John Grant (1794/1800) and Sarah Morris of Rutherford Co, NC and Blount and Monroe Co, TN

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 6 times removed of John Grant.

Special thanks to Laura Hensley and others for data shared on this family. A Family Bible record (which I have not seen) gives the birth dates of all the children in this family and a few other dates.

John Grant was born ca 1794/1800 (based on census analysis) in Rutherford County, North Carolina.  I'm not totally sure of his approximate birth date, but I base it on several factors. Both the 1830 and 1840 census gives him ages that show his birth at ca 1790/1800. The 1820 census gives his birth at ca 1794/1804. Combining these records he was born ca 1794/1800.

John Grant was possibly named after his grandfather John Morris.

John Grant is a proven child of Alexander and Susanna (Morris) Grant He is a proven child, as named in the estate records of his father, and in deeds among his heirs dividing property.

John Grant seems to be home with his parents for the 1800 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800).

In January 1809 term of Rutherford County Court, Susanna Grant was appointed guardian of the infant (under 21) children of Alexander Grant, deceased. (In those days children were considered "orphans" when their father died, even if the mother was still living.) This record named these children, all under 21 (or born in the range of 1788/1809): William, Polly, John, Morris, James & Patsy Grant, orphans and infants of Alexander Grant, deceased. Margaret, the oldest known child, wasn't named, as she was already 21 and already married.

John Grant was probably home with his widowed mother for the 1810 census. He is probably the male with her aged 10-15 (born ca 1794/1800).

On 12 Apr 1813, John Grant (and brother William Grant) witnessed a deed from James Morgan (their brother-in-law) to Susannah Grant (their mother). This shows John was at least 16 then, for I think you had to be at least that age to witness a deed (someone correct me if I'm wrong). (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 29/31 page 187).

John Grant was listed as head of household for the 1820 census, though he was not yet married. He had several people with him, who I judge to be his widowed mother, brother James and sister Martha. One flaw with this census is that at a glance there seems to be two males in the household, one age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804) and one age 16-17 (born ca 1802/04). However, this second category is not supposed to represent a different person, but someone who is also enumerated in the 16-25 age group. So if a person is listed in the 16-17 age group, he is also to be listed in the 16-25 group. This means that either the census taker made a mistake and there are two males in the household, or that there is only one male and he is the one age 16-17, but it seems to me that someone that age could not be considered a head of household. My view is the enumerations represent two different males (see the 1820 census information page for a more detailed description of this census).

On 14 Aug 1820, John Grant received a land grant from the state for 50 acres on Cove Creek, ajoining William Grant's property. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 34 page 111)

In July Court, 1821, John Grant was listed as a juror. (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1821-1825 page 19)

Also in July Court, John Grant was appointed to Captain Humphreys Company for 1 year (didn't say what he was being appointed to though). (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1821-1825 page 26)

John Grant married Sarah "Sally" Morris on 15 Dec 1822, presumably in Rutherford County. This marriage record was not found in the county records, and is probably from the Family Bible record (that I have not seen). Sarah Morris was probably a cousin of John's, to some degree, but I don't know the connection. Sarah Morris was born ca 1800/10 in Rutherford or Burke County, North Carolina, a daughter of Henry Morris and Catherine Walton Goodbread.  (Henry Morris is a son of William Morris (1750) who might be a brother to John Morris, grandfather of John Grant).

In January 1823 Court, John Grant was on a jury. (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1821-1825 page 146)

On 24 Aug 1823 a deed was made dividing land among Alexander Grant's heirs: William Grant, Polley Morgan, James Grant, Patsy Grant, John Grant and Peggy Morgan. This deed proves Alexander's family quite well. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 34 page 186).

In the above deed, John Grant received "Tract 4", consisting of 13 acres, and Tract 6 containing 102 acres.

In January Court, 1824, John Grant was listed on a jury. (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1821-1825 page 239).

On 31 Jan 1826 Susanna's lands were divided in a deed, naming the heirs of "Susanna Grant, deceased, relict of Alexander Grant, deceased". Heirs were: William Grant, James and Peggy Morgan, James Grant, Jesse and Polly Morgan, John Grant, Holland and Patsy Bradley. (Rutherford Co, NC Deed Book 36 page 20).

In July Court, 1828, John Grant and brother William Grant were listed as jurors. (Rutherford Co, NC Court Minutes 1825-1830 page 274).

John Grant was listed on the 1830 census in Rutherford County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were. There was an "extra" male the same age as John living with them. I don't know that is, it could be a brother or brother-in-law, or a hired laborer.

Sometime between 1830 and ca 1833, John Grant moved his family to nearby Blount County, Tennessee, settling in the Chillowhee area (which is on the river bordering Monroe and Blount County). Their descendants lived on both sides of the river.

John Grant was listed on the 1840 census in Blount County, Tennessee. They were the only Grants in the county.

Sometime in the early 1840's, (Proven in January 1844) Henry Morris (Sarah's father) made his Will in McDowell County, North Carolina, naming heirs including "Sally Grant, wife of John Grant". (McDowell Co, NC Will Book 1 page 7).

Sarah Morris Grant died on 22 Sep 1841 in Blount County and is buried at the Chilhowee Cemetery. I don't know if she has a marked grave or not.

John Grant made his Will in Blount County on 3 May 1842. (I forget who shared this with me, but thanks to whomever it was!)

Know all men by the presents that I, John Grant, of the County of Blount and the State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and memory do by these presents make and constitute the following my Last Will and Testaments - First, my funeral expenses to be paid and all my just debts-- Secondly, all my Estate real and personal to be remaining together without any division for the purpose of maintaining and raising my small children and after the youngest child becomes of twenty-one years of age all my property real and personal to be equally divided and distributed among all my surviving children. Thirdly, that if any of my children should die without lawful issue, their part of the property to be equally divided between their surviving brothers and sisters. Fourthly, for the purpose of carrying this my Last Will and Testiment into effect, I do hereby constitue and appoint my Eldest son, James M. Grant and Joseph S. Milligan my executors. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presents of F. L. Milligan. Signed John Grant (seal) This 3 day of May 1842

John Grant died on 29 Dec 1848, and is presumably also buried at Chilhowee Cemetery.

Children

John Grant and Sarah Morris had nine children per the supposed family bible. Although I've not seen this Bible record, the list of children is perfectly feasible, and probably a correct and full listing. The birth dates work well (mostly) with the various census records. A Monroe County, Tennessee Court case dated 8 Nov 1860 further proves this family. On that date, Henry S. Hensley and wife Dollie Jane sued John H. Milligan concerning the estate of John Grant, stating he had 9 children, and so naming them (James M. Grant, John Grant, Elizabeth or Eliza, wife of John H. Milligan, Henry Grant, Mrs. Harrison, Catherine Grant, and Dollie Jane Grant, now Hensley.) Three of the nine were not named (Sarah, Alfred and William).

Eliza Grant was born 19 Oct 1823 (per Family Bible?) in Rutherford County, North Carolina. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (aged 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and apparently home still in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).

She married John H. Milligan in Monroe County, Tennessee sometime before ca 1847. John was born 9 Nov 1813 in South Carolina (per 1850 census). Other researchers have stated that he is a son of Joseph S. Milligan and Susan ---.

For the 1850 census, they were living in Monroe County, Tennessee, with Eliza's sister Dolly and brother William Rufus Grant residing with them.

John and family were still in Monroe County for the 1880 census, with niece Catherine Hensley and nephew Thomas Hensley living with them. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Eliza Grant Milligan died on 24 Sep 1893, and John H. Milligan on 9 Feb 1896. Both are buried at Chilhowee Cemetery in Blount County.

James Morris Grant was born 24 Apr 1825 (per Family Bible?) in Rutherford County, North Carolina.  He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and apparently with them in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).

Apparently, James M. Grant moved to Texas in the 1840's, but returned to Tennessee before 1850.

For the 1850 census, James was living in Blount County, Tennessee with his brother Henry.

On 15 Apr 1851 (source?), James M. Grant married Matilda Harrison in Monroe County, Tennessee. Matilda was born ca 1826 in Tennessee, daughter of William Harrison and Nancy Adams.

They left Tennessee and moved to Greene County, Missouri sometime circa 1858 or thereabouts.

James and family were listed on the 1860 census in Greene County, in Cass Township (Willard Post Office). Brother Henry and his family were listed in the same household with him, but with a different family number. This means they were under the same roof, but counted as different families for census purposes.

The court case dated 8 Nov 1860 (pertaining to the John Grant estate) mentioned James M. Grant, and stated he lived in Texas when his father died. If this is correct, then James had moved to Texas in the 1840's, and was there in 1848. Apparently he moved back to Tennessee shortly afterwards.

I have very little data on the family after this point. They lived in Greene County, and then later moved to Polk County, Missouri. They were listed in Polk for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Most of the additional data I have on this family was shared by Jim Grant and other researchers.

Henry Grant was born 11 Nov 1826 (per Family Bible?) in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and apparently with them in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

Henry Grant married Caroline Harrison on 26 Jan 1849 in Monroe County, Tennessee. Caroline was born ca 1831/32 in Tennessee (probably Blount County), a daughter of James Harrison and Malinda Roddy.

For the 1850 census, Henry and family were living in Blount County, Tennessee with his brother James living with them.

This means they were under the same roof, but counted as different families for census purposes.

The court case dated 8 Nov 1860 (pertaining to the John Grant estate) mentioned Henry Grant as an heir of John Grant.

I have very little data on the family after this point. They lived in Greene County, and apparently remained there.

Most of the additional data I have on this family was shared by Jim Grant and other researchers.

Sarah Grant was born 22 Aug 1827 (per Family Bible?) in Rutherford County, North Carolina. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (aged "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and apparently home still in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

On 1 Oct 1846, Sarah Grant married Michael Harrison in Monroe County, Tennessee. Michael was born 14 Feb 1824 in Blount County, son of William Harrison and Nancy Adams (per various Harrison researchers).

For the 1850 census, they were living in Monroe County, Tennessee, with Sarah's sister Catherine and brother Webster residing with them.

Sarah Grant died on 26 Apr 1872 in Monroe County. She is buried at Chilhowee Cemetery in Blount County.

Michael Harrison and children were still in Monroe County for the 1880 census, with his sister-in-law Catherine Grant living with them. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Michael Harrison died on 15 Jul 1894. He is also buried at Chilhowee Cemetery in Blount County.

John Grant was born 24 Apr 1829 (per Family Bible?) in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He married Evaline Johnson and lived in Graham and Cherokee County, North Carolina.

See his own page for additional information.

Alfred Webster Grant was born 4 Apr 1833 (per Family Bible?) in Blount County, Tennessee.

He was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

For the 1850 census, Webster was living in Monroe County, Tennessee with his sister Sarah Grant Harrison and her family.

Apparently, Webster left Tennessee with his brothers James and Henry and moved to Greene County, Missouri sometime circa 1858 or thereabouts.

He married Martha H. Peck in Greene County, Missouri on 23 Feb 1858.

Webster and family were listed on the 1860 census in Greene County, in Cass Township (Willard Post Office).

I have very little data on the family after this point.

Most of the additional data I have on this family was shared by Jim Grant and other researchers.

William Rufus Grant was born 23 Sep 1834 (per Family Bible?) in Blount County, Tennessee. He was married twice, and lived most of his adult life in Swain County, North Carolina.

See his own page for additional information.

Catherine Grant was born 11 Nov 1836 (per Family Bible?) in Blount County, Tennessee. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40). Since she was very young when both parents died, she was probably raised by her older siblings. A Court case dated 1860 indicated she lived with the Harrisons, which is also supported by her being with them in 1850.

For the 1850 census, Catherine Grant was living with her sister Sarah Grant and husband Michael Harrison in Monroe County, Tennessee.

Catherine was back living with Michael Harrison in 1880, though sister Sarah was dead by then. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I don't yet have Catherine on the 1900 census, but she was probably in Monroe County still.

Catherine Grant died on 3 Sep 1906 in either Blount or Monroe County. She is buried at Chilhowee Cemetery in Blount County.

Dolly Jane Grant was born 27 Apr 1839 (per Family Bible?) in Blount County, Tennessee. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40). Since she was very young when both parents died, she was probably raised by her older siblings. A Court case dated 1860 indicated she lived with the Milligans, which is also supported by her being with them in 1850.

For the 1850 census, Dolly was living with her sister Eliza and her husband John Milligan in Monroe County, Tennessee.
