My Henderson FamilyWestern North Carolina, Eastern TN and North Georgia Introduction - A History of my research on this family My Henderson Family - Data on my Henderson ancestors IntroductionBack in the 1980's, I asked my grandfather (Garland S. Grant) about his ancestors. He told me that one of his grandmothers or great grandmothers was a "Henderson", but he wasn't sure which one. It didn't take me too long to find out it was his mother's mother was a Henderson. Granddaddy told me that he knew several of his Henderson cousins growing up, and told me about a few of them, but he had no data on his Henderson ancestors. While visiting with Granddaddy's brothers and sisters in Georgia one year (1989, I think), I asked his sister Frances and sister Bobbie about the Hendersons. They both knew a little bit. They told me I should contact cousins Homer and Minnie Barnes of Blairsville, GA as they were the ones who knew all about the family. I wrote Homer and Minnie, and we started a correspondence. They shared Henderson data with me, and other family. It turns out that I was related to both Homer and Minnie. My grandparents remembered them. I took Granddaddy and Grandmother to visit Homer and Minnie in 1990, and we had a good visit. Minnie gave me data on the Henderson and Stewart families. She said that some of it came from Ralph Johnson, another Henderson cousin. A lot of the data was from her own personal knowledge. Her mother Bett Henderson Ledford was a sister of my Great Great grandmother Ibiline Henderson Gilbert. Homer and Minnie's data, along with Ralph Johnsons gave me a great start on the Henderson family. I added to their data from census records and marriage records, mostly in Union Co, GA. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go back any further on this family than what was originally shared with me by Minnie and Ralph. My Henderson ancestorsOur earliest Henderson ancestor was James Henderson, born ca 1790/1800 in North Carolina somewhere. He may have been from Rutherford County, or somewhere else in Western NC. His wife was named Jane, maiden name unknown. She was born ca 1804 in NC also. They married sometime before 1826 either in NC or in Tennessee. All of their known children were born in TN (1826 through 1834). I don't know what county, but I suspect McMinn or some other Eastern TN county. James and Jane and their children left eastern TN for Union Co, GA in the late 1830's where they remained. James died in Union Co, GA in the 1840's, and Jane sometime after 1860. Their son Thomas M. Henderson was born 1834 in Tennessee, and died 1909 in Union Co, GA. He is my Great Great Great Grandfather. He married Margaret Emaline Stewart in 1857 in Union Co, GA. Thomas and Margaret are the parents of Ibiline Henderson (1863-1934) who married Noah Washington Gilbert in 1881 in Union Co, GA. They are my Great Great Grandparents.
