Welcome to this issue of "Grant Genealogy", a newsletter devoted to Grant Genealogy in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia (and other states to a lesser extent).

Please visit my Grant web pages at: http://www.martygrant.com/gen/grant.htm for documented web pages for numerous Grant families in NC, TN and VA.

To change your subscription information (change your e-mail address, or unsubscribe) refer to the instructions at the bottom of this newsletter.

This newsletter is devoted to Grants in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, and it seems to me that most of the Grants in these states are from Scotland originally, but some could be English or Irish. Perhaps many of the diverse lines we are studying have common ancestry back in Scotland. (Perhaps a Grant Surname DNA Study would help identify related lines).

Introduction

Hi, I hope everyone is doing well. I apologize for taking so long to get this newsletter out. This it the first one since January. Well you get what you pay for! <g>

I've been busy recovering from my 3rd (and last) tailbone surgery, and I think this one has done the job, and that I'll be back to normal before long. I've been dealing with this problem since 1999, so it will be nice to be able to sit long enough to go visit my parents, go to church, movies, dinner, etc. I also plan to go to libraries, archives and so forth to continue my research.

I have taken some time in the last month or two to work on my Grant book (concerning William Grant (c1720-1795) of Rutherford Co, NC). I have now reached a stopping point and could probably publish it "as is," but I wouldn't be satisfied with it. I really need to make a couple of research trips before I can feel good about it. I need to go the Virginia Archives and try to find more about his origins in Virginia (probably Orange County), and I'd also like to make one more trip to Rutherford County, NC and other counties in the North Carolina mountains. In any event, the book is currently 878 pages, including index. There is only a little more I'd like to add to it. I'll keep you posted.

I've also been reading. I've finished biographies on George Washington, and John Adams and am currently reading one about Thomas Jefferson. Can you see a trend here? I also am reading (off and on) a book about the History of Colonial South Carolina.

Enough about me, on with the newsletter. I am adding some interesting Virginia records and some immigration records that might be of use. I'm also glad to publish some submitted material sent to me by cousin Jean Taylor. I'm always glad to receive something like this to publish. It takes some of the pressure off of me. Enjoy the newsletter, and please let me know if there are any topics you'd like me to cover in a future edition.

Grants in Virginia in 1782-1785

As many of you probably already know, the 1790 census was the first one taken for the United States. Unfortunately the census returns were lost for the State of Virginia. It was once widely reported that they were destroyed during the War of 1812 when the British burned parts of Washington, D.C., but more recent research suggests they were just misplaced or destroyed over the years by neglect or carelessness. In any event, a substitute was printed up many years ago by the Government Printing Office which used extant tax lists from 1782, 1783, 1784 and 1785. These were published under the title: "First Census of the United States 1790. Records of the State Enumerations: 1782 to 1785. Virginia", originally published in 1908, but reprinted several times since.

I noticed that only a few Grants were listed on this "census", when the 1787 State Census of Virginia shows quite a few more. I wonder why so many were missed in 1782-1785? It could be that the compiler didn't have access to all the available records, or in fact, some of the early tax lists for some counties were lost. Another book was published later based on the missing 1782 listings. This list below does not include those.

The 1782 and 1783 lists included a column for Whites and one for Blacks. The 1784 and 1785 lists included 3 columns, one for white souls, one for dwellings, and one for "other buildings." Any notes after the enumerations are from me and not part of the original record.

Descendants of Wiley Grant of NC, TN and TX

Jean Taylor submitted the following regarding her ancestor Wiley Grant (1834-1890), son of Alexander Grant and Susan Sumner of Buncombe Co, NC and Polk Co, TN. Anyone with information, comments, etc., please contact Jean at: Jean Taylor, 546 Granberry, Houston, TX, 77007. The formatting below is slightly off (the original was fine), for these kind of reports don't translate well into html for web pages, but it is good enough to get the point across.

Descendants of Wiley Grant

Son of Alexander and Susan Grant of NC and TN

Generation No. 1

1.  WILEY4 GRANT  (ALEXANDER3, THOMAS2, WILLIAM1) was born Bet. April 27, 1834 - 1835 in Buncombe Co., NC, and died August 30, 1890 in Upshur Co., TX.  He married (1) SUSANNA  (Susan) BRUCE in (probably) TN.  She was born 1836-1844, and died in (probably) Smith Co., TX.  He married (2) FANNIE BALLZIGER.  (Some family members say Wiley’s second wife was a Shamburger.)

Although Wiley Grant's tombstone in Chilton Cemetery in Big Sandy, Upshur Co., TX notes he was born April 27, 1843 in Ducktown, TN, it is apparent from census records and information obtained from other Grant researchers that he was actually born ca 1834 – 1835 in Buncombe County, NC.  I am assuming the month and day from his tombstone are correct.  J. A. Taylor

Wiley Grant is found in the following U. S. censuses:

1840 Buncombe Co., NC age 0-4
1850 Gilmer Co., GA  age 15
1860 Walker Co., GA  age 26
1870 Walker Co., GA  age 35
1880 Smith Co., TX  age 46

Wiley is shown with his parents, Alexander and Susan Grant, until the 1860 census when he is found in Walker Co., GA with his wife, Susanna (Susan) Bruce (Source of her maiden name is from her daughter's, Susan Frances Grant Kennedy, death certificate.  Daughter’s husband, J. M. Kennedy, supplied the information.)  J.A. Taylor

*****************************************************************

It seems likely that Wiley's father, Alexander Grant, and family moved from Gilmer Co., GA to Polk Co., TN in the early 1850's since daughter Roxanna is believed to have been born there.  Wiley probably moved with them.  He would have been only about 17 years old at the time.  His two oldest children are shown born in TN so it would seem that he married there and moved to Walker County, GA between 1858 and 1860 when he is found  in the 1860 Walker Co., GA census.

If we assume that Wiley's daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Grant Love, moved to Texas at the same time as Wiley and Susan, it would place the time frame of that move between 1878 and 1880 if the information on the Love children is correct that they were born in GA.  Wiley’s wife, Susan, is living at the time of the 1880 Smith Co., TX census, but we know Wiley was remarried before his death in 1890. It is not known when Susan Grant died or where she is buried.  An extensive search of Smith Co., TX cemeteries has been made with no success.  It can only be assumed that her grave is unmarked.

With the destruction of the 1890 census, it has not yet been ascertained when (or if) Wiley moved to Upshur County, TX before his death in August 1890.  It is likely that he did move there or somewhere close by since he is buried in Chilton Cemetery in Big Sandy, Upshur County, TX.  Or it may be that his second wife was from the Big Sandy area and that's why he was buried where he was.

Wiley Grant served as a Private CSA.  His occupation afterwards was listed as Farmer.

Wiley Grant's military information from "Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia" 1861-1865, Vol. 1, page 107.  “Wiley Grant, Private, July 8, 1861.  Transferred to 2nd Co. I, 1st Confederate Regt. Inf. November 8, 1862.  Appears last on roll for August 31, 1863.”        J.A. Taylor

EXPERT ADVICE: QUESTIONS TO ASK IN THE GRAVEYARD

When you locate your ancestor's grave, copy the marker's inscription. Here are some other items you should note:

* What type of cemetery is it? What is the location of the cemetery? Record directions in case you or another researcher wants to return.

* What is the location of the grave from the entrance? You'll want to be able to find it again or tell others how to get there. If there is a cemetery map, mark the location on a copy of the map and keep it in your files.

* How are the graves oriented? On an east-west axis? Haphazardly? In neat rows?

* Was your ancestor buried in a particular section of the cemetery? For example, a section reserved for a religious group, for veterans, for members of a fraternal organization or with other disaster victims. Who's buried around your ancestor? Later research may reveal that they were relatives.

* What kinds of decoration and foliage appear on or around your ancestor's grave? Is the grave scraped or mounded? What kind of artwork was carved on the stone? These symbols have different meanings.

* Is there a false crypt or grave house? What is the shape of the marker, and what is it made of? Marble? Granite? Slate? Limestone? If the stone is granite and the death date is 1789, then this isn't the original stone. Granite wasn't used until the 1880s.

* What kind of inscription was carved on the stone? Only a name and dates? Does the epitaph or poetry speak of the dead, or is it a farewell message?
