Introduction
I was attempting to work on my Grant
book the other day (which I've been doing off and on for years), and I
got side tracked on some "famous" Grants. After working on them for
awhile, I decided it wasn't interesting enough for inclusion in my book,
but I didn't want to drop the subject entirely.
The most famous Grant of course is
Hiram Ulysses "U. S." Grant (1822-1885), General and President. I
discussed his family briefly in the last newsletter. However, their are
some other Grants of some fame, mostly entertainers, such as actors Cary
Grant, Hugh Grant, and pop / Christian singer Amy Grant. Of the actors,
both Cary and Hugh Grant are from Great Britain, and therefore not
likely closely related to any of us. In the case of Cary, we aren't even
potentially distantly related to him, for "Cary Grant" isn't his real
name. (Hugh actually is a "Grant"). I looked at the Internet Movie
Database (IMDB) and found several hundred Grant actors, most of whom I'd
never heard of, but there were a few familiar names: Richard E. Grant
(not his real name), Lee Grant (not her real name), and Native American
actor Rodney A. Grant (Omaha tribe from Nebraska). Of these, only Rodney
is a potential relative, but I don't know his ancestry.
Pop / Christian singer Amy Grant (wife
of Country Singer Vince Gill) is a Grant by birth, and was born in
Georgia, and has lived in Tennessee for many years. Her Georgia roots
mean she has a strong chance of having ancestry in North Carolina, South
Carolina or Virginia. I don't know her lineage, but would be proud to
claim her as a cousin.
My Lineage. Some of you might
not know how I fit into the Grant family, so here is a brief outline of
my line (from Western NC).
William Grant (c1725-1795) and Mary --- of VA; Rutherford Co, NC.
Andrew Grant (1755/65-1825) and Martha Mackey (1755/60-1850) of Rutherford and Macon Co, NC.
Thomas B. Grant (1804-1845) and Mary Miller of Macon and Swain Co, NC.
John Patton Grant (1845-1917) and Darthula Jane Evans of Swain Co, NC and Union Co, GA.
Hattie Thermudas Grant (1879-1953) and Carroll Alonso Patterson (not married)
Marvin Roosevelt Grant (1902-1992) and Lilly Belle Gilbert
(1902-1983)
Garland Samuel Grant (1922-2000) and Luella George
(1924-1990) * My Grandparents.
If you want to submit an article, then
feel free to e-mail me about it. My only guidelines are those given
above (Grants from TN, NC or VA, preferably pre-1880), and that the article not be too long. I also don't want to be
publishing genealogical registry reports, for they are difficult to
properly format in an e-mail environment, making them hard to follow.
Tennessee Grant Families
There are many Grant families in
Tennessee, and most of them had their progenitors in Virginia and North
Carolina, with a few coming in from South Carolina and other states.
There are even a couple of Grant families in Tennessee who originated in
New England. Like the Grants in other states, it is very reasonable to
assume that all of these Tennessee Grants are not related to one
another. There are certainly connections between some of the groups, but
for the most part, those connections are unproven.
Refer to the map below showing
Tennessee Grant family
distribution as of the 1850 census. The counties marked in yellow had at
least one Grant living there in 1850. Those marked in light blue had
Grant families there in earlier times, but none left there as of 1850. The
base map was created using
AniMap Plus County Boundary Historical Atlas, a great little program showing all county changes in the US
over the years.

From the map above you can see that
Grants were well spread out over the entire state by 1850.
Here is an outline of the major groups
(not including the isolated Grants):
Eastern Tennessee Grant
Families:
- Blount and Monroe County
families: From the William Grant (c1725) and Mary line of western
North Carolina.
- Campbell County family:
Brothers from Connecticut: John Grant (1750/60), and Lt. Col. James
Grant (c1753)
- Jefferson County family:
Isaac Grant (1764) and Elizabeth, formerly of Maryland, then to Burke
County, NC then to Tennessee.
- Roane County family: From
Washington County, Virginia.
Central Tennessee Grant
Families:
- Franklin and Lincoln County family:
James Grant (bef 1755), and sons James (1765/70), Asa (1774) and
Thomas (1777) of Guilford and Rockingham Co, NC.
Western Tennessee Grant
Families:
- Henderson and Madison County
family: John Grant (1770/75) and Tabitha Martin and children, formerly
of Wayne Co, NC (unproven).
- Montgomery County family: Two
lines, probably related: Descendants of James Grant (c1733) and
Ann Diskin of Caswell Co, NC; Descendants of Halifax County, Virginia
Grants.
Many of the seemingly isolated Grant
families may have ties into one of the above larger family groups.
Of course, Tennessee was a major migration destination for those in
North Carolina and Virginia, so the various Grant families found there
have origins in many different places.
This has been a very general overview
of the major Grant families in Tennessee. I'll discuss some of these
families in more detail in later newsletters. For more information

Family
of the month:
John Grant and Margaret Sale family
of Wilkes and Iredell Co, NC. John Grant was born ca 1756
(per 1835 Pensioner Census) or ca 1760 (per 1840 Pensioner Census). I
have seen others listing his birth place as Somersetshire, England, but
I have no idea what the source for that is, nor if it is accurate. I
don't know who his parents were, but it is possible that he is a
brother to David Grant who was also in Wilkes County with him (in 1790).
Both John and David were revolutionary War soldiers in the North
Carolina Continental Line. David may have also lived in Wake County,
North Carolina, and later in Carter Co, TN (but I'm not sure it is the
same David in each of those places).
John Grant may be related to the
William Grant family of Yadkin River, for he lived near them, prior to
their removal to Kentucky in the late 1700's. John appeared in Surry
County, North Carolina records in the 1780's, and at the same time
appeared in Wilkes County records (which borders Surry). John married
Margaret "Peggy" Sale in Wilkes in 1784. She was a child of William
and Ann (---) Sale, as proven by her father's Will.
John and Margaret only had three
children (as proven by his Will), which was an uncommonly small number
of children for that day and age. However, it is entirely possible that
they had other children who died young.
They continued to live in Wilkes County
until the 1810-20 timeframe, when they moved to neighboring Iredell
County and remained there until their deaths. Margaret died sometime
between 1835 and 1840, and John died ca 1844.
John and Margaret's three children are
proven by John's 1835 Will.
- Elizabeth Grant (c1785-after
1850). Elizabeth married Moses Mitchell (c1777) in 1801 in Wilkes Co,
NC. An interesting coincidence is that another Moses Mitchell married
Mary Grant ca 1771 in the Yadkin River area. That Mary was a daughter
of William Grant and Elizabeth Boone (Daniel's sister). Even though
they were all in the same region, I have no information showing the
two Moses' were related to each other, nor the two Grant families.
Moses and Elizabeth lived in Iredell County, and were still there as
of the 1850 census.
- Anna Grant (c1784/87-after
1835). Anna married John Howard (1780/84) in 1806 in Wilkes County.
They lived there, then moved to Iredell County and were there until at
least 1830. Anna was named in her father's 1835 Will, but I have no
data on her after that. She may have died around then, or else the
family moved away.
- Robert Grant (1787/90-after
1840). Robert married Jane F. Gibbs ca 1814. I have seen no proof of
her maiden name. They moved to neighboring Burke County before 1820,
settling in the region that later became Alexander County. For some
unknown reason, Robert and Jane appear to have separated in the late
1820's, for from then on they appeared in different census households,
with the children apparently divided up between them. Robert died in
the 1840-1850 timeframe, probably in Iredell County. Jane lived for
many years afterwards, in Alexander County, still alive as of 1880.
For the most part, John's descendants
remained in the same general area, with his Grant grandsons living in
Iredell, Surry, Alexander and Yadkin County through the 1860's and
later.
