Jubal Grant and Nancy Hightower of Wilson Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to Jubal Grant as far as I know. Jubal Grant was born ca 1790/1800. I would guess that he was most likely born in North Carolina or Virginia, though he could have been born in Tennessee as well. I don't have any clues for who Jubal's parents might be. Jubal would probably have been home with his parents for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census. Unfortunately, I don't know where to look for clues about where he was in those years. He could have been in Tennessee that entire time, but unfortunately, those census records are lost for 1790, 1800 and 1810 for most of the state, including Wilson County. The 1820 census is extant for western TN only, including Wilson County, but there were no Grants listed there in 1820. Jubal Grant married Nancy Hightower on 28 Oct 1820 in Wilson Co, TN. Nancy was born ca 1790/1800 per the 1830 and 1840 census, or born ca 1805 based on 1850, 1860 and 1870 (all of these last give slightly different ages, but ca 1803-1806 timeframe). She was born in VA, probably in Pittsylvania County. Nancy might be a child of Stith Hightower, who was the only person of that surname listed in Wilson Co, TN in 1820. He did have an apparent daughter Nancy's age with him in 1820. In 1830, he was there in Wilson County still, listed as "Stiff Hightower", and in 1840, still there, listed as "Stith Hightower". In 1850, he was listed on the next page from Nancy Hightower Grant in Wilson Co, TN. Stith Hightower (c1779) and wife Rebecca (c1781) are my main suspects for Nancy's parents, they seem the only choice as there were no other Hightower families in the area. Stith Hightower married Rebecca Marlow on 4 Dec 1799 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Jubal Grant was listed on the 1830 census in Wilson Co, TN. His was the only Grant household in Wilson County that year. He had a couple of "extra" people with him, including a female born ca 1770/80, who could easily be his mother, or perhaps his mother-in-law (if Stith Hightower was not Nancy's father). 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Wilson County, TN pg 99 Jubb Grant 2200010000000-0101010100000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Jubal GRANT (1790/1800) s/o ? 2 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Son? (1820/25) --> 1825/30 in 1840 Jubal Grant was still in Wilson Co, TN for the 1840 census, and listed on the same page with Stith Hightower, his possible father-in-law. Jubal's was no longer the only Grant household in Wilson Co, TN, as a William Grant (c1794) was there in 1840, but not listed close by. William had been in neighboring Smith Co, TN prior to 1840, so might be related to Jubal, or might not be. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Wilson County, TN pg 236 Jubel Grant 0222001000000-2010001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1790-1800) Jubal GRANT (1790/1800) s/o ? 2 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825) Son? GRANT (1836/37) daughter Mary E. GRANT (1839/40) daughter Jubal Grant apparently died in the 1840's, for his wife Nancy was listed as head of household in 1850. Their last child was born ca 1843/44, so he must have died after then, but before 1850. Widow Nancy Hightower Grant was listed on the 1850 census in Wilson Co, TN, however, her age in 1850, 1860 and 1870 (while fairly consistent for those three census records) showed her born ca 1805/06 or thereabouts. Nancy and her children were listed in Civil District Number 2 of Wilson County. William S. Grant (c1826) was nine houses away. No other Grants were nearby. Nancy's probable parents, Stith and Rebecca Hightower, were listed on the next page from her, about 10 houses away.

I don't have the full listing, but the names and ages: Nancy Grant-55, Nancy J-22, Mary 3-20, Rachel S-18, Francis M-31. Page 22-262 (From Byron Sistler 1860 Census of TN) According to the 1870 census index, Nancy Grant, age 66 was listed on the 1870 census in Wilson Co, TN. I don't have the listing yet. ChildrenJubal and Nancy had several children per the 1830 through 1860 census records. Unknown Son (1820/25). Jubal Grant had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and with him in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but he was not with his widowed mother in 1850, so had married or died by then. There were no male Grants this age in Wilson Co, TN in 1850, so if this son was still living, he had migrated elsewhere by then. Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Jubal Grant had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but not with him in 1840, unless she was enumerated in the age 10-14 group (born ca 1825/30), which works if she was born ca 1825. If not, then she was married or dead by 1840. I suspect she was still home in the ca 1825/30 age group though. If so, she was not with her widowed mother in 1850, so had married or died by then. Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Jubal Grant had no apparent daughter this age with him in 1830, but she was with him in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). This may be the same girl enumerated in the ca 1820/25 group in 1830 who was not home in 1840. This works if she were born ca 1825. Whoever she was, she was not with her widowed mother in 1850, so had married or died by then. Unknown Son (1825/30). Jubal Grant had an apparent son this age with him in 1830 (age "under 5, born ca 1825/30), and with him in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but he was not with his widowed mother in 1850, so had married or died by then. I strongly suspect this is William S. Grant (c1826) who was just nine houses from Nancy Grant in 1850. I have no direct proof that he was their son, but he was nearby, and his age is a good match. See his own page for more information on him. Franklin M. Grant was born ca 1827/28 in Wilson Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and with them in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and still home with his widowed mother in 1850 and 1860. Like many other people with his same given name, he was listed with different variations. In 1850 he was "Franklin Grant", but in 1860, he was "Francis M. Grant". If he ever married, it was after 1860. Wyatt Grant was born ca 1832/33 in Wilson Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9 born ca 1830/35), and still home with his widowed mother in 1850. He was not found in Wilson Co, TN in 1860. I'm told (by Jean Westbrook Gibbons) that Wyatt moved to Texas. Albert J. Grant was born ca 1834/35 in Wilson Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9 born ca 1830/35), and still home with his widowed mother in 1850. Albert was not found in Wilson Co, TN in 1860 or elsewhere in the state. Perhaps he moved to Texas with his brother Wyatt. Nancy J. Grant was born ca 1836/37 in Wilson Co, TN. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and still home with her widowed mother in 1850 and 1860 in Wilson Co, TN. If she ever married, it was after 1860. Mary E. Grant was born ca 1839/40 in Wilson Co, TN. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and still home with her widowed mother in 1850 and 1860 in Wilson Co, TN. If she ever married, it was after 1860. Rachel S. Grant was born ca 1843/44 in Wilson Co, TN. She was home with her widowed mother in 1850 and 1860 in Wilson Co, TN.
