Thomas B. Grant was born ca 1804/10 (per census analysis) in
Rutherford Co, NC. I have no clue what his middle initial of "B" might
stand for. Thomas was listed on the 1830 census and listed in the age
20-29 (born ca 1800/10), and the 1840 census gave his age as 30-39 (born
ca 1800/10). These agree with an 1800-1810 birth date. Analysis of the
1820 census records for his presumed parents show him probably in the
age 10-15 group that year, or born ca 1804/10.
I'm reasonably sure Thomas is a child of Andrew Grant and Martha Mackey, though I don't have absolute proof. They did have an unknown son his age with them in 1810 and 1820, so he fits based on that. That is thin evidence though, but some more substantial evidence is that Thomas is listed as a head of household on the 1830 census, and someone Martha's age (his presumed mother) is residing with him that year. Not only her, but several others who are very likely his siblings and nieces and nephews. These same folks are apparently listed with Martha on the 1840 census. Add to this the fact that Thomas B. Grant moved to Macon County, North Carolina by 1833, just as Martha did. Also, Thomas was closely associated with Charles B. Grant (1790/95) who is also thought to be a son of Andrew and Martha. As you can see, the case for Thomas being son of Andrew and Martha is entirely circumstantial, but I'm quite sure it is correct, but I would love some conclusive irrefutable proof. For the 1810 census, Thomas would have been 6 years old or under. His supposed parents did have an apparent son aged "under 10", or born ca 1800/10. For the 1820 census, Thomas B. Grant would have been between 10 and 16 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10) Andrew Sr did have an apparent son that age, and I suspect it is Thomas B. Grant. Thomas' father Andrew Grant died sometime ca 1825, probably in Rutherford County. Since Thomas was the oldest son left at home, he became the de facto head of household. The entire family (except those already married) left Rutherford and moved about 40 miles away to the Three Mile Creek valley in (then) Burke County (later Yancey County). They made this move ca 1825-1826. Thomas' sister Sarah Grant Vance and her husband were already living there, so that is probably what drew them there. Thomas Grant, though unmarried, was listed as head of household on the 1830 census in Burke County. He had a full household, probably consisting of his widowed mother Martha, and his sister Elizabeth and her son, as well as several orphaned nieces and nephews. They were clearly living in the Three Mile Creek area (based on neighbors). This area became Yancey County in 1833. The area they lived in can nearly be pinpointed based on their 1830 census neighbors. They were on Burke Co, NC census at the top of page 195. Next to them on one side, in this order were: David Vance, William Vance, John Vance, and a few houses down was Lewis Vance, James Wilson, Bedford Wiseman, Jacob Davis, and David Carpenter. These last two are my ancestors as well and it is well known where they lived (Three Mile Creek). The other names are clearly from the same area. David, John and Lewis Vance were brothers of Matthew Vance who married Sarah Grant, all of them supposedly sons of Matthew Vance Sr and Barbara McVeigh. Most of these families were still living here when Yancey County was formed in 1833. At least one Grant child was born here: William C. Grant son of Elizabeth Grant, born here in 1826 (per his 1850 census entry giving his place of birth as "Yancy" County). This confirms that the family was in that area at the time. Some have tried to claim this 1830 census entry for as belonging to Thomas Grant (c1801), son of Clementine, and therefore a 1st cousin to this Thomas. The reasoning behind this competing claim is that this other Thomas (1801) is not found elsewhere in 1830, yet he was married in the 1820's. I am quite sure that this entry is actually Thomas B. It seems that they initially settled in the Cowee Creek valley. In the year 1833, Thomas B. Grant married Mary Miller in Macon County. No public marriage record was found, but Mary gave this date in her Widow's Pension application for War of 1812 service (for her 2nd husband John Cargile). Her actual statement was: "her maiden name is Mary Miller, married Thomas Grant in the year 1833, he died in the year 1845 in Macon Co, NC.". She did not state that they married in Macon County, but that seems likely, since both families were living there at that time. Mary "Polly" Miller was born ca 1813/14 in Buncombe County, North Carolina, daughter of Joseph Miller and Sarah Cox. She moved with her parents to Macon County about the year 1823. When her mother died ca 1834, her father Joseph Miller married Susanna Tabitha Grant in 1834, a niece of Thomas B. Grant. This made Mary's step-mother-in-law also her niece by marriage. On 28 Oct 1836 Thomas Grant entered (claimed) 52 acres of land in Macon County in District 9, Tract 97. This land was granted to him in 1836 (no precise date). I found no corresponding deed recording this Grant, nor any record of him or his family disposing of the property. (North Carolina Land Grants - Card Index at NC Archives). On 2 May 1838, Thomas Grant entered a 50 acre tract on Millers Creek (named for his brother-in-law Noah Miller, I believe), which is somewhere near Cowee Creek (perhaps between Cowee Creek and Watauga Creek), but apparently not found on modern maps. This was Entry # 1579, which was granted to Thomas on 24 Nov 1840 in State Land Grant # 383. (NC Land Grants Book 146 page 327 and Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1372). On 22 May 1840, Thomas B. Grant witnessed a deed from Charles Grant (his brother) to Henry Burnette. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1167). Thomas B. Grant was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County, North Carolina as a head of household, as was his brother Charles, and their mother Martha. All three lived fairly close to one another, yet all three were listed on different pages. Thomas' neighbor on one side was Noah Miller, his wife's brother. On the other side was Noah Burchfield. Thomas had an "extra" female with him, aged 30-39 (born ca 1800/10). I don't know who this could be, perhaps a sister, or sister-in-law. I can't figure out who it is, for Mary had no sisters that age. It is possible that this is Thomas' sister "Lou Grant", who, if living then, would be in that age group. She was the mother of Wilkie I. Grant (1820) who seems to be residing with his grandmother Martha (Mackey) Grant in 1840. I don't want to draw any conclusions about who this extra female might be, but Lou Grant is certainly a possibility. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Macon Co, NC pg 156 Thomas B. Grant entered 100 acres of land (Entry # 2208) described as at the Head of Tennessee River and Millers Creek. It was granted to him by State land grant # 608 on 9 Dec 1844. (NC Land Grants Book 149 page 447 and Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 105 and Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 544). Also on 1 Jan 1841, Thomas B. Grant entered 50 acres of land (Entry # 2209). This was granted to Thomas on 2 Jan 1845 in State Grant # 650. (NC Land Grants Book 150 page 132). On 17 Nov 1845, Thomas B. Grant bound himself to Joshua Totherow for $300 (meaning he borrowed the money), using 100 acres of land as warranty if not repaid. Witnessed by J. B. Lackey. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book 3 page 396). Thomas B. Grant died sometime after the above deed, but before the year 1845 was over, so sometime in November or December of 1845. His death year of "1845" was given by his widow Mary in a Widow's Pension Application she filed many years later. A few years ago, Ollie Vee Clark told me that Thomas B. Grant died of Typhoid Fever. His estate was small, and the only record was dated 1851 (see below). Mary was listed as head of household on the 1850 census in Macon County. None of the other Grants were close by, but Mary's brother John Miller was just two houses away. For some reason, Mary was listed with no real property, though she should have had all of Thomas' land. She was listed between the Nathan Tabor family and the James Parker family. Grant, deceased. (Loose Estates, NC Archives) On 12 Sep 1851, an inventory of the estate of Thomas B. Grant, deceased, was returned. It stated it was as of the time of his death (but why was it recorded 6 years later?). Here is his meager estate as returned by Mary Grant, Administrator. She signed with an "X". 1 Mare & Colt 2 Cows & 3 Yearlings 6 Head Sheep 6 Head Hogs Household & Kitchen Furniture (Loose Estates, NC Archives) On 27 Jan 1852, Mary Grant entered 50 acres on Mills Creek (Entry # 6249). It was granted to her by State Land Grant # 2040 on 15 Dec 1856. (NC Grants Book 161 page 500 and Swain Co, NC Deed Book 8 page 223). On 26 Aug 1854, Mary Grant, administrator of Thomas B. Grant, deceased, sold 100 acres to James M. Grant (her nephew, son of Charles B. Grant). The land was on Tennessee River, Miller's Creek. Witnessed by W. H. Grant (James' brother). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book G page 529). Mary was listed as head of household for the 1860 census in Macon County. Once again, no other Grants were nearby. Mary's sister Cynthia Miller Truitt was next door to them on one side with her family, and on the other side was Leander Sellars. It appears (but I'm not sure) that Mary had moved to the Middle Creek region (present Ellijay Township) to live near her sister. Although Mary still owned the Mill Creek land, she didn't seem to be living on it, at least not based on her neighbors. I don't know where I got it, but I have their actual marriage date as 24 Oct 1861. In her widow's Pension application she stated they were married by Martin Dehart, Esquire. John was at least 40 years older than Mary. John Cargile's birth date has presented a problem, for each record I've found offers something contradictory. The 1850 census entry for him gives his age as 63 (born ca 1786/87), and that he was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina. The 1860 census gives his age as 80 (born 1779/80), and the 1870 census gives his age as 95 (born ca 1774/75), and an 1872 pension application gives his age then as 90 (born ca 1781/82). His tombstone gives "1796". I can't say which of these is most accurate, but for the sake of having something to settle on, I'll just say he was born ca 1786/87 in Wilkes County, North Carolina (both facts per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents were, but he had been married prior to his marriage to Mary. His first wife was Nancy Grey whom he married on or after 22 May 1811 in Wilkes County (her name and that date from marriage bond). Nancy was born ca 1778/79 in "Peedee", North Carolina, which is in Anson County, I believe. These facts are from her 1850 census entry "Nancy" age 71, born "Peedee NC". John Cargile was a War of 1812 soldier. He lived in various places, but he enlisted in South Carolina on 1 Oct 1814 and served until 12 Mar 1815 in Captain Manley Ford's Company of the South Carolina Militia. John was listed on the 1830 and 1840 census in Haywood County, North Carolina, probably living in that part of Haywood that later became Jackson County (in 1851). John and wife Nancy were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County, North Carolina. Based on their neighbors, I'm fairly sure they were in the border region with Haywood, in the part of Macon / Haywood that was cut off to form Jackson County in 1851. Nancy Grey Cargile died between 1850 and 1860 in Jackson County, North Carolina. John Cargile was listed on the 1860 census in Jackson County. John and Nancy apparently had no children. John Cargile and Mary were listed on the 1870 census in Jackson County in Deep Creek Township. This puts them in the area near present day Bryson City (present day Swain County). I don't know if this is where John's family was all along, but if not, they had moved there in the 1860's. On 4 Jun 1872, in a Pension Application, John Cargle age 90 stated that he married wife Mary Miller Grant in Oct 1861 in Macon County. The application (not the marriage) was witnessed by Thomas Jenkins and John A. Odum. On 20 Jan 1873, John Cargile, assignee of William H. Thomas, received a North Carolina Land Grant of 86 acres on the Tuckasegee River to the line of the Big Bear Reservation (Land set aside for the Cherokees). Many of these land grants in this area were later disputed by the Cherokees as encroaching on their territory, but I'm not sure if this was part of those suits. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 50). On 27 Feb 1876, John Cargile died in Swain County (date given in widow's pension record). He was anywhere from 101 years old down to a young 94, depending on which birth record is used. He is buried at the Jenkins Cemetery in Bryson City. His stone says "J. Cargel 1796-1876". On 22 Apr 1878, Mary Cargle, age 62, widow of John Cargle, deceased, filed for a Widow's pension based on John's War of 1812 service. Her pension application gave several tidbits of genealogical data, including that she married under the name Mary Grant to John Cargle "about 1860" by Martin Dehart, esquire. That John Cargle died 27 Feb 1876 in Swain County. Witnesses to the pension application were John H. Everett and J. M. Smiley. Mary was paid a pension from 14 Feb 1879 until 1 Aug 1889 (presumably she was dead by that latter date). (War of 1812 Widow's Pension Application WC-17108) On 11 Dec 1878, Mary Cargle age 64, filed an affidavit pertaining to her Widow's Pension application. She gave some great info, including that she married in October 1861 to John Cargle in Macon County under the name Mary Grant and that "her maiden name is Mary Miller, married Thomas Grant in the year 1833, he died in the year 1845 in Macon". The affidavit was witnessed by E. Everett and James R. Evans. (War of 1812 Widow's Pension Application WC-17108) Mary and children and some grandchildren were listed on the 1880 census in Swain County in Charleston Township. Daughter Rachel and her family were next door. It does appear that she was living on the land that John Cargile was granted in 1873 on the Tuckasegee River next to the Big Bear Reservation. Several of the other family members with her in 1880 were also listed as "Cargle", but that was just a census error, as they were Grants. F. Hyde, being land on the south bank of the Tuckasegee River. Witnesses were J. H. Everett. This is part of the 86 acres granted to John Cargile in 1873. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 392). On the same date (20 May 1884), Mary Cargile sold 3 1/2 acres to J. H. Everett on the South Bank of the Tuckasegee River. This is part of the 86 acres granted to John Cargile in 1873. Witnessed by N. F. Hyde. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 414). Also on 20 May 1884 Mary Cargile sold another 29 1/2 acres to N. F. Hyde, or else this is a duplicate of the first deed to him. Sometimes a deed would get filed twice by mistake. Witnesses were J. H. Everett. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 5 page 171). On 14 Oct 1886 Mary Cargle of Swain County deeded land to Rachel Grant (her daughter) for natural love and affection, being 50 acres. I think this is the 50 acre land grant to Thomas B. Grant in 1840. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 8 page 466). On the same date (14 Oct 1886) Mary Cargle of Swain County deeded land to Sarah Grant (her daughter) for natural love and affection, being 86 acres on the Tuckasegee River, except for parcels deeded to N. F. Hyde and J. H. Everett. (Swain Co, NC Deed Book 8 page 468). Mary Miller Grant Cargile died sometime around 1 Aug 1889, for that is the date of the last pension payment made to her. I can only assume that she is buried near John Cargile at the Jenkins Cemetery, but if so, she has no marker. |

Thomas B. Grant and Mary Miller had 6 children as proven by the various
census records, and some are further proven by land deeds. Mary and her
second husband John Cargile had no children together, nor did he have
any children with his first wife Nancy Grey.

Ollie Ann Grant was born
22 Dec 1837 (based on her tombstone giving 22 Dec 1844 and census
records showing her born ca 1837/38). She was born in Macon County,
North Carolina. She was undoubtedly named for her aunt Ollie Ann Miller
Lindsay (c1823).
Special thanks to Hiram Grogan and Ollie Vee Clark (deceased) for data shared on this family. Ollie would have been about 2 years old by the time of the 1840 census, and her father did have two apparent daughters aged "under 5" (born ca 1835/40) with him. Ollie was home with her widowed mother on the 1850 census in Macon County ("Olly Ann" age 12, born Macon). Ollie Ann Grant was not with her mother on the 1860 census, nor have I found her elsewhere that year. I suspect she was probably residing with another family as a domestic servant, and just not listed on the census. Ollie had a child out of wedlock in July 1861. I have no idea as to who the father was. The child was named Hermoth Dare Mary Samantha Grant (later she took her step-father's name "Burns"). Ollie Ann Grant married Charles Harlee W. Burns ca 1864 in Jackson County, North Carolina (no marriage record found). "Harry" was born 24 Apr 1847 (source?) in Macon (later Jackson, now Swain) County, son of Uriah Charles Burns and Sarah Louise Burchfield. Harry and Ollie were listed on the 1870 census in Jackson County in Deep Creek Township. Her mother and several siblings were fairly close by. It seems that the Burns lived just over the new line in Jackson County after this. Charles Harlee W. "Harry" Burns was murdered on 1 Jan 1871 in Bryson City by one Quill Rose. I have no details of this, but this was shared with me by several of his descendants, namely Hiram Grogan and Ollie Vee Clark. Ollie had one child just a few months after the death of her husband. A few years later (in February 1874), Ollie had another child, though I don't know who the father was. This child took the "Burns" surname (which by law she should have, considering it was Ollie's legal name at the time), though the child was not Harry's. Her name was Ibby Clarinda Lynn Maranda Elvira Burns. (Where did Ollie come up with these names?). The family supposedly moved to Cherokee County, Georgia around this time (1880's). Ollie was found on the 1900 census in Cherokee County, Georgia in Ball Ground District. Ollie was listed on the very last page of the township, and had a grandson with her surname "Hyatt". I couldn't quite read his given name, though it began with a "W". I also couldn't make out his complete birth year, though it began 189-. I don't know which of Ollie's children he belongs to. Hiram Grogan found several Knoxville City Directory entries for Ollie: (Note that daughter Harlie L. Burns was with her some of the time).
From the above list, we can see that Ollie lived at 925 Coleman Street until 1906, and sometime between then and 1909 moved to 912 Cardwell Street. A very long and complex court order was recorded on 16 May 1906 in Swain County, North Carolina, pertaining to the heirs of Uriah Burns (Ollie's father-in-law) who had died way back in 1862. The record named a huge number of heirs, including Ollie's bunch in this manner: "Harlee Burns, Eliza Tarbet, Kelia Smith are children of Harry Burns, deceased and grandchildren of U. C. Burns, deceased". It also stated that they were all non-residents of North Carolina. (Swain Co, NC Orders and Decrees 1873-1908 page 236-261). I don't have Ollie on the 1910 census, but she was most likely in Knoxville. Ollie was listed on the 1912 and 1913 City Directories for Knoxville, as "Ollie A. Burns, widow of Harry Burns", living at 936 McCammon Avenue. I don't have Ollie on the 1920 census, but she was most likely in Knoxville. Ollie was listed on the 1924 City Directory for Knoxville, as "Ollie A. Burns, widow of Harry Burns", living at 712 Calloway Avenue. Ollie Ann Grant Burns died in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee on 3 Jul 1924 (per tombstone). She is buried in South Knoxville at Woodlawn Cemetery (per Hiram Grogan). Her stone gives her birth date as 22 Dec 1844 (which is off a few years per other records). Ollie and husband Harry Burns had four children together, the oldest (Sarah Alice Burns) dying as an infant, being accidentally burned to death in her own crib. (I have no idea how that might have happened). Ollie's two children out of wedlock (Hermoth and Ibby) both lived in Cherokee County, Georgia and raised families. |

Isabell Levina Grant was born 25 Jul 1842
(per death certificate) in Macon County, North Carolina (proven by 1850
and 1860 census). She was probably named in part for her Aunt Margaret
Lavina Miller.
Ibby was home with her widowed mother in 1850 ("Isabel" age 8, born Macon) and still home with her in 1860 ("Ibby L." age 16, born Macon). In the year 1861, Ibby had a relationship with a Mr. Dehart which resulted in the birth of an out of wedlock child named Jane Ann Dehart, born March 1862. There were numerous Deharts in the area, but I have not been able to identify which Mr. Dehart was the one. It is unusual that Ibby gave the child the Dehart surname, for the law required an out of wedlock child to use the mother's name. However, this naming may indicate that the father acknowledged the child and was paying support or something. Ibby and her daughter Jane were home with her mother and step-father for the 1870 census in Jackson County ("Isabella Grant" age 25). On 5 Jan 1875, Isabella Grant age 26 of Swain, married Elisha Sherrill age 22, of Jackson, in Swain County. They were married by R. M. Roberts, Baptist Minister at John Cargle's house in Charleston Township. Witnesses were G. W. Battle, D. Evans (Daniel E. Evans) and R. Grant (sister Rachel). Elisha C. Sherrill was born 29 Nov 1851 in Jackson County, son of Jonas Bedford Sherrill and Mary Hiatt. They lived in the Quallatown region of Jackson County, which bordered the section of Swain County where Ibby's mother lived, so they were not too far removed. They were listed on the 1880 census in Jackson County in Quallatown Township. Ibby's sister Ollie Ann was next door. Of special note is that Elisha was listed as 1/2 Idiotic. I'm not sure what this means exactly. She was buried at the Sherrill Cemetery (per the death record). I've no information on whether she has a stone or not. Ollie Vee Clark (deceased) told me that Ibby was a "Herb Doctor" and a midwife, and that she'd get a call to help someone, and she would grab her little bag of medication and mount her mule and ride off to help. Elisha C. Sherrill died on 4 Jun 1930 in Jackson County. His death record gave his name as "Elisha C. Sherrill" age 79 of Qualla, died 4 Jun 1930. Father was "Jona Sherrill", born Haywood County, and mother Mary Hyatt, born Haywood. The informant was G. B. Sherrill of Whittier and Shoal Creek. Jane Ann Dehart, born March 1862, was a daughter of Ibby Grant and Mr. Dehart. The 1870 and 1880 census records gave her name as "Dehart", but according to law she was a "Grant", since an out of wedlock child had to have take the mother's name. Her marriage record got it right, listing her as "Grant". Jane was with her mother and grandmother Mary for the 1870 census ("Jane A. Dehart" age 7). She was listed twice on the 1880 census, once with her mother and step-father in 1880 ("Jane Ann Sherrill" age 17) and again with her grandmother Mary Miller Grant Cargile ("J. Dehart", age 16, relationship "Granddaughter"). On 1 Jun 1883, Jane Grant age 21, married William Lemmon age 23 in Jackson County. I have found no information on William Lemmon (or Lemming). A cousin (Cindy Jordan) shared his dates of 1862-1890 with me, but I don't know what the source for that is. It is probably correct though. William Lemming did die before 11 Nov 1893, for on that date Jane remarried. On 11 Nov 1893, George W. Jordan age 20 of Jackson, married Jane Lemmings age 28, also of Jackson. They married in Jackson County by L. F. Marr. Witnesses were W. W. Kizer and K. Marr and Sallie Zachory. The marriage record gave his parents as William and Mahala Jordan and hers as "Ibbie Sherrill" (no father listed). George Walter Jordan was born November 1873 (per 1900 census) in Jackson County. They were on the 1900 census just five houses from her mother and step-father in Jackson County. Jordan died in 1927, and Jane died in 1939, both in Jackson County. I don't know where they are buried. Lula Bell Sherrill born April 1876 in Jackson County, is a daughter of Elisha C. Sherrill and Ibby Grant. From an examination of her records, I get the distinct impression that she was never married, but claimed to be so on census records to hide out of wedlock children. I could be wrong about this, but she did have at least four different children (Bessie L. Hendrics-1895, Dora Hendricks-1898, Pearson Sherrill-c1902 and Rachel Crane-c1919). The alternate theory is that she married a Mr. Hendricks before 1895. Her 1900 census entry listed her marital status as "divorced". Her next child bore the "Sherrill" surname, indicating she either married a Sherrill cousin, or the child was born out of wedlock, and took the mother's maiden name. I didn't find her in 1910, but in 1920 she was with her parents, listed as a Crane, and her marital status said "Married", but no husband was living there. A search of the Jackson County marriages from that time-frame may help sort this out. |
