for, if anyone.

Margaret Grant is a proven child of Alexander and Susanna (Morris) Grant She is proven as named in the estate records of her father, and in deeds among his heirs dividing property.

Margaret seems to be home with her parents for the 1790 census. Alexander had 3 females with him, one being wife Susanna, and the other two are presumable daughters, probably including Margaret.

Margaret Grant seems to be home with her parents for the 1800 census, aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90).

On 17 Dec 1802, James Morgan obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford County to marry Peggy Grant. Her father Alexander Grant was the bondsman. James Morgan was born 27 Oct 1780 (per tombstone), presumably in Rutherford County; a son of Permenter Morgan and Gracie Jones.

On 14 Nov 1808, James Morgan sold 117 acres in Buncombe County to John Rice. The land was on the Little River. James and family would later move to Buncombe, but they were not living there at this time, or at least I don't think they were. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book F page 108).

In January 1809 term of Rutherford County Court, Susanna Grant was appointed guardian of the infant (under 21) children of Alexander Grant, deceased. (In those days children were considered "orphans" when their father died, even if the mother was still living.) This record named these children, all under 21 (or born in the range of 1788/1809): William, Polly, John, Morris, James & Patsy Grant, orphans and infants of Alexander Grant, deceased. Margaret, the oldest known child, wasn't named, as she was already 21 and already married.

James Morgan was listed on the 1810 census. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

On 12 Apr 1813, James Morgan sold 30 acres to his mother-in-law Susannah Grant. The land was on Montford Cove in Rutherford County. The deed stated that James Morgan was an heir of Alexander Grant, deceased (but did not mention Margaret). Witnesses were John Grant and William Grant (brothers of Margaret). (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 29-31 page 187).

Sometime in the 1810-1820 timeframe, James Morgan and family moved to neighboring Buncombe County, settling in the Hominy Creek region.

On 24 Aug 1823 a deed was made dividing land among Alexander Grant's heirs: William Grant, Polley Morgan, James Grant, Patsy Grant, John Grant and Peggy Morgan. This deed proves Alexander's family quite well. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 34 page 186).

In the above deed, Peggy Morgan received "Tract 6", but the deed stated they transferred it to John Grant (her brother).

On 31 Jan 1826 Susanna's lands were divided in a deed, naming the heirs of "Susanna Grant, deceased, relict of Alexander Grant, deceased". Heirs were: William Grant, James and Peggy Morgan, James Grant, Jesse and Polly Morgan, John Grant, Holland and Patsy Bradley. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 36 page 20).

On 1 Jul 1826, Susannah Grant, widow of Alexander Grant, was given (by transfer?) the 18 3/4 acres drawn from Alexander's estate by Peggy Morgan. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 36 page 279).

On 8 Jan 1827, James Morgan received a State land grant in Buncombe County, of 60 acres on Hominy Creek. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 14 page 215).

On 14 Nov 1828, James Morgan purchased 200 acres from Thomas Jones, land on Hominy Creek. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 425).

James Morgan was listed on the 1830 census in Buncombe County. He was next door to son Permenter Morgan, now married. As of 1830, there was another James Morgan who was of age and also in Buncombe County, so it is possible that some records are mixed up between the two. I'm not sure who this other James was. This younger James (born ca 1800/10) may be James H. Morgan, for I found one record showing a James with a middle initial of "H".

On 5 Dec 1831, James Morgan received a 30 acre land grant on South Fork of Hominy Creek. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 222).

On 3 Dec 1832, James Morgan sold 100 acres to Joseph Glazinor, on French Broad River. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 92).

On 5 Jan 1833, James Morgan received a 50 acre land grant on Hominy Creek. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 20 page 221).

On 30 Nov 1836, James Morgan received a 100 acre land grant on South Hominy Creek. (Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 22 page 376).

James Morgan was listed on the 1840 census in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He was just a few houses from his brother Jesse Morgan. Numerous other relatives were nearby.

Margaret Grant Morgan died in Buncombe County on 10 Sep 1845 (per tombstone) and is buried at the Miller Cemetery.

James Morgan and several of his unmarried children were listed on the 1850 census in Buncombe County. Most of his married children were listed in the same county, many close by. A young Martha Morgan (c1840) was with him as well, and she is probably a granddaughter, or a niece.

James Morgan died on 25 Oct 1854 (per tombstone) in Buncombe County and is buried at the Miller Cemetery.

James Morgan and Margaret Grant had 13 children. I'm not sure what the proof is for all of these children. Some were home for the 1850 census, and other tidbits prove some of them are siblings.

I'm not going to include additional documentation for these children at present, but I will come back to it at some future date, and include all the documentation that I have for each of them. For their offspring, see the Register Report below.
