William S. Grant of Wilson Co, TN

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to William S. Grant as far as I know.

William S. Grant was born ca 1825/26 in TN, presumably in Wilson County.

I don't know who William's parents are for sure, but I strongly suspect he is a child of Jubal Grant and Nancy Hightower. Two factors lead me to this conclusion. First, William was listed on the 1850 census just nine houses from his probable mother Nancy (who was widowed by then). Second, Jubal and Nancy did have a son William's age (per the 1830 and 1840 census) who is otherwise unaccounted for. Of course, neither of these factors are conclusive proof that William is their son.

William S. Grant was presumably at home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.

In 1830, William would have been approximately 4 years old. That would put him in the "Under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30). There was only one Grant household in 1830 Wilson Co, TN, and that was Jubal Grant, and he did have two sons in that age group, one of them currently unknown, so that could easily be William.

In 1840, William would have been approximately 14 years old. That would put him in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30). There were only two Grant households in 1840 Wilson Co, TN, one was William Grant (c1794) and the other was Jubal Grant. William did not have any apparent sons the age of William S. Grant, and anyway, he already had a proven son named William Grant who was a different person. Jubal Grant did have two sons in that age group, one of them currently unknown, so that could easily be William S. Grant.

William S. Grant was listed on the 1850 census in the household of Jonathan York (c1800) and Mary A. York (c1816). Mary was born in Pennsylvania, or else I might suspect her as a possible sister of William, but it doesn't look that way. He was probably just a hired laborer, or possibly related to the York family in some way. As mentioned earlier, William S. Grant was just nine houses from Nancy Grant, widow of Jubal Grant. They are very likely his parents.

I didn't find William in Wilson Co, TN in 1860, but he might have been there still. I have only checked the index. There was a William Grant age 35 in Shelby Co, TN in 1860 with a family. This could be him, though that is all the way to the western end of Tennessee.

Children

I don't know yet if William ever married and had children.
